Am I cooking shit or being stingy??

Currently on holiday with my sister, her husband, their 8 year old DS Amanda 14 year old daughter

i had originally booked it for just me, DH and Ds (8) but I invited them last minute at no cost to them as sister was stressed about money and not being able to take the kids out.

They have complained non stop about the food. First evening we got a takeaway but first morning they asked what was for breakfast so I said I had porridge or Greek yogurt and fruit and nuts. BIL burst out laughing saying “so it’s either prison food or bird food?”. Sister said “don’t you have anything in for the kids?” So I said I’d got the porridge for the kids and I have honey, jam or Nutella to stir into it. Teen rolled her eyes and sister said “I’ll go to shop later and get something in”. Was it really so bad???

that evening I made spaghetti bolognese. 75g dry pasta each and a 600g pack of mince shared between us all with mushrooms, bacon and various veggies. When I served it BIL pulled a face and said where’s the rest of it? They all started laughing - teen dramatically pulled a bit up from her plate and let it fall back down slowly whilst pulling a face. Sister said “what’s up with you?” And teen said “it tastes funny”. They all laughed.

I was getting pissed off at this point and told them they’re welcome to buy and cook their own food if they’d prefer. BIL said “oh here we go, here’s the catch” so I said no I’m more than happy to carry on buying and cooking but not to be insulted and laughed at. DH then decided to tell everyone I’m always on weird diets which isn’t true, I have ibs so I do try and restrict certain things but he made it out to be about weight loss which it isn’t. DS said he likes the food and DN said “yeah but you’re used to eating crap”

So yesterday I refused to cook. They’d bought their own cereals but when it came to evening meal I told them I was cooking a curry for us 3 so they might want to pop to shop and get something in which they did and came back with dohnuts and loads of sweet food. Fair enough.

tonight sister had told me she can’t afford to go back to shop as they hadn’t budgeted for repeated shopping trips. I’ve told her I’m cooking paella and they’re welcome to join us without insults. She said she’d talk to them.

as of 10 minutes ago teen was still asking what was for dinner so she clearly daren’t tell her.

Whilst they sound rude and ungrateful, the portion size is tiny. My family of 4 would have a 500g pack of pasta between us and I’d probably use a pack of mince per 4 and a garlic bread per 2 people! We are all slim and active most days I eat around 2000 calories and my husband and 12 yo twins probably 3000! Where are the calories coming from!

Yes I agree. They’re clearly ill mannered arseholes but equally you expect to indulge a bit on holiday surely? Counting portion sizes and calories sounds a bit zealous and might be a clue as to why DH got in a sly dig.

ALL parties - including the men - should be chipping in and cooking. Poor role modelling for the kids to see yet another woman do all the cooking on a family holiday. And no, helping your son with ‘baking’ a cake doesn’t count.

Wingingit247 · Yesterday 20:59

I honestly can’t imagine being invited on a free holiday and being so incredibly rude, entitled and whiny! I’d be telling her to take her rude husband and kids to pack up and go home so that you can enjoy YOUR holiday! How anyone can say there’s anything wrong with what you’re offering beggars belief. The cheeky fuckery of it!!

Oh OP
I have the RAGE on your behalf! So rude.
What do they eat at home?!

Gettingbysomehow · Yesterday 20:27

If that was my sister they would all be on the next flight home. Has your Bil got no shame? He cant provide for his family and he dares to comment on the food you cooked on their free holiday.

Sending Much Love To You
I can't believe they're being so ungrateful, rude & ignorant, especially when you're being so compassionate, kind, caring & immensely generous -
I feel so upset for you to be experiencing such disrespect
They don't deserve your good natured generosity, patience & hospitality
You so deserve so much more on all levels

Loopylambs · Yesterday 20:00

If someone invited me and my family on holiday I would expect to contribute to the food bill, what a cheek . I would be grateful for any meals , not critical . OP , I would buy my son and myself a beautiful steak or some salmon if not a vegetarian and cook just for the two of you . Your DH and other family can go and buy some doughnuts again. Your DH sounds like a dick too, he can do the rest of the shopping , meal planning and cooking and you can refuse to eat it. . Do not cook for any of them for the rest of the holiday .

AgentJohnson · Yesterday 19:50

Your sister and her family are extremely rude but I suspect their behaviour isn’t such a shock to you. Your H joining in says a lot about your family dynamic. However, you are cooking for other people, did you not gauge what their food preferences were? I hate porridge and I hate mushrooms a would have struggled with your offerings. In addition, DD who is a skinny mini eats twice as much as I do and I’m twenty kilo’s heavier.

In your shoes I would stop cooking for them.

DaysIllRememberAllMyLife · Yesterday 19:35

Who do the 8 year old DS and 14 year old daughter belong to as its unclear?

BeUmberMember · Yesterday 19:31

So sorry for you, like me you obviously choose healthy options for your family and cook from scratch, which of course saves money and calories and suits your own medical dietary requirements. Your son and husband obviously enjoy and appreciate your cooking and it's good to hear how much you enjoy doing it. It was very generous of you and your husband to include your sister's family in your holiday plans and obviously their hurtful comments and criticisms will be very upsetting for you. My only conclusion is that their family eat a completely different kind of diet and amounts of food to yours which is absolutely their choice and decision to do, but in no way should they be judging your choices, especially since you are both preparing it and funding it all. Young teens and children are usually very picky when faced with different food choices, so I wouldn't take their comments personally. However, I suggest an option would be to sit down alone with your sister (who has already said they cannot afford to make food shopping trips during this "free holiday") and ask her how together you can rectify the situation, so everyone is happy. Family relationships and dynamics are so important but sadly some people will take you for granted and not show appreciation or consideration of your feelings, and sometimes it is what it is and you just have to accept it for the greater good. Wishing you all the best.

chezzabee80 · Yesterday 19:28

I think your food choices and portions are fine considering you've offered to share, but I'd take it as a big lesson learned never to offer to holiday with them again as they sound rude and entitled, I'd hate that will be much more relaxing for you next time without them there and all their cheeky comments putting your kind efforts down. Hope you can figure out a way to get through the remaining time there.

