Am I cooking shit or being stingy??

Currently on holiday with my sister, her husband, their 8 year old DS Amanda 14 year old daughter

i had originally booked it for just me, DH and Ds (8) but I invited them last minute at no cost to them as sister was stressed about money and not being able to take the kids out.

They have complained non stop about the food. First evening we got a takeaway but first morning they asked what was for breakfast so I said I had porridge or Greek yogurt and fruit and nuts. BIL burst out laughing saying “so it’s either prison food or bird food?”. Sister said “don’t you have anything in for the kids?” So I said I’d got the porridge for the kids and I have honey, jam or Nutella to stir into it. Teen rolled her eyes and sister said “I’ll go to shop later and get something in”. Was it really so bad???

that evening I made spaghetti bolognese. 75g dry pasta each and a 600g pack of mince shared between us all with mushrooms, bacon and various veggies. When I served it BIL pulled a face and said where’s the rest of it? They all started laughing - teen dramatically pulled a bit up from her plate and let it fall back down slowly whilst pulling a face. Sister said “what’s up with you?” And teen said “it tastes funny”. They all laughed.

I was getting pissed off at this point and told them they’re welcome to buy and cook their own food if they’d prefer. BIL said “oh here we go, here’s the catch” so I said no I’m more than happy to carry on buying and cooking but not to be insulted and laughed at. DH then decided to tell everyone I’m always on weird diets which isn’t true, I have ibs so I do try and restrict certain things but he made it out to be about weight loss which it isn’t. DS said he likes the food and DN said “yeah but you’re used to eating crap”

So yesterday I refused to cook. They’d bought their own cereals but when it came to evening meal I told them I was cooking a curry for us 3 so they might want to pop to shop and get something in which they did and came back with dohnuts and loads of sweet food. Fair enough.

tonight sister had told me she can’t afford to go back to shop as they hadn’t budgeted for repeated shopping trips. I’ve told her I’m cooking paella and they’re welcome to join us without insults. She said she’d talk to them.

as of 10 minutes ago teen was still asking what was for dinner so she clearly daren’t tell her.

Am I really cooking shit or being stingy?? I’m starting to wonder if it’s me

It is rude to monopolize a thread and continually assert that your opinion is fact. Porridge is not what you'd serve, or eat presumably. I happily eat it and would be grateful to be served it, especially on a holiday that SOMEONE ELSE PAID FOR.

So yes you are being rude and you should give it a rest now. We get it, you don't think it's proper. Stop going on now, you are being rude

I will respond to whomever I choose. You are not forced to quote me. Hth.

Its not rude to say that porridge isnt what you'd serve i'm afraid, its an opinion.

I eat well, i eat a good range of food and have a good diet - i love junk food like most normal people, but i have it on occasion

Like.. on holiday

I would be surprised if I was served a lazy dish like pasta when someone is "hosting". That's kids food and family food on busy work days.

Bit odd to serve pasta when you host guests? I'd make more of an effort but each to their own.

Someone's never heard of Italy.

To be fair, having just made a spag bol, 750g, 6 portions, (onions, garlic, grated carrot, oegano, red wine, puree, 2 tins mutti), (three tonight) I didn't weigh the pasta and never have. Served woth a mixed salad: leaves, cu, tom, pepper, red oni9n, grated carrot, avo. No bread. I have no idea how much spag I.cooked weight wise.

Huh?

That said, you wouldnt be rude to the host when you are a guest

OP can cook what she likes for her family on her holiday. Her sibling's family were free to stay home instead of tagging along (for free). There is 0 excuses for their behaviour.

CrapAbble · 06/08/2026 21:01

How fucking rude are they?

Goditsmemargaret · 06/08/2026 20:59

A takeaway, spaghetti Bolognese, paella and breakfast food available sounds extremely generous to me.

They are inexcusably rude as are many of the posters here.

IStillHearTheWaves · 06/08/2026 20:29

Reading this thread, it's clear why there's an obesity crisis in this country.

Exactly. 75g of pasta is the recommended measure. The people who complain must be eating too much.

