to be annoyed about this situation with neighbour and her dog?

I’m lying awake because I don’t know what to do about this situation.

On Sunday our neighbour came to see us visibly upset. Her mum had been taken into hospital and she had been told to get there asap. Her mum lives in Scotland and we are in the South of England so she was panicking about getting there on time and also about who would look after her dog. We helped her book a flight as she was in a state shaking and in no state to think properly. She asked if we could have her dog for a few days. Reluctantly we agreed but said we were leaving to go on holiday on Friday evening so she would need to make other arrangements by Friday morning for him. We went and collected the dog and he has been with us since. We have our own dogs and they are all getting on well.

Our neighbour text me on Monday to say her mum had died. We had a brief text conversation and obviously I said how sorry I was to hear about her mum.

I text her on Wednesday morning to say that I know she has a lot to deal with but we really need to know what she’s doing about her dog as we are due to go away. I didn’t hear anything so I text her again yesterday to ask what she wanted us to do with the dog and got a text from another of her relatives from her phone saying our neighbour is very upset and isn’t in the right place to sort this out. I replied to say I understood but that when we agreed to have the dog, it was on the condition that she made other arrangements for the dog by Friday morning as we are due to go on holiday. I didn’t get a reply. I tried to call last night but it went to voicemail. I had already called our nearest boarding kennels who do have space so I told her on the voicemail that I could drop him at kennels but she needs to give them her payment details. I still haven’t had a reply from my neighbour.

What do we do? I’ve asked other neighbours and they won’t have him. My parents are having our dogs while we are away but are not willing to take the neighbours dog as well.

A friend has suggested I drop him at our local vets which is the vet my neighbour uses but I don’t think they would be ok with that. Another friend said if it comes to it to call the rspca, explain the situation and say he’s basically been abandoned.

I’m so stressed. I know my neighbour has lost her mum but we are not missing our holiday.

Grief aside, she has to take responsibility for her dog. Text her again that you are going away today. If she doesn’t reply within a certain time limit then text a final time to say you are reporting the dog as abandoned due to no communication. What an awful situation she has put you in. Enjoy your holiday too.

You haven't done anything wrong but neither has the poor bloody dog. Your neighbour is an absolute selfish twat. No matter whether her mum's died, she has responsibilities. And her friend is just as bad. I would just keep calling and texting and not stop until you get a reply that she's coming back. Don't fussy foot round her just because her mum has died.

Hard to argue with this

Poor Dog 😢

Why is that funny. This is exactly the sort of thing they deal with. Stray dogs.

Because sometimes people say ddog here to mean 'dear dog', similar to dh, dc, etc. So the typo's kind of funny in this context. Like the warden is a secret Mumsnetter.

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 07/08/2026 09:04

I’d be leaving a message saying that unless she provides payment details for the kennels (you’re still actually doing her a favour by arranging this for her!) then the RSPCA will be called at noon to take the abandoned dog.

SpikyCoconut · 07/08/2026 09:04

will be looked after.

Put down. Could you live with that?

Can you find a smaall rescue centre/fosterer via fb/next door etc?

I wouldn't be leaving it at a vet. If they indeed agree to take him. He could well end up being PTS. Awful neighbour but i couldn't live with that.

diddl · 07/08/2026 09:05

I wouldn't be surprised if she ignores you in the hope that you take her dog with yours!

I don't suppose your parents know anyone who would look after it if it came to that?

I know that's involving a lot of people though.

Geeze what's happened to kindness? I am sure OP can recoup the cost of kennels of vet charges from the owner

What happened to kindness??? I don’t know how you have the audacity!

Yes, I could sleep at night.

The neighbour would be told where the dog was, down to her then to stop that happening.

placemats · 07/08/2026 09:10

The dog is now abandoned. Despite every effort on your behalf @CantGetBackToSleep to contact the owner. My advice is to contact the dog warden as well as the vets. Have a look on the council website about dog wardens. My council website has very useful information.

Lalaprovence · 07/08/2026 09:10

Poor dog. Awful.

Your neighbour is being ridiculous. Of course it’s sad about her mum but I’m guessing her mother was pretty elderly - however shocked and bereaved she is, you can’t just abandon all your adult responsibilities in the face of this.

