Well, my story is pretty scandalous. I’m from Indian heritage … a cousin I had not seen for years invited by my family to my wedding - she wore her bloody wedding outfit her glam reception - red outfit - all her freaking jewellery I mean Wtaf and I’m still not over it and it’s been 17 years

I was once accidentally the scandalous guest.

In my early twenties I went to my first wedding and wore a 50s style black dress covered in little pictures of red cherries with green leaves. Wore it with red accessories and thought I looked very cool and retro.

Found out on the day that the bride’s family was very traditional, and strongly believed that wearing black to a wedding meant that you were mourning it, wearing red meant you’d previously slept with the groom, and wearing green meant that you were envious of the wedding.

Add to that the fact that I wore pictures of cherries (and cherry earrings) and they concluded that I’d lost my virginity to the groom, wished I was marrying him, and had chosen to publicly announce these facts through my outfit.

I have been very careful with wedding guest outfits since then!

That was certainly what they call a “statement outfit” 🤣🤣

who knew one simple (and lovely sounding) dress could say so much!

all internet myths and not recognised wedding customs whatsoever.

Justttheone · 06/08/2026 13:57

My SIL wore a white dress to my wedding but I didn't care as I'm not very traditional - I was wearing a multicoloured dress. She didn't know what I'd be wearing though so looking back through the lens of Mumsnet it was an odd choice.

Tangomango1 · 06/08/2026 13:51

I am 57 & I have always been ‘brainwashed’ into knowing to never wear white to a wedding, as The Bride should be the star on the day. Black is for mourning & Red is for ‘Scarlet Women’ 😂 Keeping us women, in their place as usual!! It’s ridiculous & definitely not a Tik Tok craze 🙄

Gwenhwyfar · 06/08/2026 13:48

"I dont understand why people do this."

I think being jilted at the altar is probably the worst humiliation a person can go through. If you've made it that, far I think it might be better to go through with it and get an annulment quickly afterwards. All the costs of the wedding will still have to be paid either way.

Don't worry about it. There's always some prick ready to have a go for wearing all colours, styles, fabrics and lengths. There's also green is bad luck, pale colours or bright colours is trying to look like a bridesmaid, long is trying to be the bride, short is trying to be more attractive, trousers is insulting for not being feminine, blue is claiming you're the good luck, yellow is jealousy, orange is attention seeking, brown is being shitty, silk/lace/satin is bridal/trying to cop off with the groom, cotton is showing it's not important, velvet is trying to be royal, being too pretty/smart/formal/informal, etc, etc, etc.

As long as it's not a Berketex crinoline with a bouquet and net curtain pinned to the top of the head or full on latex gimp costume, bollocks to the lot of them.

Groom and his best man (also his brother) doing coke in the loos. Groom drags him by his feet onto the dance floor at 9pm. He's in full cardiac arrest screaming for help. Bride is doing cpr. Us bridesmaids try to get all the little kids outside. Ambulance arrives. Blue lights him to hospital. He died. All grooms family leaves the wedding. Police arrive. Shut off the music and place themselves outside the loos. Groom at a table crying. Bride still trying to save her wedding and dance in silence....

HOLY SHITBALLS!

inickedthisname · 06/08/2026 13:41

The thing about red in western weddings is just nuts. Surely the assumption would be that the woman wearing red wouldn’t know about this strange rule otherwise who would be advertising that they’ve slept with the groom?

greenbean80 · 06/08/2026 13:29

Justttheone · 06/08/2026 12:18

Father of the bride shagged a close friend of the bride in the bushes outside whilst the mother of the bridge wandered around inside looking for him.

How can people do this shit?

Oh goodness this is so sad to read, I hear it’s common for long lost siblings to find each other attractive. This is of course a sad situation in that they weren’t to know :(

They weren’t to know but their parents were! If ever there’s a time to speak out at the just cause or impediment bit, this is it.

I was at a wedding where one of the guests decided to do a few lines of coke right before dinner could start (to suppress her appetite apparently) and ended up collapsing right in front of the open buffet; supposedly the coke was laced with something which caused her to have a seizure.

Out of propriety, we were all asked to leave the hall while she received first aid and they waited for the ambulance to arrive but by the time the paramedics got there, stabilised her and got her into the ambulance over an hour had already passed. Then because she had released 3 different types of bodily fluids all over the place, the venue had to do a proper deep clean so it was nearly 2 hours before the hall could be reopened and by that time everyone had left / wandered off into the city centre in search of food as we were all really hungry (word had got back that the buffet was a write off) so that was basically the end of the wedding reception. As the buffet had just been put out when she collapsed right in front of it, the food had to be thrown away due to the risk of contamination from airborne particles so not only did the bride and groom lose all that food / money and miss out on their reception, but they also lost money on a DJ who never got to play, favours that never got given out, a photobooth that went unused and they also had to pay out to meet the minimum payment for the bar. Then the cherry on top of the non cut wedding cake was that they also got given a hefty clean up fee from the venue as well!

