Well, my story is pretty scandalous. I’m from Indian heritage … a cousin I had not seen for years invited by my family to my wedding - she wore her bloody wedding outfit her glam reception - red outfit - all her freaking jewellery I mean Wtaf and I’m still not over it and it’s been 17 years

I am in my fifties and have always known this so this isn't something new. It is considered a bold all over colour and not really suitable for a wedding according to Debrett's. They have been publishing their guide to etiquette and listing nobility and gentry in the UK since 1769.

My PIL had it in their house and it was a very interesting read and I could see where a lot of their opinions had come from when it came to our wedding choices.

My copy of Debrett’s Etiquette and Modern Manners says absolutely nothing about colours for wedding guests.

It makes three comments under the heading “Women guests”:

dresses and hats for summer weddings are often more elaborate than at other times of the year as the season lends itself to soft, light, materials and exotic colours;

fur coats or similar warm garments are worn in the winter over dresses or coats and skirts;

hats are invariably worn at weddings together with jewellery, gloves and other smart accessories.

That’s from the 1982 edition and obviously sounds very dated, because of the reference to fur coats and gloves. But it’s interesting that there is no reference at all to colour, even black and white.

A member of the bridal party who did not know anyone on the groom's side had a glass of wine thrown over her for no apparent reason.

Well, it turns out that earlier in the evening she'd snogged a man who turned out to be the father of the groom and the woman who threw the wine was his wife!

A big fight ensued with people stepping in to break it up.

We didn't discover the full story until days later.

BlueberryStar · 06/08/2026 11:18

I went to an wedding which was nice on the day but the father of the bride ended up hiring an private investigator as the bride grew suspicious of her husband. It turned out the groom was already married with kids.

You didn't get married in the 80s in Hertfordshre by any chance?

We had this when we went to a uni friend's wedding. A group of us were invited to the ceremony and evening reception but not the sit down meal.

One of the group decided that wasn't on and she and her boyfriend crashed the sit down reception. She had already been told off for lighting up a cigarette in church.

No that wasn't us. Seems there are more of these greedy chancers around than you would hope!

I wasn’t a guest but I used work in a function room that held wedding receptions. I’m from a northern town and it wasn’t the most upmarket of places.

At one reception we had young kids rapping obscenities on the karaoke and literally trying to climb on the bar to buy/grab red bull while there parents got drunk and started shouting at each other. Was a sight to behold.

I was at a wedding where one of the guests decided to do a few lines of coke right before dinner could start (to suppress her appetite apparently) and ended up collapsing right in front of the open buffet; supposedly the coke was laced with something which caused her to have a seizure.

Out of propriety, we were all asked to leave the hall while she received first aid and they waited for the ambulance to arrive but by the time the paramedics got there, stabilised her and got her into the ambulance over an hour had already passed. Then because she had released 3 different types of bodily fluids all over the place, the venue had to do a proper deep clean so it was nearly 2 hours before the hall could be reopened and by that time everyone had left / wandered off into the city centre in search of food as we were all really hungry (word had got back that the buffet was a write off) so that was basically the end of the wedding reception. As the buffet had just been put out when she collapsed right in front of it, the food had to be thrown away due to the risk of contamination from airborne particles so not only did the bride and groom lose all that food / money and miss out on their reception, but they also lost money on a DJ who never got to play, favours that never got given out, a photobooth that went unused and they also had to pay out to meet the minimum payment for the bar. Then the cherry on top of the non cut wedding cake was that they also got given a hefty clean up fee from the venue as well!

Oh Lord this is awful! I feel so sorry for them! What happened afterwards?

Toooldforlonghair · 06/08/2026 10:46

I went to a wedding of a distant cousin that ended in a massive fist fight, not sure of the ins and outs (I was a teenager at the time) but my last view of the groom was with broken glasses and blood streaming down his face!

We had two people turn up to the sit down reception who had not been invited, nor catered for nor on the seating plan. They shoved themselves onto a table and ate and drank plenty. Bless them :(
I also heard my cousin ask a member of the wait staff if he 'wanted to come outside and say that mate '

I was once accidentally the scandalous guest.

In my early twenties I went to my first wedding and wore a 50s style black dress covered in little pictures of red cherries with green leaves. Wore it with red accessories and thought I looked very cool and retro.

Found out on the day that the bride’s family was very traditional, and strongly believed that wearing black to a wedding meant that you were mourning it, wearing red meant you’d previously slept with the groom, and wearing green meant that you were envious of the wedding.

Add to that the fact that I wore pictures of cherries (and cherry earrings) and they concluded that I’d lost my virginity to the groom, wished I was marrying him, and had chosen to publicly announce these facts through my outfit.

I have been very careful with wedding guest outfits since then!

People like that love a good moan. You probably made their year.

I've worn a lot of black and white to weddings, a monochrome Jane Norman polka dot dress was my default for weddings when I was 25 and a size 6/8.

I dont understand why people do this.

Had a similar issue with my own wedding (me) and my cousins wedding (her groom), although nowhere near as dramatic. One party clearly doesnt want to get married and others force/talk them into it, and inevitably the marriage doesnt last long!

In my case, I had a baby at 17 and my mother was "shamed" by that (this was 1990 not 1950!) and when my boyfriend of 6 months who was jealous and possessive and controlling, wanted to get married my mother decided that this would make me "respectable". I dont consider it my first marriage as I basically had no choice, I didnt do it, it was done to me. We lasted 2 and a half years from first date to divorce......what a surprise! My sister spent the whole night before talking me into it (she was 22, now at 50+ she says that she regrets that).

If someone is running away the worst thing you can do is talk them into marrying someone they dont want to marry! If only for the sake of the poor sod they will be marrying. Short term its awful but long term its better for everyone.

