AIBU to think an Edinburgh festival show about Meredith Kercher's murder should be stopped?

VivienneDelacroix · 06/08/2026 01:04

Aibu to think that this show at the Edinburgh Festival should be cancelled? It mocks the circumstances around the murder of Meredith Kercher and serves it up as entertainment.

Not only is it horribly disrespectful of Meredith's family, but it also belittles the issue of violence against girls and women.

Meredith's siblings are calling for it to be pulled from the festival. There is also a petition calling for it to be stopped.

She is a victim of a miscarriage of justice .. and the show (very clearly) all about her.

…still can’t work out what she’s done wrong

Me neither

I don’t remember Rachel nickels family or the public hating Colin stagg - on the contrary - they have sympathy for him - and he didn’t even wrongly do time

Agree. Attention seeking professional victim who makes it all about HER.

Omg the women can’t win - do you want her to talk about Mk more?? I thought that’s what you were against

So seriously she's doing comedy about it.

She’s a comedian talking about the devastation of being subject to MOJ related to mysogeny and patriarchy, not the murder

Edinburgh Fringe operates on an open‑access, free‑expression model. Open‑access artistic spaces must allow uncomfortable work, provided it does not incite harm or violence. However, the ethical burden lies heavily on Knox: she must ensure the show treats Meredith Kercher’s memory with dignity and avoids exploiting the tragedy.

The Kercher family’s pain is real and deserves respect. But censorship based on anticipated offence, especially when critics haven’t seen the work, sets a dangerous precedent for artistic expression. Knox’s behaviour aligns with someone who wants recognition of injustice, not vengeance. She is trying to correct the record, reclaim her humanity, and critique the systems that failed her. Those goals can look like revenge from the outside, but they are fundamentally different.

The ethical tension is real: her healing process intersects with another family’s grief. That’s the tragedy at the heart of this controversy.

Very well said - esp the intersection

Well we’ll have to agree to disagree then. I think choosing to come here is deliberately provocative. As was the choice of name for the show. I get that provocation is often the point of comedy, but I feel about this the same as I did when Frankie Boyle was making jokes about Madeline McCann. Disgusted by anyone who laughs.

The choice of the name for the show links to the mysogeny - she’s not celebrating it - She’s drawing attention to it - I think you misunderstand

I am aghast at anyone thinking she shouldn’t tell her story and how it links to patriarchy and the conjuring up of “foxy knock” in the media - it needs to be said

One movie. Other people wrote and researched them. You hardly heard from them again as they wanted to get on with their lives out of the spotlight. Lots of people are the victims of a miscarriage of justice. They don't spend their whole lives reliving it in the spotlight.

It’s likely the only way she can recoup the millions her family lost on her defense, in an amount of time that will allow them to actually benefit from it.

Who's been the victim of one as globally high profile as Knox, in the internet era, with the attendant misogyny too and a continuing cohort of truthers who like to say she's guilty whenever the case comes up? If you want to make comparisons, they will need to be valid.

"Always picking on Amanda"? I've never spoken about her, posted about her, or anything else about her in my life apart from 3 posts on this thread.

But your type do always pick on the woman and are strangely silent on the role of the largely male police force.

And you avoided the question which shows you and your friends have done nothing worthwhile.

YABU. Knox is a victim in all of this and spent 4 years in prison for a crime she didn’t commit and then the rest of her life being vilified by the press. I feel terribly for Meredith’s family but I just don’t understand what they stand to gain with their hatred for her? It’s not a zero sum game and Amanda trying to rehabilitate her reputation in whatever way she can should not be seen as slight on Meredith’s legacy. People might not like Amanda but they don’t need to buy her books or see her shows. This petition feels vindictive. Just my opinion - happy to acknowledge others may feel differently.

I think the reality is that Meredith's family still believe she's guilty, so anything she does will upset them.

In fact, I think that's the case with pretty much all of her critics. They think how dare she be out there in public, bold as brass, rather than skulking away in shame after what she did and got away with.

Because anyone who believes she's innocent will likely support her right to talk about her horrendous experience.

Instead of always picking on Amanda, have you and your friend ever thought about writing to the Italian police about their incompetence and the effect it’s had on your friends ? Or campaigning against the Italian police?

Because the reason Amanda’s family was bankrupted was because of the Italian police and justice system yet you seem to have very little to say about that.

I don't know if Amanda Knox plans to do her show anywhere else in the UK, but I hope it would be nowhere near where Meredith Kercher lived and grew up.

A friend of mine went to school with Meredith. It's affecting many more people than her family. The fact that Amanda Knox has so much spotlight on her and Meredith is almost seen as secondary to Amanda is what hurts those who knew Meredith.
She's told her personal story many times, something Meredith will never get to do. To turn it into entertainment and comedy is highly inappropriate and is causing more pain to the people who are already living with the most awful circumstances of their sister's death.

It's clear that no one expected to get the play cancelled in reality, but to send a message that many think it's (at least) distasteful.

Those buying tickets have been able to send a message that they support Knox's right to express herself, and those signing the petition have been able to send a message that they support the Kercher family who are expressing their right to oppose the show.

Hi all.

We’re stepping in with a reminder to please keep the discussion focused on the subject of the thread, rather than on other posters.

This is clearly a subject people feel strongly about and robust disagreement is absolutely fine, but personal remarks, speculation about other posters’ motives or identities, and accusations about whether someone is posting in good faith aren’t helpful and risk derailing the discussion - and in many of those cases, break our Talk guidelines.

We’ve removed a number of posts and may remove further posts where necessary.

Equally, lots of people think the criticisms are stupid. They're both an exercise of free speech which, as you correctly point out, works both ways. This is why I'm surprised to hear you say you can't understand why people who champion free speech, like you have, could also sneer at others exercising theirs, like you have. You did it yourself. That too is free speech.

👍

I described the show as abhorrent because that is genuinely many people view it. Others are free to criticise my view, just as I’m free to criticise the show. That rather proves my point.. freedom of speech works both ways and doesn’t mean freedom from criticism.

'Extreme duress' is your interpretation, not an established fact... Calling the petition stupid, well yeah if those are the words you wish to use and saying it generated publicity doesn’t change why some people objected to the show and still disagree. Not sure why some people like to champion freedom of speech while sneering at other people for exercising theirs.

I have set out the findings of fact made by the Italian courts about the interrogation she faced. To repeat:

  • She was interrogated for over 12 hours a day by 12 police officers
  • Much of the questioning was in the small hours of the morning
  • She was deprived of sleep, food and water
  • She was beaten by the police, repeatedly slapped and called a liar
  • She did not have a lawyer present as required by Italian law. Note that the police were required to proved a lawyer even if she didn't ask for one
  • The interpreter provided was incompetent and believed her job was to help the police to get Knox to implicate herself and Lumumba, in line with the police's theory
  • The police made false claims about the evidence and became aggressive when she refused to change her story and implicate Lumumba

The Italian courts have decided that all the above statements are established facts. If that falls short of extreme duress in your book, what does qualify?

Just clearing up your inaccuracy. Yeah, 👍 agreeing to disagree isn't that what debate is about : )

What inaccuracy 😂

Re the last sentence. You referred to Knox's exercise of her free speech as abhorrent earlier in the thread, and agreed earlier with a post saying those who've posted in support of her right to exercise it at Edinburgh were completely lacking in decency. So maybe if you think back to how you were feeling when you wrote that, it'll help you understand.