I’d be very annoyed - but if it’s a low maintenance dog, I would be asking your parents to take him for now. The difference between 2 and 3 isn’t massive and I’d rather this than it going to the RSPCA which will be so stressful for it.

CantGetBackToSleep · 07/08/2026 08:34

No, they are looking forward to having our dogs but don’t want to look after another one.

This is so out of order of your neighbour. My father died suddenly in an accident, and I didn’t drop my responsibilities.
She’s a piss taker unfortunately
take the dog to a rescue or the vet. I worked for an animal charity before, they will take it

SweatySpider321 · 07/08/2026 09:11

She’s taking the piss. When one of my parents died then l couldn’t / didn’t ignore all of my responsibilities. Life goes on.

BerryTwister · 07/08/2026 09:12

Sorry if I’ve missed it, but I assume you’ve tried calling the neighbour’s relative who called you before?

PrettyLittleRose · 07/08/2026 09:13

I'm actually wondering (as another poster was) if the neighbour has actually lost her mother, or if she's on some hen do overseas or something?

But then I'm a cynical old bat. 😎

Lellamir · 07/08/2026 09:14

The RSPCA will kill the dog.
Surely, 3 dogs is no worse than 2 dogs?

Viviennemary · 07/08/2026 09:14

This is a poor show on the part of your neighbour. If she is too upset to speak then she should have got one of her relatives to sort it out. I think kennels is the best option. If you don't want to pay for kennels I think it's worth contacting her vet for advice. So irresponsible and selfish of her.

Toddlingabout2 · 07/08/2026 09:14

Are there no other neighbours in the street that might be able to help temporarily?

It sounds like OP has asked her parents and they have said no. It wouldn’t be right to keep asking them.

I think the vets is the best thing OP. Have a great holiday.

Geeze what’s happened to being a responsible dog owner and not taking the absolute piss out of your neighbours?

WearyAuldWumman · 07/08/2026 09:16

TeaFizzy · 07/08/2026 08:53

Her parents don’t want to take the neighbour’s dog, though, which is perfectly reasonable of them.

i’d be reporting it as a stray at this point if the vet can’t / won’t help.

The owner is of course being totally unreasonable. Losing a parent doesn’t mean you can just ignore all your other responsibilities and her dog should be a priority for her. How is she going to manage all the other death admin if she can’t even sort out paying for the kennel that OP has managed to find for her?

All of this.

The neighbour simply cannot abdicate responsibility like this.

I've been through the death of each of my parents and my husband. I can assure you that i was completely in pieces when I dealt with my husband's death - I was on my own. (When my parents died, I at least had my husband's moral support.)

Nevertheless, you do what you have to do when you have no option. The neighbour is using the OP as a convenience and has no care or respect for her.

This is borne out by the text that's come from the relative.

Inmyuggs · 07/08/2026 09:16

Ring her whats the point in texting
If she wont answer drop the dog to a kennel...
Damn crazy.

Mooselander · 07/08/2026 09:17

Honestly just dump the dog wherever you can (dogs trust, vets, rspca, rescue), text her and move on with your life.

It isn’t your problem and you shouldn’t have said yes in the first place.

CantGetBackToSleep · 07/08/2026 06:50

I’m torn between thinking she’s grieving and not thinking straight, and thinking she’s an irresponsible twat who has now caused us a big problem.

No, Op, trust me I've had a terrible tragedy in my life over a course of a week and the first thing DH did when we were in the hospital for a week was ask a relative to check our two dogs into the dog daycare business near us. Trust me I didn't take advantage of anyone especially after such kindness shown by you. This isn't on you. Grieving or not. You manage your responsibilities and in my case my twin babies had died in the NICU. I never behaved like this

Yeah, odd that she wasn’t too upset to explain the whole situation to her family member in obviously quite detailed terms and then ask them to text her neighbour for her.

Amandatelly · 07/08/2026 09:19

Her situation is awful, and I can see why she might feel unable to cope with other things. However, most of us have experience of grief, even sudden & unexpected death and you do unfortunately still need to ensure your responsibilities are taken care of.

Most people see their pets as additional family members and the thought of just leaving that animal with someone and not even acknowledging that other arrangements need to be made is absolutely awful.

I don't know what the best suggestion is OP, but please don't feel guilty about it. As long as you make a choice that is safe for the dog, it really is down to the neighbour that ends up where it is.