It happened to me. I didn’t literally run but I did tell everyone I didn’t want to go through with it. Everyone piled on to talk me out of cancelling. I blame myself as I allowed that to happen. Was so unhappy inside during the day. Left after three years and lots of antidepressants.

At a Reception in a marquee (well, big gazebo) in a back garden in Ilford a neighbour was invited. He started chatting people up and inviting them to his house. Eventually about 4 women were in his house two doors down having group sex. One of them came back over the garden fence and urged me to join them (I didn't). They were all climbing through the gardens all afternoon.

One of them had an autistic son who was distressed because he couldn't find his Mum and badly bashed another kid on the head. Everyone was saying 'where's his Mum?' and I had to explain she was away having sex with the guy from 2 doors down, Then she came back and the mother of injured child attacked her.

This is the stuff we came here for.

purplecorkheart · 06/08/2026 10:27

I was at a wedding where I was the plus one of a workmate of the Bride. Bride arrived at the church. No sign of the groom, his parents or his best man. Eventually groom arrived so drunk he had to be held up by parents and Best Man at the alter. Bride walked up the aisle. All parties were called into a side room. Priest refused to do the marriage, he said the groom was so drunk he could not make meaningful vows or sign the register. You can imagine how that went down with the Bride's family.

Other wedding was a neighbors daughter. Our table was seated very near the head table and we noticed that the Bride was missing. We assumed that she had gone to the Bathroom. As our table was on the dance floor they asked us to move while they set up the dance floor. A few of us decided that we would go for a bit of air in the beautiful hotel grounds - the father of the Bride joined us. Walked out and followed the path into the garden where we were greeted by the Bride having sex with the wedding photographer. That marriage did not last and she is on her 4th marriage. Oddly I did not got to the following three.

Omg!

I’m amazed that a man managed to get 4 women to do this.

was he incredibly handsome / charming?

I just can’t envision women ever doing that.

Not me, but years ago, someone I knew was telling me about their own wedding. Families had never met before. Turned out that brides dad had had an affair with grooms mum. Bride married her half brother. They now have two children with severe special needs.

Omg 😨 wtf?!

Wokeuptired · 06/08/2026 10:12

Wasn't a scandal at the time as only a few of the men who were on the stag do knew what the reference was, but at my best friends wedding the best man who was the grooms brother gave a lovely speech then toasted the bridesmaids and the bride then made a toast to "miss America" a few people laughed mainly because we didn't get the joke.
My best friend found out recently that miss America was the prostitute her soon to be ex husband slept with on his stag do.

katseyes7 · 06/08/2026 10:07

Not really scandalous, but....
My dad's (much, by about 20+ years) older sister was invited to her granddaughter's husband's sister's wedding evening 'do'.
She'd met some of that side of the family, but not the bridegroom, before.
Apparently the groom wasn't, in her view, a 'looker', and she was heard to comment, when observing him with his pregnant bride, "Dear me, it must have been dark the night she went with him...."

Also, my Northern Irish father in law told me about a family wedding he'd been at years ago when the bottom tier of the wedding cake was hurled across the room, came to rest on a wall light, then slowly made it's merry way down to the carpet.
And nobody turned a hair.

Groom and his best man (also his brother) doing coke in the loos. Groom drags him by his feet onto the dance floor at 9pm. He's in full cardiac arrest screaming for help. Bride is doing cpr. Us bridesmaids try to get all the little kids outside. Ambulance arrives. Blue lights him to hospital. He died. All grooms family leaves the wedding. Police arrive. Shut off the music and place themselves outside the loos. Groom at a table crying. Bride still trying to save her wedding and dance in silence....

Wha?!? 😱 The groom's brother and beat man died during the wedding?! Omg!! 😨

This happened to a man in our village - not at a wedding though, just at home on a weekday evening. Turns out coke is a really effective way of finding out if you’ve got an unknown-about heart condition…

One of my friends went to a wedding where the bride wanted all the men in kilts to dance to 'you can leave your hat on' from the full monty then lift their kilts to show their willy's. Friends DH declined and she was furious.

I was at a friends wedding and she was marrying a Scot. They did something similar at the reception to "Donald Where's Your Troosers" but the punchline was when the kilts were lifted up they all had on joke underwear of an elephant's head, with the trunk sticking out of it.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 06/08/2026 09:42

At a friend's wedding the brides mum left during the wedding meal with the photographer. She got up from the top table and was never seen again.

it transpired that she had been having an affair with the photographer (a family friend) for some time and decided to leave her husband for him during her daughters reception.

This was decades ago. The bride never spoke to her mum again and the mum never met her three lovely grandchildren. I hope the photographer was worth it.

I'm confused. Is there something wrong with wearing a red dress and jewelry to a wedding?

It’s the equivalent of turning up to a Western wedding in a strapless white number and a veil and carrying a bouquet.

thecatsthecats · 06/08/2026 09:33

Come to think of it there was a second lucky escape at my wedding.

My school friend group had split in two a few years back after a big fall out between a few of them, I stayed friends with both sides. They had just about reached the stage of being civil at my wedding.

During dinner, just before the speeches, my husband was going around the tables, when one of my friends from one side of the fallout told him that I had been fingered at a party by the fiance of a friend from the other side of the fallout when we were teens!

Not only did this NEVER happen (we didn't even attend the same parties), if the other friend had heard of it, she would have kicked off big time. My husband only brought it up with me once all the guests had left.

My exH’s friend’s girlfriend wore a white lace, off the shoulder midi dress to my wedding. No other colours on it- just white- with a white flower in her hair.

It was only the second time I’d met her.

Yeah, a supposedly good friend of mine (since high school) wore something similar (not off the shoulder but cream lace). I was really pissed off with her but to this day she doesn't know I was upset....maybe one day I should tell her?
