Well, my story is pretty scandalous. I’m from Indian heritage … a cousin I had not seen for years invited by my family to my wedding - she wore her bloody wedding outfit her glam reception - red outfit - all her freaking jewellery I mean Wtaf and I’m still not over it and it’s been 17 years

Re the red thing, when I was a kid there was a rhyme about colours and red was marry in red, wish you ere dead.

Married in white, you will have chosen all right.
Married in grey, you will go far away.
Married in black, you will wish yourself back.
Married in red, you’ll wish yourself dead.
Married in blue, you will always be true.
Married in pearl, you’ll live in a whirl.
Married in green, ashamed to be seen.
Married in yellow, ashamed of the fellow.
Married in brown, you’ll live out of town.
Married in pink, your spirits will sink.

The "red means you've slept with the groom" meme is a tiktok invention from the last few years. Posters who are telling this tale are making it up.

No I’m in my 40’s and this was definitely a thing my mum used to say! Nothing to do with TikTok

My brother shagged a male friend who he’d never met before in the toilets at my wedding, then got engaged to his long term girlfriend a week later!

I know that wearing black is frowned upon although dh's cousin had her bridesmaids in black dresses.
But red and green too ? Never heard of that and the reasons. Bonkers.

That brides family are crazy. having cherries on your dress meant you lost your virginity to him ? Total batshit.

Are this couple still together ? If they are poor man having in-laws like that.

The bride (my friend) found the whole thing hilarious, I was very confused and thought I’d breached some kind of universal wedding etiquette as they were so sure of themselves in a “everybody knows this!” kind of way.

They were still together last I heard but tbh have lost touch since having kids.

Best man made a very very racy and extremely explicit speech and the brides dad lamped him mid way through. I was about 7/8, so I didn’t really understand most of it, and my dad put his hands over my ears after the first few jokes - but looking back 29 years later… best man deserved it. Rest of the night carried on though which was weird, the rest of it was a pretty standard (if a bit chavy) wedding. Also no hate to chavy weddings - I had one myself and from what I recall it was a hoot.

Oh and someone got headbutted at my wedding but it was after we left and it was a fight between two plus ones… don’t have plus ones I guess.

What makes a wedding chavvy?

Definitely not from the last few years, this is something I’ve heard years and years ago!!

Yea I seem to remember it meant “spurned women” but that was wearing all red. Having a splash of red on the dress is fine.

Lentilcakes · 06/08/2026 07:52

@MysteryParcelthat is awful, poor bride and groom 😔

Lentilcakes · 06/08/2026 07:49

Not scandalous but I passed out at my friend’s wedding lunch! It was a small wedding so everyone saw - the kids (inc mine) were playing in the back of the venue and someone stood at the door barring them from coming back in (I could see them when I came to). My then 8 yr old DS apparently thought I’d died.
Once I’d come to properly I was fine and just carried on w my dessert (I was a bit if a fainter anyway and had a really bad stomach ache that preceded the faint so I knew it was coming).

Oh dear
There's always one isn't there 🙄🙄🙄

That's a bit harsh - only reason I knew red is the Indian bridal colour is a previous mn thread. OP said she was Indian and in a shop that does Indian bridal gear and there was a white British woman in who was marrying an Indian man - she had a bunch of white British female friends with her who were all going to dress Indian style for the wedding - and they were picking out bridal dresses. OP tried to tell them which ones were just for brides but they wouldn't have it, potential bride included, and even the owner of the place was shushing her because he stood to make more money. She tried to explain it would be like going to a church wedding dressed like the bride in a big white dress but the bride got quite hostile and they told her to mind her own business etc. Just focused on what they happened to like the look of and refusing to think about any cultural aspects etc. OP had to just give up and accept this daft woman was basically going to insult her new husband's whole family.

I was at a wedding where one of the guests decided to do a few lines of coke right before dinner could start (to suppress her appetite apparently) and ended up collapsing right in front of the open buffet; supposedly the coke was laced with something which caused her to have a seizure.

Out of propriety, we were all asked to leave the hall while she received first aid and they waited for the ambulance to arrive but by the time the paramedics got there, stabilised her and got her into the ambulance over an hour had already passed. Then because she had released 3 different types of bodily fluids all over the place, the venue had to do a proper deep clean so it was nearly 2 hours before the hall could be reopened and by that time everyone had left / wandered off into the city centre in search of food as we were all really hungry (word had got back that the buffet was a write off) so that was basically the end of the wedding reception. As the buffet had just been put out when she collapsed right in front of it, the food had to be thrown away due to the risk of contamination from airborne particles so not only did the bride and groom lose all that food / money and miss out on their reception, but they also lost money on a DJ who never got to play, favours that never got given out, a photobooth that went unused and they also had to pay out to meet the minimum payment for the bar. Then the cherry on top of the non cut wedding cake was that they also got given a hefty clean up fee from the venue as well!

DH was talked into his first marriage (at the age of 40... he was basically told if he didn't get married now he never would and 'nothing is perfect'). They separated on the honeymoon and divorced as soon as they could. His first marriage, her 4th. It just was never going to be a good idea. Both perfectly nice people, but not suited to each other.

I just recalled a best man speech which included the immortal words 'A woman is like a frying pan... you have to warm her up before sticking the fat in'. Our best man suggested that men like women, but women prefer children and hamsters. Not quite sure why.

"Men love women, women love children and children love hamsters" - Alice Thomas Ellis

RedRosie · 06/08/2026 07:40

I was once at a wedding where a guest turned up in her own wedding dress. It was kind of not funny though, as she clearly had MH issues related to a marriage that had failed. People were very nice about it and I don't think anyone said anything. It was an accepting group of friends.

