Am I cooking shit or being stingy??

Currently on holiday with my sister, her husband, their 8 year old DS Amanda 14 year old daughter

i had originally booked it for just me, DH and Ds (8) but I invited them last minute at no cost to them as sister was stressed about money and not being able to take the kids out.

They have complained non stop about the food. First evening we got a takeaway but first morning they asked what was for breakfast so I said I had porridge or Greek yogurt and fruit and nuts. BIL burst out laughing saying “so it’s either prison food or bird food?”. Sister said “don’t you have anything in for the kids?” So I said I’d got the porridge for the kids and I have honey, jam or Nutella to stir into it. Teen rolled her eyes and sister said “I’ll go to shop later and get something in”. Was it really so bad???

that evening I made spaghetti bolognese. 75g dry pasta each and a 600g pack of mince shared between us all with mushrooms, bacon and various veggies. When I served it BIL pulled a face and said where’s the rest of it? They all started laughing - teen dramatically pulled a bit up from her plate and let it fall back down slowly whilst pulling a face. Sister said “what’s up with you?” And teen said “it tastes funny”. They all laughed.

I was getting pissed off at this point and told them they’re welcome to buy and cook their own food if they’d prefer. BIL said “oh here we go, here’s the catch” so I said no I’m more than happy to carry on buying and cooking but not to be insulted and laughed at. DH then decided to tell everyone I’m always on weird diets which isn’t true, I have ibs so I do try and restrict certain things but he made it out to be about weight loss which it isn’t. DS said he likes the food and DN said “yeah but you’re used to eating crap”

So yesterday I refused to cook. They’d bought their own cereals but when it came to evening meal I told them I was cooking a curry for us 3 so they might want to pop to shop and get something in which they did and came back with dohnuts and loads of sweet food. Fair enough.

tonight sister had told me she can’t afford to go back to shop as they hadn’t budgeted for repeated shopping trips. I’ve told her I’m cooking paella and they’re welcome to join us without insults. She said she’d talk to them.

as of 10 minutes ago teen was still asking what was for dinner so she clearly daren’t tell her.

Am I really cooking shit or being stingy?? I’m starting to wonder if it’s me

They are being incredibly rude! Surely they don't expect to just sit back while your pay for and cook all their meals for the whole holiday?

If you ever do this again (and I don't blame you if you don't) then you really need to have a conversation in advance about what you are going to eat, if you are going to eat out, or get takeaway, or who is going to cook dinner on which nights. Talk about what you like to eat for breakfast/snacky meals and who is going to buy it. If anyone wants something special/fancy they they get it themselves!

I think porridge/yoghurt etc is perfect for breakfast and is what we would normally eat. But we might also do an occasional big cooked breakfast on holiday - and plan that in advance. Or people will bring/request the cereals their kids eat.

And fwiw, last time I did spag bol I cooked 500g mince and it did five good adult portions, so your 600g for seven with two little ones sounds fine to me. But I do 100g pasta per adult.

DeathMetalMum · 06/08/2026 14:13

They are being extremely rude and ungrateful.

My own DC (teens) wouldn't be keen on the breakfast options but would eat it without being rude. Maybe suggesting to pick something else up for the next day. Depending on how much garlic bread I'd want 3 baguettes minimum. Your portions sound ok but only just for five adults and one DC. My teens eat the same or more than I do.

theneighboureatmysalad · 06/08/2026 14:12

They are unbelievably rude. Who do they think they are?

I think your portions are a bit small, and the breakfast would't feel like "holiday breakfast" for many kids but it's beyond rude to comment, and frankly dickish behaviour to make jokes.

Any normal person would have offered to contribute as a thank you, or at least, bring the desert, bring some nibbles/ afternoon snacks or breakfast..

DontSingSusan · 06/08/2026 14:11

You're not being stingy! Those meals sound perfectly fine to me. But their reactions would piss me right off.

Justanopinionnothingmore · 06/08/2026 14:09

Wow what an ungrateful bratty family!

Never invite them again.

MrsMillyFluff · 06/08/2026 14:09

Cheeky bastards. Make it the last time you do them a favour and invite them on your holiday. You're being very kind by footing the bill for everything.

Favouritefruits · 06/08/2026 14:09

You sound like you’re cooking normal family meals, nothing weird about spaghetti Bol/ curry/paella I think it says more about them! The only thing I would critique is the 75g of pasta is a bit low for energetic teens and fully grown men, but that’s pushing to find a fault!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 06/08/2026 14:08

They’re rude to complain, but I think on holiday people often want to treat themselves a bit with food in which case your portions/ options do seem a bit stingy and boring. I do eat yoghurt with nuts and berries as my usual breakfast but on holiday would usually get something like pastries to go alongside as well to make it feel a bit more interesting. To me porridge is a winter food too so I would find it an odd option at this time of year. I wouldn’t say anything though if I was a guest!

