Mum’s friend called me to lecture me, shame me and tell me off? And telling me what to do?

to think my mum’s acquaintance seriously overstepped boundaries?

This woman is not a close friend of my mums. She is someone my mom sees for coffee couple times a year and/or chats to on phone once every 5 months. (or more like she talks for hours while my mum listens and never lets mum get a word in)

I saw this woman maybe 6 times in my life.

This is a family matter. About health/medical decisions/finances. a decision was made.

She overheard this topic from my brother who was on the phone, and twice I saw her asked me questions, have we considered X? and said you know if we made different decision and did X then we’d have X. saying it would be better for us.

As if kindly offering advice/suggestion.

I know I should have told her its private, but I just didn’t say anything/replied something vague like “we have other plans”, “we are not planning to do that” and changed topic. hoping she’ll get the hint I don’t want to discuss this.

(I later found out she bothered other relatives including my mum more often about this too)

plus she’s older, i thought she meant well and I didn’t want to be rude.

One night I saw her she began nodding her head disapprovingly. Then says “nope, nope, nope. You know what, it’s none of my business” and walked out the door. Before I had a chance to say anything.

then, she suddenly calls on video chat out of nowhere and begins telling me off and shaming me, as if i am her 5 year old child.

I honestly felt like a toddler being told off.

using these sentences:

“You refuse to listen to me!” (wtf!)

”why do I waste my time with you, you refuse to listen anyway”

“Look at you, living like this!”

“You like living like this don’t you!”

“I told you already, do this!”

“Your poor mother”!

”I keep telling you and you refuse to listen!”

”have you no shame!”

She then began telling me what I should do with my money/savings.

“I told you already, Get rid of them!” “Move them there”

Pointing finger at me.

I was just so shocked I didn’t say a word, her face freaked me out too. She’s always overly sweet smiling with overtly sweet voice when I see her

but her face and voice was all angry and aggressive.

literally no exaggeration like pic posted.

I froze up and listened to her rant at me for like 5 minutes, then said I have to go. Now I’m just sitting here confused

I know it’s my fault for not telling her it’s private business before, but surely that’s something you don’t call someone who is not even a close friend and tell them what to do and tell them off?

I’m also confused why she’s so invested in this

At the risk of sounding incredibly common, does nobody tell anyone to just fuck off any more?
Like a short, sharp "oh Maureen luv this has nothing to do with you, now fuck off will ya"
or if the F word isn't your thing replace it with sod.

Sounds like she is going mad to me. She shouldn't have spoken to you like that don't have anything to do with her in future. Wondering what your Mum thinks about her behaviour

KrazyKatty · 05/08/2026 20:37

Why are you even entertaining this woman?

To be honest, this is something I’m trying to teach my 17yr old DS as he’s terribly polite and struggles to react when dealing with rude and obnoxious people. I keep reminding him that he doesn’t owe rude people any of his time and attention.

Practise saying “fuck off Janice, it’s got nothing to do with you” in the mirror several times a day. Then next time she phones, you can repeat the phrase, disconnect the call and block her. 🤷🏻‍♀️

EmpressStorm · 05/08/2026 20:36

It’s really hard to judge this, yes she’s over stepped, but it’s hard to understand why she’s so upset about your living situation

BashtheBishop · 05/08/2026 20:36

Message her saying "Having had time to reflect on your bizarre rant earlier, I feel it is best if you do not contact me or my family again. Your number has been blocked."

44PumpLane · 05/08/2026 20:32

The beauty of people ringing you is that you can simply hang up on them ....remember that if it happens again as she sounds unhinged!

fridgegrazer · 05/08/2026 20:22

Sorry if I have missed this, but have you mentioned this conversation to your mum?

Yes I spoke to my mum.

shes very confused too.

She said she would always tell her when the friend made suggestions/advice

“we are not planning to do that”

She is right that it’s none of her business and you’re right that she’s overstepped but to be honest your post is so vague as to be hard to understand whether she’s pushed herself in because there’s some glaring issue that you’re not addressing and that’s upsetting your mum.

