AIBU to think an Edinburgh festival show about Meredith Kercher's murder should be stopped?

VivienneDelacroix · 06/08/2026 01:04

Aibu to think that this show at the Edinburgh Festival should be cancelled? It mocks the circumstances around the murder of Meredith Kercher and serves it up as entertainment.

Not only is it horribly disrespectful of Meredith's family, but it also belittles the issue of violence against girls and women.

Meredith's siblings are calling for it to be pulled from the festival. There is also a petition calling for it to be stopped.

Is there are more reliable source than a rather salacious tabloid article from the time?

There is, it is factual.

I believe the Supreme Court got it right when they determined that it is all-but impossible that she could have been involved in the murder in any material way. An extraordinary decision akin to "innocent beyond all reasonable doubt".

The prosecution theory was so absurdly deranged that it would be comical were it not for the real world consequences. It is widely considered one of the most inept investigations of modern times for a reason.

It was motivated by misogyny, Satanic-panic, a pathetic man's fragile ego, and allowed fantasy to override basic common sense and competence.

It further demonstrated the appalling misogyny of the media (particularly in the UK and Europe) and the related pitfalls of the Italian legal system: that it does not sequester it juries, encouraging the authorities to fabricate evidence and feed it to the media to get a conviction - as they did here.

For my money, when you consider the scope of it and the bodies involved, it may be the most outrageous misogynist campaign of my lifetime. Genuinely akin to a 16th century witch trial, but on a scale exponentially larger.

From that baseline, I find attempts to silence the victim to be both outrageous and dangerous and - without wanting to disclose anything about me personally - feel professionally obliged to condemn what happened to Ms Knox, and grateful to her for speaking out (particularly where she has afforded catharsis to other victimized women).

I will not have the opportunity to see her show (though I'd be interested were it local to me). I've never consumed any of her other media - I review enough actual court materials and academic commentary that I generally avoid "true crime" as a genre of entertainment. Honestly, I think the "true" crime genre is often far more problematic than Knox's show sounds to be, but that's a separate thread.

Noone has told Knox to go away and shut up. It's nearly 20 years since MK was murdered. Knox has been free for a long time. Is she going to be touring about this in her 80s? How many books and movies? It's just too much imo.

Noone has told Knox to go away and shut up.

So, what does It's just too much imo mean, if not that you think she shouldn’t go away and shut up?

I’m fascinated at how utterly convinced, to the extent that one would almost think that some of these posters were present at the night of the murder, that AK is not only wholly innocent in every respect, but that she 100% deserves to now do essentially anything and everything she darn well wants, without consideration of anything or anyone, to make up for her wrongful imprisonment.

Genuinely… I’m fascinated. Did the case really pique your interest, for example @AsHot ? Do you know anyone involved? Or is it just that you have a huge amount of time on your hands and so spend a disproportionate amount of time campaigning for her?

Oh… and any of her supporters on this thread planning on going to watch her at the festival????

Raffaele Sollecito did acknowledge having a personal passion and collection of knives and swords when questioned by authorities. During his early cautionary arrest hearings and statements to magistrates and investigators, he mentioned that he had collected knives and unsharpened katanas (swords) as a hobby since he was young. 1, 2]

YABU. She is a free woman. Regardless of what happened she has a right to tell her side of the story. Her show is fully sold out. I tried to get tickets myself as I live in Edinburgh. This is the type of show we need. I feel so sorry for her and I wish her all the best in her future. X

I listened to a podcast that explained all the evidence against her and it was clear there there wasnt any. She was an idiot in many ways, but not a murderer.

Before that, I had only really read things in the media and by Merideth's family.

What makes you think she is guilty of murder? What evidence in particular?

Incidentally, whether you believe it or not "I dont believe it could have happened because a European wouldn't hit an American" is some of the most laughable "reasoning" I have heard in my life.

11AndCounting · 09/08/2026 06:02

The allegation is evidence (witness testimony). You yourself said as much:

"The accusation of physical violence was not proven. No evidence except Knox's accusation."

Everyone agrees there is no other evidence.

We just have different opinions on whether the allegation should is likely to be true or untrue.

In your head, you think your opinion has validity, but persistently dismiss everyone else's as "just an opinion", which is extremely obnoxious.

Cagoenlaleche · 09/08/2026 05:38

11AndCounting · 09/08/2026 00:42

Ignoring for a moment that the allegation (and denials) are actually evidence....

I have been extremely clear that there is no evidence capable of proving (or disproving) the claim, and that I am offering an opinion.

What do you think your "that's just an opinion" posts add to someone offering their opinion?

Why are you misrepresenting other people's opinions as being "because she said it it must be true"?

Do you not see anything contradictory in advancing your own speculative opinions then dismissing contrary ones as "just an opinion"?

We're veering into word salad territory now. There is no evidence, just an allegation. That's just a fact.

is the opinion of many that just because Knox accused the police of hitting her it must be true
I don't think that's an honest statement of anyone's position.

My own view is that I believe the allegations on balance, because of the policy's overall conduct - human rights violations, astounding episodes of calculated dishonesty, and an illegal refusal to investigate the allegations (ensuring there could never be any evidence).

