Am I cooking shit or being stingy??

Hydranga · 06/08/2026 13:44

Currently on holiday with my sister, her husband, their 8 year old DS Amanda 14 year old daughter

i had originally booked it for just me, DH and Ds (8) but I invited them last minute at no cost to them as sister was stressed about money and not being able to take the kids out.

They have complained non stop about the food. First evening we got a takeaway but first morning they asked what was for breakfast so I said I had porridge or Greek yogurt and fruit and nuts. BIL burst out laughing saying “so it’s either prison food or bird food?”. Sister said “don’t you have anything in for the kids?” So I said I’d got the porridge for the kids and I have honey, jam or Nutella to stir into it. Teen rolled her eyes and sister said “I’ll go to shop later and get something in”. Was it really so bad???

that evening I made spaghetti bolognese. 75g dry pasta each and a 600g pack of mince shared between us all with mushrooms, bacon and various veggies. When I served it BIL pulled a face and said where’s the rest of it? They all started laughing - teen dramatically pulled a bit up from her plate and let it fall back down slowly whilst pulling a face. Sister said “what’s up with you?” And teen said “it tastes funny”. They all laughed.

I was getting pissed off at this point and told them they’re welcome to buy and cook their own food if they’d prefer. BIL said “oh here we go, here’s the catch” so I said no I’m more than happy to carry on buying and cooking but not to be insulted and laughed at. DH then decided to tell everyone I’m always on weird diets which isn’t true, I have ibs so I do try and restrict certain things but he made it out to be about weight loss which it isn’t. DS said he likes the food and DN said “yeah but you’re used to eating crap”

So yesterday I refused to cook. They’d bought their own cereals but when it came to evening meal I told them I was cooking a curry for us 3 so they might want to pop to shop and get something in which they did and came back with dohnuts and loads of sweet food. Fair enough.

tonight sister had told me she can’t afford to go back to shop as they hadn’t budgeted for repeated shopping trips. I’ve told her I’m cooking paella and they’re welcome to join us without insults. She said she’d talk to them.

as of 10 minutes ago teen was still asking what was for dinner so she clearly daren’t tell her.

Am I really cooking shit or being stingy?? I’m starting to wonder if it’s me

Do you know what they normally eat? It sounds as if they may subsist on junk food. Stick to your guns, if they moan again down tools.

ImogenBrocklehurst · Today 16:44

If they’re not happy with “prison food or bird food” maybe suggest that they have a little adventure to the supermarket to buy something their entitled teenagers might consider acceptable. And suggest they can get something to make for dinner for everyone.

BySharpPanda · Today 15:23

I'm afraid I'd tell them to leave, completely out of order, don't take that treatment from anyone, sister or not, you were very good to cook for them at all

I cook 500g mince with loads of veggies and most of a pack of spaghetti for 3 of us and have a leftover for my lunch so it definitely doesn’t sound like enough. They aren’t contributing and obviously being very rude but if you’d invited them and said meals included then they do need enough to eat I guess. Maybe they’d not have come or brought lots from home if they knew they had to sort their own meals bit they couldn’t word things a whole lot nicer

Come on, really?

I get organic mince which comes as a 400g pack. I add a whole onion, courgette, pepper and mushrooms and this feeds a family of four (two week girls) with enough leftovers for 2-3 portions. With garlic bread and pasta that’s absolutely plenty.

regardless this isn’t the point. If you’re a big eater and that’s not enough, then get yourself what you want on top!

Her "guests"? They are all away on holiday together, that OP has paid for, and these lazy stingy grubbers are not only expecting to be fed and catered for, but have the cheek to bitch about what's on offer that they've neither paid for or prepared.

@gayestgal has admitted to being an overweight junk food eater. I don’t think you should bother about her opinion

(Probably @Hydranga ‘s sister or BiL)

Mummyof2andthatsenough · Today 11:20

The cheeky fuckers. A free holiday, free food and they are still complaining? And your husband should have spoke up for you!

SpaceRaccoon · Today 10:46

If they have a very different food preferance to the OP, that's fine - but then say to her that they prefer to sort themselves out.

What they're doing instead is sitting there like a nest of baby birds cheeping at her, and then having the absolute audacity to bitch about the offering she's spent time and money preparing.

Rude, graceless and stingy. It's OPs holiday too, she's not running a hotel.