Either way, all you have to do is tell her “Janice, keep out of it” and block her.

I feel like if there was a glaring issue that’s upsetting my mum, my mum could speak to me herself. (And she does always tell me when she’s unhappy). Not have some random woman speak for her.

It was a decision we made including my mum and my mum did tell her did when she asked “we have no plans to do that” so it’s definitely not that.

i actually just spoke to my mum and my mum is very confused what that woman is on about

Block her on everything.
Problem solved.
Also you know you can just hang up the phone. You don't have to put up with this.
"This is a private matter and nothing to do with you. Bye". Hang up. Block.

SparklyBrickViper · 05/08/2026 20:07

Block - you can block numbers on your phone.

I you see her - “this is nothing to do with you”.

No real need for drama.

Meganandbaby · 05/08/2026 20:04

caspa2 · 05/08/2026 20:02

This is so vague that it’s hard to comment. For all we know you might be about to cart your mum off to Dignatas against your mum’s wishes. If it’s something on that level then as a concerned friend she’s absolutely right to speak up.

Too little detail to comment!

lol

but no believe me, it’s nothing like that

It was a family decision we made as family, including my mum and dad.

LIZS · 05/08/2026 20:03

Why are you accepting her calls? Just block her.

OP was this about obesity?

BMW58 · 05/08/2026 20:00

I'd send her a WhatsApp message and absolutely let rip at her!

MyOliveStork · 05/08/2026 19:11

How old is she? Could this be dementia? This can cause people to speak out of turn/inappropriately. Have you spoken to your Mum about this?

I was about to suggest this. With dementia can come obsessive behaviour surround one person, object or situation, coupled with the dropping of social filters and a complete lack of empathy for others' feelings or opinions. It's not the person's fault, but the illness. It does sound to me like this; or something similar.

AS @SevenYellowHammers says - take screenshots of the messages in case they are needed. Then block her - she will not let this lie, quite clearly, and it will increase in intensity. Block her on all channels and do not engage further with her. If you know of any family she has, you might consider letting them know about the behaviour and that you are concerned for her wellbeing but, beyond that, let this be the last time that she has an opportunity to distress you. x

Alycie · 05/08/2026 19:55

There are mentally ill people out and about, and you’d never guess unless they got fixated with you or with your issues. This could very well be the case. YANBU. Just block her.

She sounds like she has a disorder or something. I would have absolutely no contact with her at all. If she persists then it becomes harrassment.

ThirdStorm · 05/08/2026 19:53

I’d text her and tell her to never to contact you again. Then block. I’d tell your mum what happened and say you won’t have contact with her again ever. Batshit.

godmum56 · 05/08/2026 19:33

irrelevant. Block block block

Just wondering, because there's no information

My parents got one who would probably do this to me, but I blocked her ages ago she's mad, but you tend to hope that there isn't a lot of of them around

she was really rude to me about some personal stuff and another one told me off when I gain weight I just blocked these people straight away

LejlaKapovic · 05/08/2026 19:49

Just hang up on her the next time - or better yet, block her number. And when you see her on the street, say you have to run and then run.

I wouldn't have patience for this woman and her weird obsession with my life choices, lol.

justasking111 · 05/08/2026 19:47

A woman who I had never met or spoken to knew my mother. At mums funeral she approached my DH berating my siblings and I for being terrible children. DH just replied "Not the time, not the place" and walked off.

We followed mum's instructions for her funeral to the letter. She didn't want a wake her money going to various charities meant a lot to her. So thankfully we didn't get a repeat performance.

@Meganandbaby so don't worry about one unpleasant person, block them and continue with your family decisions.

OriginalUsername2 · 05/08/2026 19:43

She’s clearly not right in the head! My mum who I’m NC with got like that too, finger pointing and angry face. Jarring.

Elsvieta · 05/08/2026 19:41