8misskitty8 · 06/08/2026 07:37

One of my friends went to a wedding where the bride wanted all the men in kilts to dance to 'you can leave your hat on' from the full monty then lift their kilts to show their willy's. Friends DH declined and she was furious.

EasilyRemedied · 06/08/2026 07:32

@greenbean80 thanks for this thread! I love it.

I wasn’t there, but a lot of my friends were at a huge and very fancy wedding many years ago. All of them agreed it was the absolute best wedding they’d ever been to. They had an amazing time.
Bride and groom split the very next day. Groom admitted that he hadn’t wanted to go through with it, but didn’t want to ruin the day. 🙊

KarcherK5 · 05/08/2026 20:05

I was once accidentally the scandalous guest.

In my early twenties I went to my first wedding and wore a 50s style black dress covered in little pictures of red cherries with green leaves. Wore it with red accessories and thought I looked very cool and retro.

Found out on the day that the bride’s family was very traditional, and strongly believed that wearing black to a wedding meant that you were mourning it, wearing red meant you’d previously slept with the groom, and wearing green meant that you were envious of the wedding.

Add to that the fact that I wore pictures of cherries (and cherry earrings) and they concluded that I’d lost my virginity to the groom, wished I was marrying him, and had chosen to publicly announce these facts through my outfit.

I have been very careful with wedding guest outfits since then!

Bride shagging her affair partner in the toilets while groom was waiting on the dance floor for the first dance. AP was one of the grooms good friends.Marriage lasted 3 months. Relationship with AP lasted 7 years until he cheated on her with somebody 10 years younger.

Jardenalia · 06/08/2026 07:30

The groom’s mother found out at the reception that the best man was shagging her husband, the groom’s father. The bride announced that she and the groom had split up weeks ago but decided to go ahead with the wedding as they liked a party. Same wedding. Horrible.

At my cousin's wedding (she was the bride) the groom got really drunk and flirted with all the cousins, told the bride's uncles he'd made a mistake, snogged the bridesmaid on the dance floor and threw up on the dj.

Did the marriage last?

There’s are at least two threads on MN which are over 15 years old and a good 7-8 years before TikTok was launched, referencing that red means you’re the mistress/slept with the groom.

My maid of honour shagged dh’s friend on the sofa of the holiday cottage she was staying in with my family. My mum, stepdad, an aunt and an old family friend (who is a vicar 😂) all got a cottage together for the weekend and as my MOH had to travel from abroad, we made sure she had a room with them so she didn’t have to pay for her accommodation.

The hilarious thing is that it was like 15 minutes by taxi from the venue. So there must have been a point when my mum was like, oh Harry, go on then, you’re coming back with us! And then they must have all sat happily chatting in the taxi knowing that MOH of bringing some guy they’d never met back for a shag. And then they must have all gone to bed to give them their privacy.

When it started getting hot and heavy, my 70 year old auntie threw a condom down to them. She was leaving from our wedding to go to Heathrow for several weeks of solo travel around Europe. She clearly came prepared for the kind of travel fun she was hoping she’d have during 3 weeks of interrailing. 🤣

I love your family. Just saying.

Lugol · 06/08/2026 07:25

Some old friends of my parents, the mother is an absolute narc.

Her eldest daughter got married, the mother wore her own white wedding dress on the day of her daughter's wedding.
People weren't sure who the bride was because it was so fucking weird.
The daughter was really upset but trying to put a brave face on it.
The mother was beaming in the photos and made a huge deal out of the fact she could still fit into her wedding dress.

She couldn't even let her own daughter have her wedding day.

I don't have any properly scandalous ones which is surprising as I'm Irish and I've probably been to 30 or 40 big chaotic weddings.

There was once an odd scenario where a wedding guest wore a full length white lace fishtaiil dress. It was made more confusing by the fact she was similar in appearance to the bride - who didn't seem bothered at all.

Another time I went to my cousin's wedding and was introduced to his friends, all presumably single based on their interest in me and the other cousins. In the bar one fairly handsome charming guy and I hit it off, I gave him my phone number and agreed to a dinner date. My other cousin (best man) appeared, sat down and glared at him till he departed. I was confused and even more so when a very timid looking young woman appeared and sat down looking at me forlornly. My cousin snapped "he's not here". Without a word she stood up and walked off smiling apologetically at me. She was of course his wife. All very odd.

I asked my cousin about it and he was filling me in that the guy is blatant in his bad behaviour and the wife just calmly accepts it's, it's really sad. I was shocked and hanging on his every word. Myself and this cousin are very close and we ended up roaring laughing as we kept talking about various other stuff.

Imagine my surprise when I turned to find yet another silent woman seated at our table but this one looked furious. She stared at us both, me then him then me again. Finally she spoke "so who is this?" My cousin shook his head and told her to get a grip explaining how we were related. She turned out to be the sister of someone he had recently dated.

I couldn't help it, I started to laugh. This made her absolutely incandescent. Before I knew it herself and three of her mates were hurling abuse at me, I was flirting with their friends husband, I was flirting with my own cousin, I was disgusting.

I decided it was time for bed and fled.

The next morning at breakfast it was smiles and hellos all round like it never happened.

Not me, but years ago, someone I knew was telling me about their own wedding. Families had never met before. Turned out that brides dad had had an affair with grooms mum. Bride married her half brother. They now have two children with severe special needs.

My jaw dropped when I read this. How sad.