Jeez, the poor bride and groom. They should have sued the junkie for the costs.

University friends of dh. Groom had been with same woman (Cathy) throughout uni, but broken up the year after. I met dh just after. G Meets and subsequently marries bride (Becca).Mates group not keen on her but are civil. Who apparently is the spit of gf1. All of the mates are telling themselves "Don't call her Cathy"We get through service; photos, reception Phew. Then bride is stood chatting to the women in our group and foot in mouth me goes "It's been a lovely day, you look gorgeous Cathy" Silence descends. "I Expected it of them(dismissive wave to mates)but you never even met the fucking woman" and swept off. I felt terrible, but they felt I'd lifted the curse and relaxed. Marriage didn't last.

😂

I actually think it was red! 🤣🤣🤣

EvieBB · 06/08/2026 09:26

Yeah, a supposedly good friend of mine (since high school) wore something similar (not off the shoulder but cream lace). I was really pissed off with her but to this day she doesn't know I was upset....maybe one day I should tell her?

ok it was in 1974 but unless I looked at the photos, I would absolutely not be able to remember (or care) what guests wore.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 06/08/2026 10:34

People like that love a good moan. You probably made their year.

I've worn a lot of black and white to weddings, a monochrome Jane Norman polka dot dress was my default for weddings when I was 25 and a size 6/8.

I am not sure if its still a thing but having the whole wedding party dressed in black was thought quite fashionable for a while....it came over from the USA

A member of the bridal party who did not know anyone on the groom's side had a glass of wine thrown over her for no apparent reason.

Well, it turns out that earlier in the evening she'd snogged a man who turned out to be the father of the groom and the woman who threw the wine was his wife!

A big fight ensued with people stepping in to break it up.

We didn't discover the full story until days later.

Red or white wine?! 🤣

LatteLady · 06/08/2026 12:29

A very old friend was the plus one for the bride's mother on Don't tell the Bride. The groom had a colourful past and was handy with his fists... just as the cameras stopped rolling at the reception, it all kicked off, with the groom and his friends throwing punches... at which point the venue asked them to leave.

Noodge · 06/08/2026 12:29

This was only a 'scandal' of sorts for me personally! But last year I began dating a woman who had nagged me for months to date her, I was happily single but I did like her and she seemed very keen, we talked a lot (we were part of a wider friendship group) and I talked myself into it, telling myself I was being silly, perhaps she was right and we could work up to something very good.

One of the first conversations we ever had, she'd mentioned that her little sister was to be married soon, she was the MOH and she didn't have anyone to take as a plus one. I didn't think much of it at the time but said I hoped she found one and she asked (jokingly so I thought) if I would be it. I barely knew her at the time. Anyway after we started dating naturally I agreed to be.

Turns out, that's literally ALL she wanted me for. The rest was all lies. I found out from the grapevine that she has form for this and as I am 'easy on the eye' (apparently) and good company she thought I'd be ideal. She turned cold on me days following the wedding, started changing her attitude toward me, picking me up on very small things and making them into arguments then dumped me around 10 days later...
Madness. And made me much more wary of who I believe/when to listen to my instincts!

ETA(I am a gay woman)!

Omg!

I’m amazed that a man managed to get 4 women to do this.

was he incredibly handsome / charming?

I just can’t envision women ever doing that.

I would suspect that very much alcohol might have played into their decisions.

greenbean80 · 06/08/2026 12:05

Well maybe mine wasn’t as scandalous as some of these… I mean my community is known to go a bit wild at weddings but it’s usually too much whiskey and the odd very drunk Uncle … but nothing like this! I feel like people
do some crazy things!

What makes a wedding chavvy?

In our case I would say the abundance of chavs there and the music. There was a lot of N dubs played which is funny looking back. Also I literally got married in my big hoops which looking back is a bit funny. I don’t mean it in a negative way really most people would’ve looked at our wedding and said it was chavy.

BowlingSunflowers · 06/08/2026 11:54

@Fifthtimelucky there is a Debrett's Wedding Handbook. I thought it came from the original Debrett's. It was a long time ago and I only looked at it once as Dh and I were trying to understand his parents rigidity in their belief of what a wedding should be.

From a Guardian article featuring the book "It is best to avoid white or cream and black,” the Handbook states. “Overly bright colours and patterns should be avoided as they may dominate photographs, and care should be taken not to overshadow the bride. It is not necessary for all the components of an outfit to match.”

I would say red falls into the overly bright. But surely everyone knows you don't wear white or black and I knew about red associated with sexual relations with the groom from my childhood when I was attending a lot of weddings of my older cousins. We are from a very large family so there were a lot of weddings and someone wore red and caused uproar.

she wore her bloody wedding outfit