Carandache18 · Yesterday 19:27

I don't know who has been cast in the worst role: Lady Bountiful or The Poor Relations. The teenager was probably never going to be able to grin and bear it, and the men are clearly embarrassed and resentful.
The only thing that might help future relations is a long, long break between the families after this. Time to build up an income and recover some self respect.

ILovePie01 · Yesterday 19:26

Even if they’d done their food shop.. could they not have brought their loaf of bread and cereals from home?! If they didn’t have even £50 spare I think they should have just declined. Fair enough can’t contribute £1k+ but not even a loaf of bread?! £50 would have covered breakfasts, toasties for lunch and a meal or two for all.

LilyBunch25 · Yesterday 19:18

Delatron · 06/08/2026 14:59

She’s not hosting!! She is on holiday.

Give it up 🤣 hosting is obviously on this posters mind....

Beachbeach · Yesterday 19:16

They are completely horrible. Even from the comment about yogurt or porridge I thought that was awful and they could fuck off home. Then it got worse!!!

LilyBunch25 · Yesterday 19:14

Good grief. What an ungrateful lot, and sarcastically passive aggressive into the bargain. As for your DH he was a massive help with the "weird diets" comment. Thanks a bunch I'd be saying. Most people invited on a free holiday would be falling over themselves to contribute something and would certainly not complain about food being not only thrown in but cooked for them! You're a better woman than me not to have chucked their dinner over them by now.

Introvert80 · Yesterday 19:13

I'm gobsmacked at their rudeness.

WiddlinDiddlin · Yesterday 19:13

Nah, they're used to stuffing themselves, they could have brought some food with them, I am sure that they have food in the house that wasn't frozen.. they chose not to do that and are being rude as fuck.

If they want larger portions than you normally serve they can contribute to the food budget, after all they will have all this weeks food sitting at home waiting for them when they return so they wouldn't be breaking their monthly budget!

I would point out you've offered to share your holiday accomodation and feed them, you have not offered to treat them to a private chef'd luxury AI holiday where they can choose from 100 different options at each meal and stuff themselves silly.

Your mince would do 3 people. You have to understand that when hosting, you need to cater for giant portions or it appears “stingy” and “mean”. I’ve met plenty of women who think lunch is one “Ryvita” and that’s how they stay slim. They invite people around whose eyes are on stilts at how little food is prepared. It’s like WTF, are we in a prison camp?! Fine, but understand that growing teenagers literally stuff their faces. I’ve even met wafer thin men & women who pack enough food down for an entire rugby team, as they have very high metabolism, & are always down the gym.

The crunch point in your post though, if that they are not contributing to YOUR holiday. When I read that, they can FO, and all bets are off. Tell them if they don’t like it, they can FO. Next holiday, get cash up front or no invite.

As Elton John said to Prince Harry recently who went around his gaff asking for £10m to pay the Daily Mail in his failed lawsuit. Elton said “Am I an ATM?!! - FO!!” Door slam.

MaddestGranny · Yesterday 19:12

They're rude. Your sister married an arse and they brought up two waste-of-space arsehole DC. Learn from this holiday and don't it again. Meanwhile, hopefully. they've noticed where the door is and, before they spoil the rest of your holiday, they'll use it to sod of home and leave you in peace.

ImagineImagine · Yesterday 19:12

What on earth made them think that when you invited them on your trip, that you were also going to provide every morsel for them to eat too? Bizarre! Tell your sister, she has to feed her own family, or go home.

LisaD76 · Yesterday 19:06

They haven’t the money to go to the shop repeatedly? If they hadn’t purchased loads of junk they would have more money, also they would have had to buy food if they were home instead of enjoying a holiday you have gifted them. I think you are more than generous, if they don’t like it they can sod off!

Surgz · Yesterday 19:01

Rude little shits..the lot of them! You are being generous and patient and the food sounds fine ( just probably too healthy for their junk beige preferences)

Katypp · Yesterday 18:59

Clearly the sister and her family (if this thread is even true) are massively rude and ungrateful.
But i am enjoying the posters falling over themselves to declare the OP's rather pedestrian menu as delicious and perfect and at the same time assuming you either think 75g of pasta is a massive portion OR you only eat beige processed food. Bonus points for the snobby comments (without knowing ANYTHING about the other family) around oven chips, chicken nuggets and - horror of horrors - WHITE bread.
I think the OP is secretly enjoying showing off her healthy cooking and basking in her children who eat porridge and yoghurt enthusiasticly. I know I would have done.
We are away atm in the UK and are having muesli, milk and fruit for breakfast as it's easy and means we can be away for the day quickly. We are also cooking every night.
I hate yoghurt and am not too keen on porridge when the weather is hot, but i don't think that makes me an UPF-guzzling monster - does it??

Pessismistic · Yesterday 18:54

Maybe suggest sister and bil cook for your family it sounds like they have misunderstood free holiday to be waited on hand and foot on a holiday that you have paid for. Did you know they couldn’t contribute to food costs. If they use frozen food a lot maybe there use to cheap bland food. Either way rude and cf.
