AIBU to think an Edinburgh festival show about Meredith Kercher's murder should be stopped?

VivienneDelacroix · 06/08/2026 01:04

Aibu to think that this show at the Edinburgh Festival should be cancelled? It mocks the circumstances around the murder of Meredith Kercher and serves it up as entertainment.

Not only is it horribly disrespectful of Meredith's family, but it also belittles the issue of violence against girls and women.

Meredith's siblings are calling for it to be pulled from the festival. There is also a petition calling for it to be stopped.

@Cagoenlaleche

It's often hard to follow exactly who or what point you are responding to, as you're not using the quote function.

Cagoenlaleche · 08/08/2026 20:30

How can I make anything up? Those accepting blindly that the police beat her are not using evidence, just their opinion. I have an opinion that it would be very unusual for a white American teen to be physically assaulted in any EU country by the police. I just refuse to say it's true, because there is no empirical evidence, just supposition and an allegation.

You think it wouldn’t be reviewed, posted on social media and picked up by the press

Of course it would have the very fact Knox is performing a comedy show around her reason being famous is controversial

And again why not do the show someone that it won’t be so controversial there are plenty of other comedy festivals

The fringe is almost one of a kind so people will want to perf there

well it hadn’t been…the kerchers made it more widely known than it would ever be

ita not a comedy about MK murder - it’s about AK experience using satire to highlight very important issues that she experienced that are important for women and girls

Cagoenlaleche · 08/08/2026 20:25

It's true that it may have happened. There is just no corroboration.

I can’t think of another international one like this to compare

those cases you mention were known in Britain but unlikely to be worldwide - they all served time

one a week would be 52 a year - I’d call that rare - thank goodness

You're right, there's not one. Which is why the posters asking why she can't behave like their preferred MOJ victims haven't been able to come up with one who's been in the same position.

Cagoenlaleche · 08/08/2026 20:23

No. Just leave it alone now. Live a happy life in obscurity. Her kids would thank her.

Unfortunately, miscarriages of justice are not rare. There is at least one every week in the UK, and that is just the ones that get overturned. There will be more miscarriages that are never overturned. However, most miscarriages of justice never achieve the profile of cases such as this, the Birmingham Six, the Guildford Four, the Bridgewater Four, Andrew Malkinson and so on.

I don't think Ms Knox is a Comedian. She can call herself one, of course.

Cagoenlaleche · 08/08/2026 20:17

According to Google, the first book deal covered all the costs of the debt. It's been a while since her family or Knox have had debt. The debt was approx. 1 million and the book deal was 3.8 million dollars. There's no indication that Knox or her family are still in debt.

None of us seemed to know about it until the Kerchers publicised it

Then why use them as a comparison? In Europe the Irish people wrongly convicted of terrorism were known about for years and vilified by the UK authorities. It's possible that Americans aren't aware of it. The Birmingham Pub bombings were an atrocity that still has not been solved. We see a lot more of the victims' families on the news than those who were falsely accused.

Knox was sued for slander by the police on the basis of her accusation that she was repeatedly slapped. She won. The courts decided her accusation was true.

Yes, the police provided food. However, they also questioned her for up to 14 hours at a time with no food or water being provided during the interrogation.

There wasn't ever any conclusive ruling on whether or not she was slapped.

The authorities (illegally) refused to investigate it - meaning there could never be any evidence beyond Knox's word.

"Always picking on Amanda"? I've never spoken about her, posted about her, or anything else about her in my life apart from 3 posts on this thread.

Now that you've had an opportunity to read more accounts from attendees to the show, do you regret the following portions of your OP?

"it mocks the circumstances around the murder of Meredith Kercher and serves it up as entertainment"

"but it also belittles the issue of violence against girls and women."

Paddingtonsmarmaladesandwich2 · 08/08/2026 20:03

Rachel nickels partner wrote a letter to Colin stagg apologising for their role in believing he was guilty - so different - here’s a short quote

In his letter, Mr Hanscombe, 46, says: "I am sorry for the ordeal that you have endured during virtually the whole length off this very sad affair, and any part that I might have had personally to make it worse."

people don’t seem so upset about the men wrongly accused - what about Knox’s boyfriend?

the show seems to be trying to publicise the danger to women and girls rather than dismiss it

I always thought MK family were respectful but I feel differently now

Everyone please fact check this. I know I read that food was provided. The police were accused of slapping her, but there is no evidence of this. You can read a lot of the trial transcripts (translation tools are pretty good now). The Italian police were shockingly incompetent, but it seems unlikely they would risk violence against an American student. As we know, Knox was fully supported by the US government.

You have made the claim and so you need to provide the evidence (which I suspect you have made up).

If the argument is that people should fact check, your vague claim that it 'seems unlikely' has no place in there. You can only have one of those things, not both.

Either we don't have concrete evidence of whether she was slapped so nobody should make a call either way, or we can say things seem un/likely and not pretend that amounts to a fact check.

One movie. Other people wrote and researched them. You hardly heard from them again as they wanted to get on with their lives out of the spotlight. Lots of people are the victims of a miscarriage of justice. They don't spend their whole lives reliving it in the spotlight.

all publicity generated creates an interest something that of course benefits Edinburgh festival, there can never too too much interest …

Knox knows the Kerchers would speak out what family wouldn’t in their situation she doesn’t give a fuck, she may not have to care about them but she does care about being in the public eye and knows how to generate public interest

So why not do her comedy routine in the many other festivals around the world where it won’t be so controversial well the answer is simple it wouldn’t create the attention and that it has and this as we all know is not only shared with herself and that’s the issue it’s also about a family who have suffered enough

still a nice platform for her break into the comedy side of public speaking

None of us seemed to know about it until the Kerchers publicised it

Please, do tell, what extra revenue will the Fringe - the largest performing arts festival in the world - receive as a result of the controversy?

I'm also going to dare to venture that some people found Amanda Knox somewhat controversial already.

And, the fact remains, the media reaponse over the last 2 days was entirely driven by the Kerchers. I don't mean to condemn them (I don't think their statements were fair, but obviously they originate from severe trauma) but the notion that they unwittingly found themselves the centre of media attention - when they actively courted it for a campaign - is about as far wide of the mark as it gets.

And - again - the British press (and sections of the British public) have discussed Amanda Knox at length. Far more has been said about her than she has said on her own behalf. Even if the reason she chose the Edinbrugh Fringe is because it is in the UK (rather than it prominence and history as a performing arts festival), that would be entirely understandable and justified.

Not least given that the response from critics and audiences appears universal in that there was nothing disrespectful about the content, and the allegations made in the petition were completely wide of the mark.

The idea that the fringe is cashing in is so laughable and shows the poster doesn’t fully comprehend the setting

Unhinged!

because of a cartwheel?

Incidentally, if someone were to:

(a) try to prevent someone from exercising their freedom of speech then, having failed to do so, purported to celebrate freedom of speech;

(b) after accusing someone of murder despite a full-throated and final exoneration, pivoted their argument to "the show shouldn't be allowed because of her conviction for slander of another person - who has raised no objection to show - despite the fact that there are ongoing legal proceedings",

One might reasonably think they are posting comments in bad faith.

Happy to put it to the thread though - does anyone believe ThatJadeLion's genuine underlying concern is the conviction of slander?

I think it’s mysogeny/ internalised mysogeny, like so many of the posts on here
