A friend's young colleague told her that dating was a nightmare as young men expect anal and choking thanks to the porn they watch. Poor things, who would want to be a young woman in today's culture?

A year or two ago there was a post on MN from a woman following a one night stand, where the man had started to strangle her. She pushed him away and he stopped immediately. But then she asked why he had done it and I have never forgotten the reply: ‘I thought that’s what women wanted.’

No. No, it isn’t. Some women in some situations where there have been proper discussions beforehand and proper safety measures in place, maybe. Random woman on a one night stand? No. Assuming all women? No.

He was clearly a nice man. He wasn’t doing it to hurt her, or even for his own kicks. He thought it was what SHE wanted.

And, I assume, he is not the only man to have thought that.

31 year old here who has encountered this more than once during one night stands. This was over 5 years ago (because I have been so traumatised by the events of that ‘sexually liberated’ era) and the men were older than me by a few years.

It is very well known amongst online circles of young women who have been traumatised, so yes, I do think you are sheltered if you don’t understand how much of an epidemic male violence towards women has infiltrated the sexual scene. Porn has ruined boys’ / mens’ minds. If you are not into bdsm you are a prude.

Baroness Bertin’s review included a 13 or 14 year old boy asking his male teacher how to strangle girls during sex. I feel so sad for girls growing up in this era.

I think if Corrie want to highlight a practice that seems to be quite common (and I admit I didn't realise it was, till I read some of the comments on here and also did a bit of online research) turning it into a public health warning, they could have had someone more believable than Sally giving a young woman the info.
She is more a cartoon character now, not someone the average youngster would take seriously....even if they do watch Corrie.

Having said that, Coronation Street often do tackle controversial subjects, and they do research them and treat them with common sense.
At least they have brought this subject into the public eye though, so that's a good thing, and I do think Becky is playing her part brilliantly.

I think it's a really good storyline and the more kids see that what is shown on porn sites isn't the norm the better.

43% of 16 -17yos experienced it during their first sexual encounter. 39% of 18 -20yos.

but even before social media people did risky activities eg black lace books, nexus books, nancy friday books etc so why dont people study what they are trying ?

Yes unfortunately due to the rise in violent and extreme pornography it is becoming a growing problem in younger people’s sex lives and problems arise about genuine safety and possible harm wether intentional or not, and also consent. @lalalaletmeexplain on instagram is a fantastic social worker who has done a lot on this topic in the past.

May be wrong, but isn’t the purpose of the storyline that this type of sex and the attitude towards it has become increasingly common due to the wonderful world of social media and clearly is dangerous, fairly sure many people don’t do it but it’s about getting a serious message across

It’s not just young people, I’m on normal dating sites where men bring this kind of shit up frequently, they are in their 30s and 40s!

I do the trustee stuff for a youth group, but my own work is younger children. So I was in the office yesterday.

Hi, I agree that this topic should be discussed if it is something that many males expect from girls/women. What I would prefer, rather than young people of a certain age being banned from certain Social media sites, is that the content be banned for sites that are easily accesible by young people. As for Andrew Tate and his brother, I would not entertain them - they must feel inadequate to pull women apart and ask for or expect excellence from the females they go out with, they are a joke. I've been married to a bully (when drunk), but too violent so I sent him packing. Been out with another who after a few months also showed his violence, also very jealous like my ex husband so he only lasted 8 months on and off. I have been out with some nice blokes since then, but also other controlling or very jealous men. When they show signs of extreme jealousy or suddenly start picking on the things I wear or how my hair is done, I cut loose. Trying to navigate life can be difficult as it is, without trying to please a male who wants to exert his influence and ask or coerce you to do things sexually that you are not happy with. Someone very young like Betsy is, should be enjoying life to the full and to me, no young person, male or female, should be made to feel different or frigid or anything less than normal, for not doing sexual acts that could lead to possible permanent damage to their bodies. I mean once that act suddenly becomes the norm, what next? I wish people would not look at porn when so young as they may think that the sexual acts shown are what everybody is doing. If a person does not want oral or anal sex, a threesome, an open relationship, etc and the other person insists that everyone else is doing it, cut them free, and keep control of what you are happy to do and be confident to refuse to do an act that you do not want to do. Be young, be foolish, and be happy as the song goes but stay safe, this life is not a rehearsal, so don't take chances. For men who may read this, do not try and force your fantasies on girls/women. How would you feel if it was your sister, your daughter or another close female being coerced/bullied to engage in dangerous sexual activities.

I think the idea is to open dialogue. It might prompt a teenager to speak to a parent or sibling about it - that a friend has tried it or their boyfriend/girlfriend has mentioned it or tried it.

Thank you for this thread. DGD and I have talked about these things before now, and they have been discussed in her PSE classes. It made it easier for me to remind her yet again about all the things she can say no to.

Many many people don’t. And some likely think watching lots of porn is research as a scary number of young people don’t seem to realise it’s not real

Hence the massive increase of young people, especially girls, ending up with injuries from anal sex as one example.