I honestly can’t imagine being invited on a free holiday and being so incredibly rude, entitled and whiny! I’d be telling her to take her rude husband and kids to pack up and go home so that you can enjoy YOUR holiday! How anyone can say there’s anything wrong with what you’re offering beggars belief. The cheeky fuckery of it!!

This, in spades.

If anyone I had invited and was not only paying for but also cooking for was even a quarter as rude as this they would be shown the door in two seconds.

Your food sounds lovely, ignore the posters who think that the only food groups are fat, preservatives, sugar and burnt bits. Yuck.

Chocolateistheanswer2026 · Today 10:14

It sounds like they are used to eating rubbish food and don't like your healthier food. Your meals sound lovely and they have been very ungrateful and rude. It's definitely them not you.

SpaceRaccoon · Today 09:42

gayestgal · 06/08/2026 16:09

You are being nasty but its fine.

Your portions are too small and your breakfast offerings did not sound appealing to me or to your guests.

I would love to come to dinner please 😊

Echointhedarkness · 06/08/2026 13:47

It’s not you, they are unbelievably rude and ungrateful.

This all day long. And probably more so to minimise any gratitude to you they should feel. How awful for you.
If they can get in their car they should go home ungrateful cheeky fuckers.

pouletvous · Today 06:54

Why haven’t they budgeted for meals? What would they have eaten had they not been on holiday?

what a bunch of numpties

ypur husband sounds like a dick too

Airyfairy77 · Today 00:17

Your sister and family are incredibly rude and ungrateful, there’s nothing wrong with your meals. All I would say is a lot of kids wouldn’t eat porridge/yoghurt/fruit for breakfast so I’d have said to your sister ’this is what we’re having for brekkie if that’s not to your liking maybe get some bread/other cereal’ and also your spag bol portions sound a bit small, we have 100g spag each and use 500g of mince for 4 of us. But yeah, it’s your bloody holiday too, don’t invite them again!!

Justaquestionplease · 06/08/2026 13:56

They are being rude but 75g pasta each is a bit stingy imo

It’s a medium portion on my calorie app, presumably OP weighed it dried.

I wouldn't worry too much about some odd comments from an odd poster 😂

your sister and her family are rude and entitled brats. Shame on you for offering them a free holiday apparently. They're lucky you are offering anything more than toast for the duration of their visit.

(I bet some poster would still manage to start an argument about the proper toasting process, so maybe not 😂)

This.
Lesson learned.
Never invite your ghastly ill mannered sister and family again.
Your husband is a pillock too.
I would be feeding myself and telling husband and sister to crack on.
No way would I accept such rudeness.

Laurmolonlabe · Yesterday 23:29

They are taking advantage of you, and the contagion has started.
Why didn't they budget for food?
Did they just expect you to plan it , buy it, pay for then cook it- and now they are mocking your choices and cooking?-TBH I'd tell them all to fuck off and buy and cook their own food, scratch that you paid for the holiday- tell them to fuck off home immediately, they will get nothing, not even a Christmas card until you have a full apology.

Oh fuck off

Pasta is absolute fine to serve to guests.

You could also read the thread?

and read the discussion and the posts I was replying to?
And the many posts when I pointed out that some people had missed the irony? 😂

You do take random comments from complete strangers a bit personally don't you?

I love cooking. I purposely got somewhere with a nice big kitchen for this reason. DS and I are baking this afternoon.

Your son sounds lovely. Next time, just take him and ditch the rest!

I mean, I love pasta but on holiday? I'd be wanting to go out for a meal, not just eat a meal I eat constantly at home.

Well, the OP’s sister is welcome to go out for a meal if she wants to 🤷‍♀️

wellstopdoingitthen · Yesterday 22:11

I’m afraid I’d tell them to go home.

Blomama · Yesterday 21:54

We go away with groups/family often and always have a chat with a vague plan before hand about meals and who is contributing what. I suggest you do this. Eg dear sister, I was thinking of making a paella tonight, would that work for you lot? Oh you don't like mussels? Okay, how about chicken instead? Peas okay? Compromise and find some meals that suit everyone.

Zerosleep · Yesterday 21:31

They are being rude and ungrateful, nothing wrong with what you are cooking but if I were you, I wouldn’t be cooking for anyone anymore except myself.

I would be surprised if I was served a lazy dish like pasta when someone is "hosting". That's kids food and family food on busy work days.

Bit odd to serve pasta when you host guests? I'd make more of an effort but each to their own.
