Didn’t get an interview

tyrabanks123 · 07/08/2026 00:22

If you don’t get an interview - external or internal, do you still ask why you didn’t get an interview?

what if the job is re advertised but previous applicants told not to reapply?

You can ask , but mostly they don't respond.

lulubalu · 07/08/2026 22:47

I'd be inclined to leave it OP: you said you used to work in that team yet that didn't sway their decision in your favour.

The hiring manager said you didn't have the skills required and you argued back that you did, maybe you genuinely believe that but you're still not 'entitled' to an interview.

DancingNotDrowning · 07/08/2026 21:47

If your communication style on this post is indicative of how you approach work I can understand why they don’t think you’re a good fit,

and not being a good fit is a perfectly reasonable reason not to be any to hire someone

So you are saying it’s ok to refuse interview as the hiring manager didn’t like me

Yes. They don’t like you so you’re not getting an interview, nevermind the job.
Move on.

plsbekinddelicate · 07/08/2026 19:30

OP - having done my fair share of hiring I cannot see how you have been either discriminated against or treated unfairly. In my organisation, we do not give feedback to candidates unless we actually interview them regardless of whether they are internal or external. If I knew a candidate personally in an internal role and they asked, I would tell them truthfully that I can’t answer as I don’t know but if they would like to share their completed application form with me I’d be happy to review it.
My usual approach is to print out the essential and desirable criteria, grab a highlighter, and check it off. I don’t care what they tell me, I mark based on what they show me. E.g. essential criteria to communicate with a wide range of people. If you write “I can communicate with a wide range of people” I don’t highlight it. If you write, “Having worked in my local coffee shop for eighteen months I’ve developed skills communicating with people.
If someone was applying and had been a previous applicant our system has the function to stop the application submission. I do that every time. If you’ve tried before and not put the effort and time into the first application I’m not wasting time on a second.

No one is being obtuse.

you can’t however say because you are disabled it’s being used against you

Edited

If someone didn’t give you an interview because of a protected characteristic then that wouldn’t be ok.

If this team already know that your skill set, including your communication skills don't fit the role, then they are fine to not give you an interview.

So you are saying it’s ok to refuse interview as the hiring manager didn’t like me

Yes. This is completely lawful. The hiring manager has complete and purposeful discretion as to who is interviewed and who is offered.

your application didn’t demonstrate the required skills. It’s possible other actions or communications meant the HM also deems you would not be a good fit for the team.

all lawful.

As opposed to legal - no crime is being committed.

You said that they said you didn’t have the right skills; those skills can include soft skills, such as communication style.

If they don’t think you are the right fit for whatever reason then they can refuse an interview. A fair few people have told you this quite clearly now.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 07/08/2026 18:40

Well did you do that? The poster was trying to get more information in order to help you, so why be obtuse about it?

You think you have the skills etc but clearly others don’t think you do. They don’t have to interview you and they don’t have to give you a job.

Backpain2026 · 07/08/2026 18:38

The question to ask, both to your existing manager and the hiring manager, is: "Is the issue that the application form didn't clear explain my skills ( in which case you need to work on improving how you fill in forms). Or. Is it the case that there isn't evidence yet that i actually have the skills ( in which case then ask what you need to do to develop those skills).

You be clear that you really want to join that team, and what do you now need to do to be successful at a future recruitment.

Bushmillsbabe · 07/08/2026 18:23

When I an reviewing applications, I have to write a line or 2 why not offered an interview, linked to person spec. HR can pass this on if a person calls to enquire, but with up to 100 applicants for 1 job, we can't give direct feedback

You ask if worth reapplying? Have you done any extra relevant training since your initial application, which would make you nore suitable? If no,I wouldn't bother

Snoutywoofs · 07/08/2026 18:19

It’s becoming obvious why they do not want you in their team.

menopausequeen · 07/08/2026 17:57

You can ask but I doubt anyone will tell you if you are an external candidate. If internal they usually make more effort to explain.

Minasama · 07/08/2026 17:49

tyrabanks123 · 07/08/2026 10:37

Is that legal

Yes. It would only be illegal if they had given you grounds to believe they didn’t want you because of a protected characteristic, eg if they appeared not to
want you because you are black/from a different country/disabled/a woman etc.

Suitability for the role & team/cultural fit are the most usual reasons for people not getting roles - or internally if someone is known as a poor performer or difficult to work with. Most applicants have the fundamental skills, or they wouldn’t apply.
However it may well be they have their eye on someone who they want for the role.

YouHaveAnArse · 07/08/2026 17:44

Are you saying you feel discriminated against for being white and/or straight?

pastadish · 07/08/2026 17:44

Sometimes even though we work as hard as we can and try our best we just aren’t a good fit for a certain place and it sounds like they don’t think you’re a good fit. It’s hard to accept but you have no choice but to accept it. There will be other jobs you will be better suited to

KiwiFall · 07/08/2026 17:41

tyrabanks123 · 07/08/2026 09:55

I’ve spoken to the hiring manager. She knows me and saw my application, said I don’t have the skills, I said I do

Although you feel you have those skills they feel you do not. You can reapply but they won’t consider your application.

shhblackbag · 07/08/2026 17:28

Besides, if you communicate with them the way you do on this thread, I understand them. It would be like pulling teeth.

shhblackbag · 07/08/2026 17:25

Are they right that you exaggerated your CV? Because if so that should be all the feedback you need.

Owly11 · 07/08/2026 17:19

I recognise this op. In my experience there's no point giving advice because they will fail to take any of it on board. It's apparent to everyone except op why they didn't get an interview and that's quite a sad situation to be in. But there's no telling those who don't want to hear.

tyrabanks123 · 07/08/2026 17:16
