AIBU to think an Edinburgh festival show about Meredith Kercher's murder should be stopped?

VivienneDelacroix · 06/08/2026 01:04

Aibu to think that this show at the Edinburgh Festival should be cancelled? It mocks the circumstances around the murder of Meredith Kercher and serves it up as entertainment.

Not only is it horribly disrespectful of Meredith's family, but it also belittles the issue of violence against girls and women.

Meredith's siblings are calling for it to be pulled from the festival. There is also a petition calling for it to be stopped.

Having s voice is one thing.

Making money from that experience is another thing entirely.

This woman seems set to eat out for decades on the back of the murdered girl. That is what is shameful here.

Her arrest and imprisonment cost her family millions, this isn't profiteering for luxury. And her false imprisonment is her story to tell, and sell.

museumum · 06/08/2026 15:43

I think it's distasteful and I won't go and would prefer if she hadn't done it. But the whole point of the Fringe is that it is not curated or edited or approved, anybody can put on a show about anything so long as it isn't hate speech. There's no quality control and certainly no appropriateness/tastefulness control. That is the point of the Fringe (vs. the International Festival which is curated).

I didn’t sign the petition. I don’t think it should be banned - as I said in the post you replied to.

We know how gifted (or not) she is because she has hardly been a shy and retiring wallflower since her stint in prison. She’s a public figure. We know the quality of the work she produces. Why would this be any different?

Has she done stand-up before? I don't have an opinion on how good she is, anyway, and I don't think it's relevant to the ethics of the matter. The show is about her own experiences.

I have no idea whether she has those skills or not. Stand-up isn't my genre at all. But she's entitled to do it whether she does it well or badly, and I don't see how anyone signing this petition could know how gifted or otherwise she is.

How many years ago?

The media would have faded away if she had lived a private life. The ‘media’ didn’t write two books, a tv show and a fringe show…. Amanda did. It’s tiresome.

I don’t think it should be banned. But I also don’t think she’s clever, empathetic or sensitive enough to write a genuinely funny show about this. Comedy needs a very ‘human’ side to be able to make the aftermath of a young woman being brutally sexually assaulted and having her throat cut actually funny. I am not sure Amanda actually has those skills.

But you can turn that around.
The true crime Netflix type docs are going to be made, with or without Knox's permission or cooperation (and have been).
Herself and her own family and friends will have been harangued in the same way your DP's friend was.
Therefore Knox has taken it into her own hands to set the record straight. She has done her own books and productions to regain control of the narrative built around her, which she had no control over.
I think that is her way of coming to terms with it and recover from it.

Yes, she doesn't actually have an option that involves no media interest at all. It would flare up on anniversaries, whenever Guede does anything else or gets out again, whenever anyone associated with the case does anything someone else might find worthy of comment. Something that got as much media interest as that and continues to attract a dim but committed cohort of guilt truthers isn't ever going to go away.

So DP's friend would have felt better if he'd profited from his friend's horiffic death and his own lifethreatening injuries? As well as the production companies who used 'we'll just do it anyway, so you might as well join in' as a direct threat?

Nah.

You want to silence a victim of a miscarriage of justice because you personally think - without any awareness of what she actually says in the show - it is distasteful.

Well done yourself.

SwirlyGates · 06/08/2026 14:21

I'm in two minds about this. I think doing this as a comedy is in very bad taste - a drama, or telling her story in a thoughtful way, would be different. It's also traumatising for her family. On the other hand I believe more and more in free speech, which I suppose means I have to accept her right to say what she wants.

I read a lot, I watch news, read X. I had no idea she'd written books (I may read her books now though, so thank you for mentioning).
I'd've had no idea either of her fringe show, if Meredith's sister hadn't gone on TV to talk about it.
Edited to add, why should she lead a 'private' life? She was thrust into the media spotlight, thus she's 100% entitled to control the narrative wherever she can. She has nothing to be ashamed of, so no reason to hide herself away.

TheBrunswick · 06/08/2026 14:12

It’s interesting that the show has opted out of audience reviews.
Presumably Amanda Knox doesn’t want to be subjected to hate based on people’s understanding of the murder according to what they’ve read in the tabloids.

Right from the start I thought AN was innocent because her immediate behaviour was of someone in shock.
The problem is that many detectives think that someone like AN should behave in a certain way and she didn’t fit the stereotype. She was also terrified and lied when bullied by the Italian police.
The Italian police have, imo, a lot to answer in this case.

Malasana · 06/08/2026 14:10

She’s entitled to tell her story over and over as she pleases. Just as everyone else is entitled not to attend the show.

AK suffered a huge injustice. If she wants to speak publicly about it, fair enough.

SummerNocturnal · 06/08/2026 14:06

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/08/2026 12:58

They're morally reprehensible.

A friend of DP's was the victim in a brutal attack where another person they were close to was murdered.

