AIBU to think an Edinburgh festival show about Meredith Kercher's murder should be stopped?

VivienneDelacroix · 06/08/2026 01:04

Aibu to think that this show at the Edinburgh Festival should be cancelled? It mocks the circumstances around the murder of Meredith Kercher and serves it up as entertainment.

Not only is it horribly disrespectful of Meredith's family, but it also belittles the issue of violence against girls and women.

Meredith's siblings are calling for it to be pulled from the festival. There is also a petition calling for it to be stopped.

There isn't a chance in hell everyone would feel differently, because as this thread demonstrates, there persist a group of people who still believe she's guilty. Which means there isn't a way for her to speak out about what happened to her that wouldn't draw some criticism. It's not possible.

Speaking for myself, I don't see how she can possibly be guilty and I don't understand the thinking. My only objection to the show is the comedy side of things and I wouldn't object to that if she was going about it in a different and more tactful way.

I must admit, I have signed this petition. Not because I don't believe she should tell her story, but because I think the platform is inappropriate. Amanda Knox was cleared and released but did spend time in prison in a country where she had no family or friends, couldn't really speak the language and was judged by the world, so I imagine she has many thoughts and feelings about this that she needs to express. But not in a comedy show, it just feels tacky, ill judged and thoughtless. If she wanted to give a sort of talk or take part in some kind of programme where wrongly convicted people share their experiences I think everyone would feel differently.

It is in terrible taste and wildly callous towards the Kercher family. Amanda Knox has already told her story, repeatedly. Coming to the UK to monetise her experience through a comedy show is, at best, terrible judgment and, at worst, cruelly indifferent. I think something is a bit wrong with Amanda Knox to be doing this.

It's Knox's story though not Meredith. It's about what it was like to en convicted of something you didn't do.

Go to the press, can you share the post outing the production company here? Is it on public socials?

DP's friend doesn't want the press intrusion that would come from contacting the media to complain about the media - who would probably love the publicity of getting them to appear to talk about how they don't want to be forced, bullied and blackmailed into talking about it. ETA: it would be fantastic publicity for the amoral scum's programmes, after all.

It's multiple companies over the years, all with the same methods of trying to coerce victims into providing better soundbites for selling the shows (usually say they're doing it for Channel 4, though, which is in keeping with where so many of these vulture shows are broadcast before flogging for satellite TV and endless reruns/podcasts/etc).

They have been permanently traumatised as a result of the original event and every time they are contacted again, it's a whole new trauma on top of the previous ones.

I think its in poor taste as a form of entertainment. But I am not sure it should be banned. She claims she can’t live a normal life and I guess has to earn a living. Though others do disappear and lives normal lives - as a comparison no one ever hears about Louise Woodward anymore and that was very high profile at the time. For sure its about attention, but I guess that’s her choice after being falsely accused of murder.

Louise Woodward was/is prohibited from selling her story, under the terms of a settlement agreement.

ExtraOnions · 06/08/2026 22:15

…so people who haven’t seen a show, and don’t know the content, have signed a petition to ban the thing that they haven’t seen, based on assumptions about the show, made by other people who also haven’t seen the show?

Welcome to 2026.

DP's friend did. And does every time one of them gets in touch after the usual ignoring and blocking doesn't make them go away.

Nobody cares.

While misogyny is a significant factor in the way she was perceived as unlikeable - it wasn’t the only factor. She tried to falsely implicate her boss at the time of the murder. The way she talks about what happened there is interesting too - she states she ‘feels guilt’ about ‘what happened to Patrick’. Mate, YOU happened to Patrick. No accountability at all. It didn’t just ‘happen’, she made it happen to him by lying about him.

She falsely implicated him while under extreme pressure to do so, in the same interview where she was pressured into falsely admitting her own involvement.

She did so while under extreme psychological manipulation, physical intimidation (including allegedly being repeatedly), and sleep deprivation - while being denied access to counsel and having only a basic grasp of the language she was being interrogated in, to the extent she did not even fully understand the statement she was signing.

Among its other findings, the European Court of Human Rights ruled her treatment in that interview to have contravened Article 3 of the convention (Prohibition of Torture and Inhumane Treatment).

I do not think she can reasonably held accountable for what she was abused and coerced into doing by the authorities, in her circumstances. The blame is with the police.

