AIBU to think an Edinburgh festival show about Meredith Kercher's murder should be stopped?

Aibu to think that this show at the Edinburgh Festival should be cancelled? It mocks the circumstances around the murder of Meredith Kercher and serves it up as entertainment.

Not only is it horribly disrespectful of Meredith's family, but it also belittles the issue of violence against girls and women.

Meredith's siblings are calling for it to be pulled from the festival. There is also a petition calling for it to be stopped.

I’ve just had a look and I think OP
you've posted a misleading opening thread

it certainly isn’t billed to be about mocking the circumstances around MK death - it’s billed as a chance to hear AK speak about her experience of being wrongly accused because of the way the world saw her and how that links to the patriarchy (my word) - which we know also links to the murder of women and girls - satire is often used to ta Joe difficult subjects

at the same time I bet people only booked to see it to see her in the flesh!

and also I can understand how it would feel for the family - anything around MK death

but I agree overall that AK should not be silenced - I can see why it’s called cartwheeled - again her behaviour as a women was disproportionately judged

I dont think she will actually be talking of the murder - it’s a show about patriarchy and the danger of it

Do you not thing she could have stuck to the US and other places? There’s really no need for her to bring this to the Meredith’s home country when the Kercher family are so clear they don’t want it. In particular, I saw Meredith’s sister say Meredith would have hated the show while Knox has claimed Meredith would have liked it. I think that shows a fair bit of disrespect towards Meredith tbh.

It isn't. Because she was denied all other opportunities when she was in prison, and the outstanding criminal conviction also precludes some things even now.

The fact that she's been the victim of a colossal miscarriage of justice has indeed opened up the performance, autobiography and interview type opportunities to her though, you're not wrong there. There's a very big market for true crime! She obviously couldn't perform a show about what she went through if she'd never gone through it. You and I have never been subject to international misogynistic witch hunts, so us attempting to do an Edinburgh fringe show about our experiences of it probably wouldn't attract much interest.

Exactly - it’s prob the most known MOJ worldwide

Indeed

but to say she’s been denied opportunities is speculation

I very much doubt she’d be performing at Edinburgh festival without her history

It’s the fringe festival - lots of people perform there - relatively easy to get a spot for many

are you mixing it up with the Edinburgh festival?

but I don’t think she would have been “sold out” if it wasn’t her

Has a crimal record - it’s a fact that affects opportunities

Well… not from Edinburgh festival organisers
or literary agents

Nobody knows that, nobody in here has claimed that, and its weird that you keep banging on about it.

Yep, which again is why I didn't say that. I don't make arguments I think are really shit.

Meanwhile, I wonder if the poster who claimed she could've done anything is going to come back and flesh that out a bit for us?

Obviously. The prison time and the fact that she still has a criminal conviction mean she's missed out on lots of opportunities for work. She wasn't in the labour market for several years because of being banged up, so that's a certainty.

I'm glad you've broadened this just beyond do you know she missed out on any specific job offers, as the issue is clearly way wider than that.

But none of that changes the fact that a convicted criminal whose three year sentence arose from this very case, has now chosen to turn that case into a comedy show. I'm sure many people will find that deeply distasteful alone.

The show is about her experience being the subject of the MOJ not the murder

and how she is going to explain it to her children - that she was a victim of our patriarchal world

satire is often used to talk about the darkest parts of our society and highlight experience

She's already performed the show in the US and it is about her experiences, her false conviction and time in prison.
She's not up there making jokes about the murder.

Paddingtonsmarmaladesandwich2 · 07/08/2026 20:43

Satire is often used as a vehicle to address the darkest parts of our society - the show isn’t about MK murder - it’s about the miscarriage of justice the whole world watched and this women was on the end of

Or the fact that she was not guilty of Meredith's murder, or that the court concluded that her direct material involvement in the attack was physically and logistically impossible.

Or the fact that she was subject to various violations of her human rights.

But none of that changes the fact that a convicted criminal whose three year sentence arose from this very case, has now chosen to turn that case into a comedy show. I'm sure many people will find that deeply distasteful alone.

It’s not about Meredith.

Amanda Knox is allowed to make a show about her experiences and about gross miscarriage of justice towards her (which luckily had been corrected)

Yes and she has said she takes MK murder extremely seriously

I see it more as they are two women who were let down by a society that views women a certain way and frequently murders them - this one is getting to tell her story about being subject to miscarriage of justice when it was a man who actually murdered MK- we shouldn’t be silencing this women

11AndCounting · 07/08/2026 20:36

Cagoenlaleche · 07/08/2026 20:31

The law needs evidence. You can't pick and choose which parts you think are ok to accept. Knox and Sollecito were freed because the court confirmed the police evidence was flawed. They proved it. Similarly, you can't accuse the Police of violence just on the say so of the accused.

I can absolutely pick and choose what parts I believe, thanks. You seem to be mistaking me for a court asked with determining whether a crime occurred beyond all reasonable doubt.

On a lower, balance of probabilities basis - and noting the pattern of illegality demonstrated by the police, and that they prevented the allegations being investigated, I'm inclined to believe Knox.

Randallscandal · 07/08/2026 20:34

if That wasn’t what were you saying… what was your point?

Randallscandal · 07/08/2026 20:33

AsHot · 07/08/2026 20:32

That non-sequitur doesn't answer my question. How did it imply that? If you're going to claim things, expect to be asked to back them up.

So You do or you don’t think AK has missed out on lots of opportunities for work, or you do?

prh47bridge · 07/08/2026 20:32

Cagoenlaleche · 07/08/2026 20:19

There is no evidence she was beaten or physically abused by the police. Check your facts.

Knox asserted that a policewoman struck her during the interrogation. She was sued for defamation on this basis. The courts found in her favour, implicitly confirming that she had indeed been subjected to police violence. Check your facts.

AsHot · 07/08/2026 20:32

Randallscandal · 07/08/2026 20:29

So you don’t think that AK has had doors closed to her. Right
