AIBU to think everyone does what Betsy and Dylan did?

the Betsy and Dylan storyline in Corrie- is “everyone” really doing this? Or am I just too sheltered?

It's something I enjoy but don't do due to the risks, but I don't think "everyone" is doing it.

Missing the point but I know a woman age 42 who had a stroke… now I’m wondering if this was what she was doing 😆🙈 (thankfully she’s okay whatever the cause).

Hilarious… 🙄

Even people who talk about 'choking' during sex don't usually mean strangulation. They just mean they like their partner to put a hand on their throat as a dominance/restraint thing, not that they're being literally choked or strangled. Most people who do that aren't actually having pressure applied, it's just a hand on the throat.

what bullshit am I reading here?
putting a hand on someone's throat is DANGEROUS do you realise how little force is needed to make someone pass out? and that passing out like that can cause brain damage?
why is dominance erotic?
if you are moving in a world where your partners think this is normal then move in a different world or chose better partners

and maybe ask yourself why this is something men do to women and not vice versa

I've had to tell a woman that no, passing out during sex is not normal- I don't want to have to keep telling women that

really if that's what people think they need to enjoy sex then they are doing something wrong, plenty of us out here in long, long committed relationships still enjoying sex that doesn't involve domination, humiliation or pain. Sex is supposed to be FUN

No, not everyone is doing it. And it’s hugely dangerous to imply that they are because it normalises it.

I agree.
Sallys talk last night with the girl she is looking after was totally cringeworthy.
Coronation Street gets a 'topical' (or what they think is topical) controversial subject, and tries to make it into a public service warning....all they do is highlight an activity that most people dont give a second thought to.

Summerhillsquare · 06/08/2026 19:19

Interesting @BauhausOfEliottthat your lengthy and articulate defence doesn't mention the sex of the victim and perpetrators, or as you put it partners.

I use clips from the soaps quite a lot in lessons. Hollyoaks did a whole series called ‘this is abuse’ which were really useful and they did an excellent storyline on county lines.

Hollyoaks has always been brilliant for factual information. They were the only ones who covered HIV factually and without drama. Combined with Geordie Shore, they allowed easy discussions for my then teens (now 31 and 29) and their peer group.

but the point id ask is why do we need a tv soap to tell people, why dont people research these activities online before trying them etc

If only!

Pudmyboy · 06/08/2026 18:57

I hope that's sarcasm! I would think the point of Betsy suffering a stroke is to let people know that this is a dangerous activity, especially for the woman!

Blimey. Corrie has changed since my seven year old used to watch with his Grandmother

daft question but why, what do they achieve from doing the act ?

JustAnotherWhinger · 06/08/2026 18:49

I think it’s far more common than a lot of people realise.

many elder 3 are 24, 24 and 26 and they’ve all had choking mentioned/attempted during sex.

Horrifyingly my DS has said he and an ex tried it when they were 19 after seeing it in porn. They’re both horrified now at what a risk it was.

One of my DDs has dumped two boyfriends for doing it randomly during sex. She’s very open about her dislike of anything like this (she hates things around her neck to the point she can’t even wear a necklace).

Crikey even if she liked necklaces it's still a good reason to dump them!
Statistically women are far more likely to suffer injuries from this, as they are much more likely to be the ones it's being done to.

Do you have any evidence for this, even if it is just the Metro? I find this very hard to believe, all the data focusses on the airway being restricted. There is no safe 'breath play'.

Things have obviously moved on in Corrie since Annie Walker and Ena Sharples....

Havent they just
Its unwatchable imo
They are always " raising awareness " of something
Gone are they dsys humour and decent acting.

HarshbutTrue2 · 06/08/2026 18:10

I only watch the soaps occasionally. Often there is a murder in eastenders, emmerdale and corrie, all at the same time. This doesn't relate to my life at all. We don't have regular murders where I live.

How many murders in corrie this year? Billy and theo, anyone else? Emmerdale has had so many murders and kidnapping and fires. Its just normal to kidnap someone over something. Even kidnap a vague relation and steal their kidney. Nope. None of that happens in my life either.

All this violence on telly just normalises violence and bad behaviour. Its not good for society. It's all doom and gloom. Give me a nice rom com instead.
In fact, the soaps used to do romance and comedy, now there's no comedy and every romance ends in disaster.

I don't even know who Dylan and Betsy are. Let alone what they've been doing, though it appears to be another disaster. However, how many teenagers watch Corrie?? Very few, so what is the point of the storyline? And how is this family viewing?

P.s. who else has been doing strangulation in corrie? Ken Barlow? Steve? The people at the pub? Dev? Tyrone and fizz? The mind boggles.

I was thinking the same! It’s not a conversation that they are going to answer truthfully 😂

I can tell when they're lying, they're not very good at it! We've always been a family that talks openly about these things - I worked in a PRU and taught sexual health for years so it's always been an ongoing conversation with my children as they grew up!

Huge difference telling you about her friends kinks, I notice she’s not telling you her own.

Of course, I recognise that, but she’s also not saying any of her friends are doing it either. None of them. In a huge group of young 20 somethings.

MrHankyTheChristmasPoo2 · 06/08/2026 10:15

I have read it has become a normalised part of sex because of porn. Terrifying!

Hence it being on the PSHE curriculum. Porn has so much to answer for. I must admit I did wonder where the storyline had come from. I would like to commend Sydney Martin, who plays Betsy, for her incredible acting. She really is superb.

Deadleaves77 · 06/08/2026 17:24

I think the storyline is good in the fact it highlights the dangers of strangulation/choking.

I dont like the narrative that everyone is doing it or the characters just got unlucky. I still think that normalises the practice, perhaps teaches the audience there's a way it could be done safely if they'd been more experienced. I do think that there's a bit of sympathy being given to Dylan, when ultimately he strangled his partner. I don't think most people are doing it, even in younger age groups but probably enough are or at least enough are considering it "normal practice"

Also it normalises the watching of porn by all of characters who are 'doing it' as that's where they've got it from.

Stunned everyone thinks this is a young people thing IRL. The worst culprits when I was stuck in sex work were the silver haired brigade. That was 10 years ago though so maybe the demographic has changed but they were absolute bastards for it. I don’t know if the attribution of this behaviour to young men is more “Not my Derek” nonsense. Because I can assure you that Derek can and probably has. Wish it was illegal.

Do you mean that 10 years ago, this was being done?

moonraker0 · 06/08/2026 17:54

Sparrowsandbudgies · 06/08/2026 17:10

I’m not sure really. I think people with adult dc have far more explicit and frank conversations than we ever used to have with our own parents. My dd is 22 and we’ve talked about everything from her friends using butt plugs (!!) to one of them shitting on a transparent glass table whilst her boyfriend watches underneath (I kid you not) so I don’t see why when she says none of them would ever tolerate or even entertain someone choking them, why that’s so hard to believe. I am not naive enough to think people don’t do it, but young women in particular are becoming very anti it. It’s not a “normal” thing by any means.

Huge difference telling you about her friends kinks, I notice she’s not telling you her own.

I think you are viewing it from the other end of my telescope!
I understood it to be that the teenage characters involved are saying that 'Dylan must have done it wrong' because everyone is doing it without a bad outcome, in the way that younger teenagers say 'everybody has one' when in reality a couple of classmates are saying that they are getting one for Christmas (they hope) when trying to pressure a parent into providing some luxury item that they want.
I think that the scriptwriters are dealing with the subject very well and the actress is doing a great job.