Indeed, had the police not carried out their interrogation illegally, there would be conclusive evidence, one way or another.

But there is no evidence. It's just your opinion.

I remember I just moved to the UK recently then so had no experience with British press. The press coverage was absolutely shocking. I was just stunned.

it all seemed incredibly unprofessional and none of the theories of prosecution made any sense.

Absolutely.

The British media is far more culpable than Knox when it comes to the suffering of the Kercher family and - if it did factor into the decision of Knox to perform in Edinburgh - would completely justify it.

Staggeringly, they persist in their misogynistic, sensationalist vilification to this day. A Daily Mail headline from yesterday:

Is there anything 'Foxy Knoxy' won't do for attention - or money?

The second part was obviously an opinion. As it is the opinion of many that just because Knox accused the police of hitting her it must be true.

No, the knife thing was another bullshit claim by the prosecution. There was a claim that Meredith's DNA was on a knife that was in his apartment, but during the exoneration trial, retesting found none of her DNA on the blade, just Amanda's on the handle.

STUPID POLICE MISSED MY KNIFE

A telephone call between Meredith murder suspect Raffaele Sollecito and his father revealed the 23-year-old carries a knife.

It's a money spinner. People's prurient obsession with true crime ensures it will provide a steady income stream for her.

In your post at 19.18 you asked people to fact check, then went on to say it seemed it didn't happen. Quotes below:

Everyone please fact check this...it seems unlikely they would risk violence against an American student

Either of those points would be fine on their own, but not in combination. We can stick to things we're certain about, or we can have opinions without concrete evidence and not tell other people to fact check.

The second part was obviously an opinion. As it is the opinion of many that just because Knox accused the police of hitting her it must be true.

BlackRowan · 08/08/2026 23:42

11AndCounting · 08/08/2026 23:06

The show is not about the murder.

And the "circumstances following the murder" were an extremely fantastical, misogynistic prosection that victimized a woman, and a multicontitental, misogynistic media campaign (largely all built on -gasp- a woman having premarital sex and owning a vibrator , thus rendering her a satanic she-devil).

The vast majority of wrongful prosecutions will, naturally, follow a crime. One's that result in years behind bars and an international media furore will, naturally, arise from serious crimes.

The scale and extent of the misogyny that Knox suffered should never be forgotten - particularly due to the role of the international (and particularly, the British press).

Because the jury was not sequestered, they were able to consume all of the misogynistic reporting - and the prosecution further leveraged this by leaking unverified or outright false claims to the media, meticulously timed to build a public narrative of Knox as a manipulative, hyper-sexualized sociopath.

One of the often overlooked police strategies I think we would do well to remember - the police falsely told Knox that she had HIV (causing severe distress) in order to trick her into making a list of all of her past sexual partners (7, in total) which was then leaked to the media so that they could readily depict her as a sex-crazed man-eater. Something the British press gleefully participated in.

What happened to her is jaw-dropping, and genuinely reminiscent of 16th century witch trial, but on a scale that was larger by orders of magnitude.

As to comedy as the vehicle - well, for one its apparently less a comedy show and more a combination of her life story and a treatise against the patriarchy and its dangers, coupled with some gallows humor at her own expense (including her apparent "unlikeability").

As posted earlier in the thread, the show was particularly celebrated by Denise Huskins - a survivor of kidnapping, rape, false police allegations and widespread media misogyny. To repeat a passage:

"I just saw that there is a petition to cancel her set at the festival, and it deeply disturbs me that people continue to vilify someone who has overcome so much and who has been proven innocent over and over again.

Her show is a beautiful representation of comedy meeting tragedy; displaying a philosophical and intellectual real-life description of how trauma follows us despite our determination to create a purpose and meaning with our lives beyond it."

Bearing in mind that nobody who has actually seen the show seems to share anything close to your opinion - that it "belittles the issue of violence against girls and women" - do you have any regret in making this allegation against this particular survivor?

Can you explain in what particular, harmful ways you feel that the show "mocks the circumstances around the murder of Meredith Kercher"? Based on the actual content of the show rather that your assumptions, please.

In your professional role, do you coach victims of the patriarchy on the "proper and permissable" ways in which they may process their trauma, and try to ensure they don't have access to vehicles for doing so that you deem to be ill-advised?

And on what basis have you determined her performance is "probably not doing much for Knox's own emotional health either" - particularly as someone with no apparent familiarity with the actual contents of the show and presumably does not know Knox?

Do you find there to be anything ironic about, absent relevant fact (i.e. the content of the show) rushing to judgment to condem Amanda Knox of all people?

I remember I just moved to the UK recently then so had no experience with British press. The press coverage was absolutely shocking. I was just stunned.

it all seemed incredibly unprofessional and none of the theories of prosecution made any sense.

Which frivolous and false claims have I made?

I don't think the circumstances behind a woman's murder (including the circumstances following her murder) should be fair game for a comedy show, not when it pours more pain onto the family.

I fully support women speaking out, but I think this particular vehicle is ill-advised, is hurting people, and it's probably not doing much for Knox's own emotional health either.

This second paragraph IS a false claim

because the show is NOT ABOUT THE MURDER