Drknittingfrog · 06/08/2026 20:55

By the sound of it they are being rude and ungrateful. Hope tonight dinner went better. Sending you heaps of patience!

Change2banon · 06/08/2026 20:54

Your sister and family are being VERY rude .. as are some posters here! I’d be more than happy to join you OP 😂 If it were me, I’d be thanking you politely even if I didn’t like the food or thought there wasn’t enough. I’d be helping out with washing up etc

And to reiterate for others .. THESE ARE NOT GUESTS!!

AmethystDeceiver · 06/08/2026 20:47

Stop being so rude. Porridge is lovely, any food cooked for me is met with a thank you, not looking around for more

OP has earned the money to pay for ALL OF IT. Her sister and family are incredibly rude not to bring any provisions at all, let alone commenting on what's been provided for them!

Also - if you only eat salty fatty foods granola and berries seem like deprivation, but it is real food and you should try it sometime

Your relatives are just nasty. And very rude. YANBU.

NeedyLimeMember · 06/08/2026 20:48

YANBU, they are incredibly rude. Are they the kind of people to completely over indulge and live off crap just because they're on holiday?

redbullsurvivor · 06/08/2026 20:47
  1. perfectly normal and healthy portions. We literally have a weight issue and problems with portion sizes as a country. So it’s very expected to have such responses.
  2. even if you did agree to host, you don’t mock the host! You keep your mouth shut and say thank you.

you literally say in your first post "As a fellow junk food lover" @gayestgal

Okay 🙄

Well I eat excellent food and I also bake sweet treats for myself and guests

Life is for living at least a little

gayestgal · 06/08/2026 20:41

AmethystDeceiver · 06/08/2026 20:40

That's so rude! It's also a 'you' issue. Plenty of us eat yogurt and porridge for breakfast quite happily. Do you only eat fry ups and fatty food?

PensionPuzzle · 06/08/2026 20:40

gayestgal · 06/08/2026 14:14

So

Your taste in food sounds awful! So sorry. As a fellow junk food lover, I wouldnt want that and I wouldnt want a paella unless its done without any cuts or attempts to make it healthy

I cant stand mushrooms, and when i make a bolognese, its fatty, tasty and there is loads of pasta and garlic bread

For breakfast I would offer a fry up and some access to carbs. I would never offer granola

Sorry, being honest

BUT

There seems to be a backstory here

Have they lent you money before? Have they taken you away? They seem to dislike you 😡

Also, theyre being rude. They were invited on a free holiday, they should offer to fill up the fridge with stuff they like

I'm intrigued by what you'd do to a paella to make it 'healthy'? I can only think of one thing I'd maybe reduce when I make mine if I'd been given that brief.

OP you are right, they're clearly CF. Your breakfast options wouldn't be what I'd choose but the obvious solution to that is for them to say on the first morning, oh, didn't realise that's what you have for breakfast, I'll nip to the shop and get some cereal/bread/whatever. And offer to pick anything else up that's needed.

AmethystDeceiver · 06/08/2026 20:40

gayestgal · 06/08/2026 15:48

No sorry, only offering granola to your guests on their holidays isnt appropriate.

You offer a proper range of food

That said, as ive said - you wouldnt be rude to the host.

Scarlettpixie · 06/08/2026 20:38

If they think the portions are small, the polite thing would be to top up with snacks.

Just out of curiosity though how much garlic bread did you do to feed 7? 3 baguettes would bulk out the pasta but 1 or 2, not so much. When I do a baguette between 3 it’s a minimum.

theneighboureatmysalad · 06/08/2026 20:17

I wouldn't worry too much about some odd comments from an odd poster 😂

your sister and her family are rude and entitled brats. Shame on you for offering them a free holiday apparently. They're lucky you are offering anything more than toast for the duration of their visit.

(I bet some poster would still manage to start an argument about the proper toasting process, so maybe not 😂)

I trust it will be served with the crusts off, cut into soldiers and served with dippy boiled eggs?
brown eggs, obvs.
