To think that Cambridge University’s reputation has been shot to pieces by the revelations about ex-professor Jason Arday?

If its true he lied about having recovered from a benign brain tumour, he's even more despicable. A convenient way to excuse citation errors in a viva examination.

StepawayfromtheLindors · Yesterday 09:12

It’s not racist to call out bad or unethical or illegal behaviour. Everyone regardless of skin colour or background should follow the same rules and laws, and be held to account if they don’t.

And no you have to be joking if you think this will rock Cambridge’s reputation. It’s cast iron.

FullOfLemons · Yesterday 09:11

I doubt its reputation in disciplines such as natural sciences, law or English has been impacted.

It probably makes no difference to those who work in or are interested in Jason Arday’s field.

DeftGoldHedgehog · Yesterday 09:11

Not sure if a university failing to follow sound employment procedures is national news, but I guess it makes a change.

Lots to think about in this case. It’s very sad personally and institutionally.

Several worrying things about it are true at the same time as much as some people would like it to be a simple good vs evil tale. Arday is obviously a fantasist, but it’s also obviously the case that racism is at play.

Otherwise how could he be such a unicorn in the first place? He’s sounding like he’s been amplified in his over claiming by institutions for years. they have wanted to support these fantasies and have not spend the money and taken the time to do due diligence to check on things and that’s not OK either.

This kind of thing surely becomes inevitable when you make vast cuts to university budgets. Back office processes will get skipped. People change jobs a lot more as contracts are shortened and take home pay gets worse. Nobody wants to see the HR bill go up accordingly so things get skipped.

The risks of that worrying institutional behaviour way overshadows one person trying his luck as a chancer, yet the reporting of it is very skewed towards blaming Arday personally. Cambridge is just the most recent in a line of employers that haven’t checked claims. How many other less grandiose Ardays are there still there? This case rightly or wrongly is going to cause more burden on academics and institutions and back office processes because of this huge level of scrutiny the media have brought.

I also hate this media narrative of ‘everyone exaggerates their CV’ no I bloody don’t. I think a lot of women in fact women do the opposite. Underplay female achievement. So this will have a chilling effect on female promotion, which will be really depressing.

And I feel really sad for all the academics of colour who have struggled to get where they are now based on their merit and talents in a predominantly white academy, which will have been much much harder for them to do. They will feel singled out for skepticism of their appointments due to this case which is horrible.

I don’t know how you can fact check or challenge anyone’s claims of autism or if we should even try to do that ever… but I worry that the media presentation of autism as a big part of the picture when an individual has done something bad; will make other people feel autistic people are not genuine or autistic people are prone to lying about their achievements, or that people who say they’re autistic should not be believed, and they’re trying to make an excuse.

Not saying these are comparable acts at all but lately some prominent murderers or attackers have said they’re autistic when defending their case which I found really upsetting. The autistic people I know couldn’t countenance lying and in fact often get in trouble for being way too honest and direct, and obviously wouldn’t hurt a fly.

So this Arday case is confusing and upsetting because of what it uncovers. And I hope the one individual at the centre is OK because this is a lot. As well as all the other people hurt by this. As PP have said, there is a whole system of male over-promotion. Tale as old as time!

We don’t get this level of correction and interest normally so what is that saying about our employers and our society and its culture and value it places on individual or group achievement and/or barriers and struggle to achieve for individuals and groups?

'Obviously the case that racism is in play'.

How so?

AChunkOfPurestGreenMilady · Yesterday 09:09

If he was a middle-aged white bloke from a provincial university who was found to have skimpt on his citations and juiced up his cv absolutely no-one in the wider world would give a monkey's, and there certainly wouldn't be a big fuss in the media when he resigned.
That said, Trinity should have looked harder at his credentials - this is an absolute open goal for the diversity critics.

Rothburypixie · Yesterday 09:09

I thought the plagiarism claims were found to be not true? Off to google haven’t seen any updates!

Totally agree with all of this. Well, apart from

“This kind of thing surely becomes inevitable when you make vast cuts to university budgets”

I firmly believe even in the heady days of overseas students and excess money no university would’ve been effective enough to pick this up. The processes were no better when they had money

x2boys · Yesterday 09:06

I always found the narrative of him being severly autistc and not speaking untill 11 somewhat sceptical .

Let’s not forget setting the police on a Times journalist for a 4 month investigation (Sir Mark Rowley has belatedly admitted the Met should never have been involved) and setting a defamation law firm on a fellow academic.

Yet NOT calling the police on animal heads being left for him or a masked man with a knife. Or indeed calling the university security staff.

He is exactly what the 'institutions' these days deserve.

LuckyHazelFox · Yesterday 08:58

The 'bless him' was clearly tongue in cheek.

Bless you - I will scrap reference to that and the rest of my content is still valid.

LuckyHazelFox · Yesterday 06:42

Bless him? He's a fraudster, who lied his way through his career and then used racism to silence people. Well done for falling for it.

I think I'd want my money back if I was one of the students who'd been 'taught' by him.

Yes, I imagine you would feel tainted.

Backedoffhackedoff · Yesterday 08:50

lol. Cambridge’s reputation is completely untouched. This will be forgotten about in 6 months.

NotAnotherScarf · Yesterday 07:52

Basically he's Jay from the inbetweeners. I bet he's got a video at home of him jumping 12 buses on a motorbike on Blue Peter.

Sorry 'signed a non disclosure agreement not to name the people' he raised money with. Ran 300 miles in 6 days. Couldn't read until he was 18. Used mimicry to overcome his issues...If Jay had said any of those it wouldn't have been too much of a stretch.

And Cambridge never checked any of that? And two tier policing reared its ugly head again.

Baileyss · Yesterday 07:49

I had not heard of him before but cannot believe anyone believed his claims. He looks like a fantasist to me.

Lengokengo · Yesterday 07:42

I read somewhere that the true measure of equality was when underperforming women/ POC were promoted above their ability.

i have of course seen many white males promoted above their level of competence. I guess equality means that we don’t just see it happening for them.

The lack of scrutiny into the stories by the employers and the bizarre rationale given (had to sign an NDA for the organisation he was fundraising for!?) just shows how will fully blind they were.

Just employ people who have the proven qualifications/credentials/ experience and perform your due diligence!

LifeBeginsToday · Yesterday 07:32

This is really sad. I am an autistic academic and looked up to him to what can be achieved. To see that it was all lies has shaken me.

Quine0nline · Yesterday 07:32

Obtaining a pecuniary advantage by fraud and deceit -a criminal offence.

Were his certificates, awards and qualifications forged or false documents - criminal offence.

Making false claims of racism - that's wrong too.

How many successful, highly educated (legitimate) black academics under scrutiny due the the mans criminal acts?

The "admiral" who dressed in a uniform to lay a wreath was prosecuted for far less of an offence.

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · Yesterday 07:29

The whole story is so infuriating. He has clearly lied about so many things, constantly and in many cases so obviously that it's clear hes a fantasist. Yet this was overlooked by several universities. As a result not only has he put all Black academics under scrutiny of whether they have had less scrutiny than others to get to where they are but yet again used ' autism' as a reason for not understanding what plagiarism and lying is, so implying people with autism can't really be trusted to be academics either.