Every couple of years or so, they get contacted by production companies wanting to do a programme about it - they bombard DP's friend, their partner, ex partners, friends, people they went to school with, employers, offering money to give details of what they were like, what happened, what the friend did next, what they're doing now, whether they look like they're having a good time. Generally followed up with threatening them with exposure of their sex life and suggesting that perhaps they were actually involved in some way if they don't take part. I don't suppose for one moment that DP's friend would find it anything other a repeat of all the trauma of the original event, the press coverage, the continued harassment from utterly amoral production companies in the pursuit of money and maybe an award, appearances on podcasts to talk about how they 'investigated' without a single mention of the threats they made (things like 'We've found this - how would you like us sending it to your 84 year old grandmother? I hear she's not too well at the moment, shall we visit her in hospital?') if somebody had later appealed against their conviction and won to then go on tour with a comedy show about how amusing some of it was.

All for profit and entertainment.

But you can turn that around.

I think it's the siblings who are complaining, not the parents. According to wikipedia, one parent died in a hit and run and the other of covid. Not sure if that's true or not but, if it is, the siblings have been through an unbelievable amount of loss and trauma so anybody presenting any kind of 'light side' to any of it must seem unbearable. Amanda Knox has the whole of the US to perform in. I know Edinburgh Fringe is special and she is within her rights to perform there but I think she is insensitive to choose to do so.

Yes, Meredith's parents both died prematurely.

No one I love has ever been brutally raped and murdered so I cannot imagine the pain Merediths family feel, but I was assualted by a celebrity Jimmy Savile and I can confirm that the Steve Coogan series and the 28 years later film which treated a lot aspects of hte rapists life as a quirky joke profoundly disturbed me. So I do have an understanding how someone making a living from your pain causes you to relive the crime and prevents you from moving on.

I am so, so sorry for what you suffered.

What I found powerful about the SC drama was that it gave shape and clarity to a nightmarish, horrific story that before had been hard to imagine, and focused my energy towards the people he targeted rather than on hating him. I hope that makes sense.

SummerNocturnal · 06/08/2026 13:57

Yeah and the real murderer Rudy Guede did a 16 year sentence for Meredith's murder.

He remains in Italy and faced new court action following accusations by a former girlfriend. He stands trial for alleged sexual assault, personal injury, and mistreatment.

Doesn't look like his jail time reformed him.

Indeed and I think he only served thirteen.

The problem in this case has always been that Knox places herself as the biggest victim in the whole thing, and continues to create such a circus about it all...

That's simply not true. The media created the 'circus' around Amanda Knox - largely because she was attractive, the media went all out on the femme fatale angle.

The problem in this case has always been that Knox places herself as the biggest victim in the whole thing, and continues to create such a circus about it all that I truly don’t think anything written by her about it will be funny.

In order to be funny about such an awful topic you need to be able to write - and deliver - the piece with an extraordinary amount of sensitivity and empathy to people who loved the person who was brutally sexually assaulted and murdered in a time of her life when she should have been having the absolute best time ever. The way Knox carries on, and the way she answered the question about whether Meredith Kercher would have found it funny, is just so oblivious and insensitive and unempathetic I just truly don’t think she has the skill. That was partly why she got sent to prison! She leaves people cold.

I think what happened to Knox is dreadful, and she is a victim. I just think what happened to Meredith was worse.

No, I will absolutely not be signing that petition.

Amanda Knox is entitled to tell her personal story.

I can get my head around Meredith's family reacting as they have, but shame on anyone else who signs that petition.

A friend of mine went to school with Meredith. It's affecting many more people than her family. The fact that Amanda Knox has so much spotlight on her and Meredith is almost seen as secondary to Amanda is what hurts those who knew Meredith.
She's told her personal story many times, something Meredith will never get to do. To turn it into entertainment and comedy is highly inappropriate and is causing more pain to the people who are already living with the most awful circumstances of their sister's death.

No, she was actually entirely exonerated. She was declared to be innocent.

YABU. Amanda Knox is entitled to conduct her life as she sees fit.

The media was (is!) obsessed with Amanda Knox, there was a great deal written and said about her, thus it's entirely understandable that she'd want to use whatever avenue she feels comfortable with to tell her own story. If anyone is to blame for the victim largely being forgotten, it's the media. Not Knox herself.

I also think that any 'encouragement' of regurgitated gossip about Amanda Knox is entirely out of order - she was aquitted by the highest court.

YoQuieroVino · 06/08/2026 13:22

MayaPyjama · 06/08/2026 12:59

You don’t know she’s innocent - courts generally rule people guilty or not guilty. Not guilty is not the same as innocent.

Whatever she did though, I don’t like Amanda Knox for the way she reacted through the trial and investigation, or how she’s profited from it afterwards - but it is her life too and she is fully entitled to do what she wants with her story.

So while she won’t get my money, and I think the show is disrespecting and tasteless, I will defend her right to do the show because that’s how free speech works, and we should protect that at all costs.

No, she was actually entirely exonerated. She was declared to be innocent.

DancingonmyOwn88 · 06/08/2026 10:06

The true crime aspect of this a huge draw for many. I doubt many of the audience have bought tickets to see her ‘comedy’ but more to see a real life ‘famous’ person who was involved in a huge crime. And no I don’t think Amanda should be given any further platform to profit from Meredith’s death. She’s told her story multiple times in many forms.

Edited

She's not profiting form Meredith's death though, she's "profiting" from the awful things that happened to her.
