AIBU to think an Edinburgh festival show about Meredith Kercher's murder should be stopped?

Aibu to think that this show at the Edinburgh Festival should be cancelled? It mocks the circumstances around the murder of Meredith Kercher and serves it up as entertainment.

Not only is it horribly disrespectful of Meredith's family, but it also belittles the issue of violence against girls and women.

Meredith's siblings are calling for it to be pulled from the festival. There is also a petition calling for it to be stopped.

Some posters won't acknowledge the pain of Meredith Kercher's family. Some are even accusing them on this thread of creating this furore, of seeking attention. Knox has been proven innocent and had many years to publicise and discuss how badly she was treated. Her books and films are available in perpetuity. She is performing in Edinburgh right now and will probably continue to do so elsewhere. It is in my opinion in very bad taste to create entertainment out of it, but she can certainly not claim to have been silenced in any way.

She has not been silenced.

Some tried, in this instance, but failed.

I do think the Kerchers were wrong to start the campaign, but I afford them (and people who personally knew Meredith) huge leeway. It's similar to how I'm opposed to capital punishment, but can be entirely sympathetic to directly impacted people feeling otherwise.

Emotions are powerful and actions based on them understandable but, fundamentally, I think foundational principles (like the promotion of justice and freedom of speech) are paramount.

I have no idea whether she’s guilty or not.

But just taking her decision to perform a comedy show at Edinburgh festival strikes me as a character trait of someone I would not like or respect. In the slightest.

Okay

That's where we are all different. I respect her more for doing the show and having the mental strength to continue when odds have been against her. X

You respect her more?

what made you respect her in the first place?

For not staying silent when others wanted her to. For continuing her life. Also, the show is fully sold out for a reason. People want to hear her story and good on her. X

I did laugh at the "it's not funny" as an intended defence.

Same. I had no opinion on her as a human being before learning of the show, but have a tonne of respect for what she's doing.

I wonder whether her separate criminal conviction, upheld by Italy’s highest court in 2025, featured in the show 🤔 After all, it arose directly from the same case.

Rachel nickels partner wrote a letter to Colin stagg apologising for their role in believing he was guilty - so different - here’s a short quote

In his letter, Mr Hanscombe, 46, says: "I am sorry for the ordeal that you have endured during virtually the whole length off this very sad affair, and any part that I might have had personally to make it worse."

people don’t seem so upset about the men wrongly accused - what about Knox’s boyfriend?

the show seems to be trying to publicise the danger to women and girls rather than dismiss it

I always thought MK family were respectful but I feel differently now

I did feel sorry for Raff as well but I was also annoyed that he let himself get played and told the police what they wanted to hear - that he couldn't be 100% certain Amanda had never left his flat that night.
The computer showed a movie had been watched at the time Meredith was murdered and early the next morning a music playlist (including Nirvana, popular in Seattle) was playing. On top of that an external witness spoke to Amanda at 8.40. I believe Amanda did stay over and the whole "see you later" text and whole other Satanic bs the prosecutor was interested in, led them down a dodgy path of quick arrests rather than awaiting DNA evidence.

The mop used to clean Raff's leak and returned to the cottage showed no blood on it. He spoke with his sister who worked for the police. I absolutely would have relied on him too to speak with them, if my Italian was basic. Would things have been different had they just gone on their daytrip rather than go back to her flat together then ending up raising the alarm? Undoubtedly.

Under interrogation, Raff threw her under the bus and when his lawyers later said to distance from her, drove over her. Allegedly he has said he would not consider doing a show about his experiences and would move on (he did write a book though as his costs were also £££ and he received no compensation) again throwing her under the bus (especially as he has himself been accused of making comments in bad taste about the murder itself).

Knox does not do that in this show and yes, had I been up in Scotland this year, I may well have gone to see it as I like monologues and am interested in stories about others' experience of motherhood (hence why I am on MN).

Maybe you should learn a bit more so you understand why it is considered such a gross miscarriage of justice. She is innocent because the was 100% cleared and Supreme Court of Italy confirmed it’s not on technicality or “beyond reasonable doubt” but because it is impossible for her ti be involved in any way.

in the context of gross miscarriage of justice and absolute insane witch-hunt in media (in Italian and British media) she can speak where and when she wants to in my opinion

also I’m one of the people thinking that she doesn’t owe Kerchers anything. Far from behaving with grace, they behaved like bullies over these years, personally campaigned against HER (and not for justice for Meredith) and never apologised for believing that she was involved. They probably believe she’s still guilty or whatever. Their tragedy doesn’t allow them to continue to vilify Amanda Knox.

