AIBU to want weekly rubbish collections during this hot weather?

I used to tip solid nappy waste down the loo, definitely reduced the bin smells from nappies.

I think when food waste was introduced in my area it was just tagged onto garden waste so rather than little food waste bins that I see in other areas we have these 240l wheelie bins that you you can also bung garden waste in (if you pay for it). It feels a bit ridiculous putting it out maybe a 1/16 full after four weeks it’s just peelings, skins, bones and eggshells. Definitely stinky though.

Recycling is four weekly as well so I have 4 * 240l bins just for recycling then the general waste bins is 140l.

I live rurally so doesn’t bother me but I feel quite sorry for people whose small front yard is taken up by a plethora of enormous bins.

Food waste and recycling (and most stuff is recyclable here) weekly. General waste 3 weekly but that rarely smells and I sometimes only put it out every 6 weeks. If you have children in nappies I can see it might be a problem here but that’s about it.

No, Many places do more often than that. And we used to. Weekly collections, picking up whatever is left, would also stop most fly-tipping.
I wouldn't go quite so far as the poster who says she'll vote anyone from Green to Reform if they bring back weekly collections, but I get why a lot of people say that (still won't vote either, though!)

I hate the fortnightly collection. I walked around today and the streets stank. You always get people saying ‘oh but I struggle to fill even a quarter of a black bin, even once a month would be fine’. Meanwhile those of us with cats, dogs and babies have bins full of shit.

Our food waste is collected 4 weekly. Invariably there is maggots at this time of year. It’s alright for me as I live in the middle of nowhere so leave the bin 100m down the drive. The council complains that people still put food scraps in general waste which is emptied fortnightly. I think if you want people to seperate food waste you generally need to have more frequent collections.

I don’t think general waste bin/ recycling bin smells really, I remember having three in nappies though and that bin reeked constantly in summer .

It’s definitely the food. Before we had a separate food waste collection, it all went into the general bin, when summer came the maggots came. It was awful.

We’re fortunate, our food waste is collected weekly. General waste and Recycling alternate weeks, but as there’s no food in either of these there’s no smell. Cardboard collected fortnightly too.

My bin was disgusting today I have cats but their waste is double bagged we have no food waste collection im guessing thats where the smell came from this week i threw out food from my old freezer before I got rid of it I dont find a wheelie bin liner makes much difference it just provides an extra layer for sweating to happen

Exactly. No money available. In Devon, for example, 80% of the budget is spent on adult social care and children’s services.

our black bags are collected every 3 weeks and limited to 3 per household but tbh as we can recycle so much, we tend to only have 1 non smelly bag to put out each time.

we have food waste collected weekly, as well as separate paper, cardboard, glass, soft plastics and cans/platics. We rinse everything out and nothing smells at all.

I’m often surprised when we’re in other parts of the uk how poor the recycling provision is.

But there simply aren't enough enough funds available for most Councils to do that now. So if you don't want to pay more Council tax, where do you want rhe Council to take money from? Schools? Looked After Children?Libraries? Adult Social Care?

Ours is fine as food waste is collected weekly. Rubbish is every three weeks and recycling weekly. I wash all the recycling so it doesn’t smell and we generally don’t have a full rubbish bin.

Yes, all food waste goes in the food bin and that's emptied weekly. But we can keep ours outside. I guess they do smell if you have to keep them inside?

Food waste weekly. Other recycling fortnightly and land till fortnightly. I wash all packaging so it doesn't smell. Very occasionally we have a smelly bin but not regularly

We are so fortunate in that all our waste is collected weekly. I can't imagine the kitchen waste being left longer than that. I had maggots a few weeks ago - I keep the food waste in the garage.

Nappies do not go in the food waste. They smell even when bagged.

My food waste is collected weekly, too, and the others fortnightly.

My rubbish and recycling doesn't smell, but I am very careful to make sure that tins etc are thoroughly rinsed out so that there's no food residue to get stinky.

Op the reason the council cut collections is down to costs, they don’t have the money to provide weekly collections, if you aren’t wanting to pay more in order to have weekly collections, then you are stuck with a longer gap between them being collected. Councils pay for people in nursing homes and towards foster carers, it’s not just rubbish collections their budget pays for.

Just put a glug of disinfectant and a kettle full of hot water in the dirty bin after it is emptied. Swill it round and empty into the gutter. Fresh bin at much less cost than a weekly collection.

We now have weekly food bins which help but if you double bag there should be no issue with smells

my bin is cleaned every 6 weeks or so but to be honest as it’s in bags it doesn’t get that dirty now

I do wish Local Authorities would standardise their bin colours and collection containers. We live in a popular coastal town, and have a blue wheely bin for recycling and a green one for general waste, collected on alternate weeks.

But most holiday makers staying here seem to assume that the green one must be for recycling (and the holiday let owners aren't telling them differently) with the result that we en up with loads of blue bins containing general waste that the binmen then refuse to take away, and they just stay there overflowing for weeks on end

I've just been dealing with my late mums estate down south, and they have a black bin for general waste, only collected every three weeks, and then a green box for paper and card, a green box for bottles, and a sack for plastic containers and tins collected fortnightly. Plus a smal lfood caddy for food waste collected weekly.