No, the police happened to Patrick. They badgered an exhausted, confused young women for days, in a language she could speak only basically, and even hit her. You make it sound like she calculatedly tried to frame him or something.

Forensics had shown that it was a black man who committed the crime, and the police were itching for that man to be an associate of Meredith's.

I second that question @@MNHQ

Over 350 million people, all lacking in class? I think stereotyping is always ugly and shouldn't be tolerated here.

And there is no doubt that a lot of the dislike of her is driven by anti American xenophobia.

It happened 20 years ago. She seems to have an endless supply of means to discuss her arrest and imprisonment for money.
Many people have been wrongly arrested and imprisoned, they don’t keep rearing their heads every year?
She’s made Meredith’s murder her career.
In 2010, I may have given her some time but 2026? We all know the story - just stop.

The murder happened 19 years ago (2007). Knox was released 15 years ago (2011) and ultimately acquitted 11 years ago, in 2015.

Yeah, I'm sure you'd have given her loads of time in 2010....

Her case was easily the most globally saturated, cross-continental media circus for a wrongfully accused individual in modern history, leaving it nigh-on impossible for her to live an anonymous life. The media output from her is a drop in the ocean compared to the coverage about her.

As much as some people might want to shut her up, and brush off what her treatment reveals of the pervasiveness and harmfulness of misogyny, I'm glad she has the courage to do otherwise.

VivienneDelacroix · 06/08/2026 13:46

A friend of mine went to school with Meredith. It's affecting many more people than her family. The fact that Amanda Knox has so much spotlight on her and Meredith is almost seen as secondary to Amanda is what hurts those who knew Meredith.
She's told her personal story many times, something Meredith will never get to do. To turn it into entertainment and comedy is highly inappropriate and is causing more pain to the people who are already living with the most awful circumstances of their sister's death.

Until the show has been seen, it's impossible to say she's making comedy out of murder. Knox has a right to discuss the terrible things that happened to her.

AndImVictoriaMalcolm · 06/08/2026 21:25

That poor family. Meredith was largely forgotten I think, in the aftermath of her horrible murder and they’ve had so much loss since.

AsHot · 06/08/2026 21:24

It's sus the way critics of Knox's actions are minimising what actually happened to her. Comparison to Sollecito who received a lesser sentence and wasn't subject to misogyny. Referring to her dining out on the murder without bothering to mention the wrongful imprisonment.

InterIgnis · 06/08/2026 21:24

Amanda Knox really was/is the victim of a witch hunt, and it’s something she’ll always be (in)famous for. Not only was it personally devastating for her and her family, but financially devastating also.

If this is her way of feeling a modicum of control over it all, then why not? And why shouldn’t she capitalize? Plenty of people have capitalized off of her, so why not her?

Isitevensummer · 06/08/2026 21:23

11AndCounting · 06/08/2026 03:39

No, I will absolutely not be signing that petition.

Amanda Knox is entitled to tell her personal story.

I can get my head around Meredith's family reacting as they have, but shame on anyone else who signs that petition.

This 100%. I have heard Knox be interviewed several times and have thought she was respectful and sensitive to Meredith. It seems that this might be a case of anything she says being wrong in some people's eyes. I can understand why it might concern Merediths family, but Knox has a right to tell her story. And until the show has been seen, it impossible to say if it's disrespectful.

I wish they did. It's important to know how miscarriages of justice happen. But people have to attend to their own lives and well-being,all in their own ways

Amanda Knox needs to piss off.
She’s been dining out on Meredith’s murder for nearly 20 years - books, movies, tv shows, interviews, now comedy? That’s distasteful and shameful.

She’s been ‘dining out’ on her experience of being wrongly convicted of murder and spending 4 years in prison for that wrongful conviction.

UneFoisAuChalet · 06/08/2026 21:10

SpaceRaccoon · 06/08/2026 21:03

If she's simply been her friend and housemate, and was monitising that, then yes it would be. But you're glossing over her arrest and imprisonment.

And the British tabloids never cared so much about him and his sex life.

They have different characters, different experiences, and different stories to tell

This, this, this!

Well said.

Yes, it's an excellent post. It's incredible to think that batshit, prurient sex game gone wrong concoction could've happened so recently. Some miscarriages of justice are inevitable in any system, but the particularly misogynistic and sexualised nature of this one was remarkable.