I haven't signed any petitions. You seem to be arguing in a manner quite common now that criticism = cancelling. They are different things. It's a common technique of the far right at the moment.

I'm assuming you're replying to me (a genuine reminder on using the quote function to keep things coherent).

I didn't accuse you specifically of signing the petition, so please do not dishonestly impy that I did - I was merely pointing out that the assertion "she can certainly not claim to have been silenced in any way" rather minimizes that the topic of this thread is a call for her show to be canceled.

11AndCounting · 09/08/2026 06:02

The allegation is evidence (witness testimony). You yourself said as much:

"The accusation of physical violence was not proven. No evidence except Knox's accusation."

Everyone agrees there is no other evidence.

We just have different opinions on whether the allegation should is likely to be true or untrue.

In your head, you think your opinion has validity, but persistently dismiss everyone else's as "just an opinion", which is extremely obnoxious.

I guess I'm less sensitive than you if someone has a different opinion to me. It's just an opinion. No need for the insults.

I hadn't heard about this show.

I remember the case very clearly and found it extremely distressing. As far as I'm concerned Amanda Knox is guilty.

I support Meredith's family. The poor young woman's death is not entertainment.

Edited

Why do you think she’s guilty? What evidence, at all, have you seen that implies she might be?

AlphaApple · 09/08/2026 11:47

Amanda Knox was the victim of the most appalling miscarriage of justice. That is on record and accessible for any with half a brain and 5 minutes internet time.

We have freedom of speech in this country, thank goodness. If you think the show is not going to be to your liking then don’t buy tickets 🤷🏻‍♀️

SummerNocturnal · 09/08/2026 11:54

All the "guilters" won't give you express reasons because the majority of them were hearsay, bad reporting, suspect witnesses or apocryphal.
Many reasons given can be debunked straight away.
The rest are based on feelings not facts and there have often been suspects who are accused for not reacting the "correct" way or based on their physicality. I remember Christopher Jeffries.
The only question I have that is one of curiosity not victim-blaming, is why did she not flush the loo? What was it that made her instinctively not reach for the handle?
I'm fascinated by why we do or don't things and also by the idea you have a sixth sense/gift of fear/Spidey senses tinkling that lead us unconsciously to make the choices we do.

Ilovelurchers · 09/08/2026 12:16

I cannot imagine the anger Knox must feel for having been falsely accused so publicallty, her privacy decimated, , and having years of her life wasted in custody accused of a horrific crime she didn't commit. In all of this I feel deep sympathy for her.

Notwithstanding this, she does appear to have a personality it is almost impossible to like (for me anyway - I don't know her personally but am basing this on everything I have seen and read, from her and about her). There is a trait of extreme, tasteless attention-seeking exhibitionism, which I think was partially responsible for her being accused in the first place (and I am in no way suggesting she deserved everything that happened - of course she didn't).

I have watched the clip of her show someone shared above and must admit that it immediately got my hackles up, as it is even more of her self-aggrandizing, "look at me and how special and wonderful I am" tedious nonsense - just like the ITV drama (which hands up and to my slight shame I am currently watching!)

Did any single person reading this thread watch that and think that anything she said was funny? None of it was funny! It was just lots of different ways of saying "Look at me! Look at me!"

I do think it must all be really upsetting for Meredith Kercher'a parents, and it would have been nice if Knox had considered this and chosen not to launch this absolute drivel. But she does have the right to, and I suppose it dates her desire for attention - and people will go and see it for the ",freak show" appeal she has always had.....

But it's NOT FUNNY!!!! Or am I wrong? Did anyone laugh even once at that clip?

SpaceRaccoon · 09/08/2026 12:31

@Ilovelurchers both of Meredith's parents have passed away now.

The evidence is that it was Guede who did not flush the loo after defecating in it, not Knox.

By the way, I have had someone who continues to believe in Knox's guilt explain their reasoning. They continue to believe the discredited forensic evidence given by Patrizia Stefanoni, the police forensic scientist. I have been told confidently that Kercher's DNA was on the blade of the knife the police claim was the murder weapon despite the fact that we know from her notes that Stefanoni was lying about this (and, indeed, much of her other evidence such as the claimed bloody footprints).
