Should I report this mum? Is it even reportable?

I'm seriously concerned about my partner's family member. Well, more so for her kids. She is a young adult. She has a toddler and a baby with different dads. Both toxic and abusive men and she knew about at least one of them when she got with him as he has a criminal record. She is also toxic and my partner believes they were both mutually abusive relationships. She broke up with baby's dad when she was pregnant.

She now has a new boyfriend already. She's posting him on social media and making comments that shows he's staying (living?) round hers with the kids. She keeps basically moving strangers into her home and allowing them to play dad. What if this one, or the next one, is a pedophile or violent to children?

I don't know what I should do. My partner knows it's a mess and he doesn't agree with her desicions at all. He doesn't have much positive to say about her. But he isn't really getting involved and I don't think he's going to do anything. Same with her parents. I get it's difficult. I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if something happened to one of the little ones.

Do I report somewhere anonymously? Do I stay out of it? That really doesn't seem like the right thing to do. I'd rather not go behind my partner's back and do it, but at the same time I don't know how to have that conversation with him. That's if there's even anything I can report.

I’d alert social services . Those children have no one to advocate for them .

Alert them to what?

EmpressStorm · 05/08/2026 18:21

Some of these responses are batshit. You can’t report someone as you feel they didn’t know the father long enough before they had a child or don’t know their boyfriends long enough before they move them in, well you can but they’d think you an utter crank. There is no law on how long you have fi know someone before falling pregnant or how long to know someone before you move them in. There simply isn’t, and it doesn’t meet the definition of neglect or abuse either.

sure it’s shit life choices, and not advisable but social services don’t ger involved in this, nor do the police, it’s batshit to think they do.

JLou08 · 05/08/2026 18:17

Social services can't do anything with what you've posted.
The police can if he has a record. You can call the police (101) and ask for a Claire's or Sarah's law. They probably won't give you details but if he has a record they will tell the mum your post is about, if they deem him a serious risk they will report to social services.

EmpressStorm · 05/08/2026 18:17

Are you quite ok? Life isn’t the movie minority report. You can’t report people for crimes that may happen in the future or as you’re judgey and don’t agree with someone’s life choices.

like seriously, are you ok?

Whoops75 · 05/08/2026 18:15

Could ye step in and support the kids, maybe take them for a sleepover once a week?

Reporting this isn’t likely to make any difference but you could!

Netcurtainnelly · 05/08/2026 17:33

Strange thing to say it's not a crime. It certainly does become a crime when the child gets punched about and killed

People's standards are disgusting today
Where's the thought for their children?

Bit of a jump there

SilenceInside · 05/08/2026 18:11

@Moonstars1 if the previous man was violent to her when pregnant surely social services are already aware of her situation with the children? I know that on its own won’t protect the children but it would mean the children have already had some social services involvement.

I would also do what you can to keep in contact with the children. I don’t know how much you interact with them at the moment, but if there is anything going on, having the opportunity for another adult to notice or for the child to disclose could be vital.

plasticplate · 05/08/2026 18:02

Unless there is evidence the children are subject to or witnessing abuse there is nothing to report. Moving a series of boyfriends in isn't a social services issue.

It's a pity it's not, if it was lots of babies and children would still be alive.

Wordsmithery · 05/08/2026 18:10

She's making poor choices but there's really nothing to report. She hasn't broken any laws and not have her partners, that we know of.
All you can really do is keep a watchful eye and be a great auntie (cousin/whatever) to the kids so they have some support.

youalright · 05/08/2026 18:09

Unfortunately there are a lot of crappy parents in this world that will put others above their children but there's very little you can do about it the bar is very very high for social services to get involved. The only thing you can do is spend as much time with the children as possible so they at least have some stability in their lives

Moonstars1 · 05/08/2026 18:03

Thanks for the reasonable replies. I know it's true there's probably nothing that will be done unless there's proof of abuse. I just have to watch what is likely to happen. I hope I'm wrong and this guy turns out to be a healthy happy relationship.

Like I give a shit that she's unmarried. I do think it's ideal to know a man more than a few weeks before you get pregnant by them and move them in with your existing kids. Do you want to take your chance on a man with a record being around your kids? Now said baby has no biological dad in their life, because surprise surprise the man with a record was violent to her when she was pregnant. Once could have been a really bad mistake that she learnt from.

I'm not saying it's ideal but it's not illegal and I don't think you can report it. Or rather, you can, but don't expect anything to be done about it.

Sugargliderwombat · 05/08/2026 18:02

Surprised by the messages saying there's no concern. Of course there is ! Part of caring for your child is protecting them from harm. If you're moving strangers in then you aren't, are you?

I would consider this neglect.

PrettyPickle · 05/08/2026 18:01

Moonstars1 · 05/08/2026 17:19

She gets pregnant with each boyfriend straight away. And I mean straight away. It's not a relationship gone wrong situation at all. It's having a baby with a practical stranger, ending it and then repeating the cycle.

Sadly SS cannot police adult stupidity and as bad as its sounds, something needs to happen, neglect, etc.

Moonstars1 · 05/08/2026 17:59

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/08/2026 17:47

Perhsps society should remove all babies born to unmarried mothers . Maybe they'd be better off in orphanages or sent to Australia or sold to rich, childless Americans. Maybe they should re-open the Magdalen laundries for wayward women.

Maybe men with criminal records should be given vasectomies in case they come into contact with any children or, heaven forbid, father their own. Maybe they should be locked up on the off-chance they might be child abusers even if they have shown no indication of this.

No. She wants to consider the safety of the children when a virtual STRANGER has moved in to her house with them.

She's allowed to have a boyfriend and have him stay over. She's even allowed to get pregnant with him if she wants. Her in-laws may disapprove but unless there is evidence of harm or neglect there nothing to report.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 05/08/2026 17:54

You can't report someone for the potential they could maybe at some point in the future commit a crime, no matter how maddening her behaviour.

The best thing you can do is to be a stable adult role model, give love and care to the children and try to talk some sense into her / persuade her to do Claire's Law disclosures / persuade her to go on contraception.

Oh and keep an eye on the children of course for any signs of abuse.

SouthLondonMum22 · 05/08/2026 17:52

Social services won't be interested.

Marieb19 · 05/08/2026 17:51

I can understsnd your concerns but I'm afraid social services won't get involved unless there is reported abuse or harm. I'm assuming this relative doesn't work and claims benefits. If you want him moved out, report her to the DWP. I'm sure she would rather keep her benefits than him.

Abouteffingtime · 05/08/2026 17:49

Report what, and to who?

goggly20 · 05/08/2026 17:49

MerryUmberHedgehog · 05/08/2026 16:57

Report to social services

And say what? She’s got a new boyfriend? Are they already on SS radar? If not she’s doing nothing different to millions of other people. You don’t have to approve and neither do I but it’s not a reportable offence unless there is evidence of neglect or abuse.

Minasama · 05/08/2026 17:47

I personally would never move a man in with my daughters. Just no way. But I’m fortunate that I’m not in that situation because their dad is still around and given they’re now teenagers, if anything happened to him I’d only have to wait a few years!