Your bolognaise sounds fine but I would have probably done a bit more pasta rather than limiting to 75g, I know this is the standard portion recommended but again, on holiday I think people do often want to feel able to eat a bit more if they want. If I was hosting I would usually do enough that people can have seconds if they want to.

However, that said obviously they are very rude to complain. The polite thing to do when someone is hosting and the food isn’t to your liking or is leaving you hungry is to purchase some different food options and/ or offer to make the next meal. Due to their rudeness you are reasonable not to want to provide them any more food.

Gardenisablooming · 06/08/2026 14:08

So they came unprepared financially to eat?

jeaux90 · 06/08/2026 14:08

Ok look I get you don’t like eating out because of your dietary constraints but just go. They can then sort themselves out. They sound CFs and incredibly rude. Don’t let them walk over you, yes portions sound a bit low but who the fuck actually whines on a free holiday. Entitled assholes

Mauvish1 · 06/08/2026 14:08

I don't think the food sounds stingy! That's more pasta than I normally cook for myself, and I use max 125g of mince per adult, padded out further with carrots, peppers, mushrooms. I'm an active woman, a bit older but healthy, and neither under- nor overweight.

I'd tell them where to go.

timtamsarebetterthanpenguins · 06/08/2026 14:07

They’ve been incredibly rude.

Personally I would offer things like bread, cereal, eggs and bacon for breakfast and would cook bigger portions for dinner but I’d never dream of telling the host that.

JessicaGoodman · 06/08/2026 14:05

I would say the food does sound a bit stingy, and I might privately think that if I was them but I would keep it to myself and certainly wouldn’t say anything.

But the amount or type of food isn’t the point. They are incredibly rude. Not even just thoughtless or tactless but lacking in basic manners?!

Tell them to cook for/feed themselves, which presumably they would have been doing at home anyway, so they must have the money to do so.

Cora0 · 06/08/2026 14:04

You say your sister was stressed about money. Does her husband know this is why they were invited last minute?

I think I would say in front of all four of them something to the effect of “I invited you on this holiday because you said you couldn’t afford to take your children away but if the four of you are so unhappy about it you can all leave.” I kind of wonder if the husband and children are none the wiser and think that they were just dragged along because your sister wanted to join.

SweatySpider321 · 06/08/2026 14:03

Are they always so rude to people? I would be downing tools at this point. As someone eise said they would have to buy food anyway if they were at home. They sound tight and lazy

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 06/08/2026 14:03

I wouldn’t cook for them at all and tell them if they won’t to continue to be so fucking rude and ungrateful they can go home early. Honestly how are you not raging at their bad manners!

Babyboomtastic · 06/08/2026 14:02

The pasta and meat doesn't sound enough, and the food wouldn't be to my taste personally, but they have been spectacularly rude.

We are a family of (mostly) tricky people to cater for, but that means we would take the responsibility to feed our children rather then accept your offer of food and then be rude.

SorrellNightwind · 06/08/2026 14:01

Charlotte120221 · 06/08/2026 13:50

Are you in the UK?

Am puzzled that they can't afford repeated shopping trips - surely they'd have to feed themselves if they were at home??

Exactly

AbzMoz · 06/08/2026 14:00

Presumably if they were at home they’d be going to a normal supermarket shop? ‘there’s the catch’? If you feel you’re being scammed with my generous free holiday and cooking, then go home!

They all sound awful and entitled. I hope the bastards don’t grind you down. Also your husband needs to confirm which team he’s on.

Pinkflamingo10 · 06/08/2026 13:59

They’re so rude. And ungrateful.
however would serve way more than 75g pasta per person though and I use 750g mince for 5 people, so I think 500g mince for 7 people is a stretch especially when cooking for guests, there certainly wouldn’t be any seconds for anyone or enough for hungry children!

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 06/08/2026 13:58

They're very rude.

I'd stop bothering to cook for them.

If they're so fussy and broke, tell them you've got the food and ingredients in and leave them to cook stuff themselves.

Cheeky fuckers.

Nousernameideaaga · 06/08/2026 13:58

Just cook for you and your son 👍

Chaarlene · 06/08/2026 13:58

Fattypuffs vs Thinifers. The holiday was never going to work.

Deadringer · 06/08/2026 13:57

They are so ungrateful, bil in particular sounds like an arsehole. I would not be feeding them, you were very kind to invite them and it sounds like they are spoiling your holiday. Let them fend for themselves, if they can afford shopping at home they can afford it on holiday.

Justaquestionplease · 06/08/2026 13:56

They are being rude but 75g pasta each is a bit stingy imo
