AIBU to want Christmas in Thailand with our daughter?

Our daughter and her husband moved to Singapore about 3 months ago. They aren’t coming back at Christmas because they want to settle in and not come home too soon.

Both DH and I have both parents around, thankfully, but in their 80s and 90s. Both sets go out for their meals at local hotels on Christmas day. We then see them in the evening.

DD has asked it we’d consider meeting them in Thailand for Christmas. To stay at a really nice hotel and have Christmas together. I would be sad to not be at home but think this sounds great. DD2 is also keen. DH has said absolutely not. Christmas is a family time and that means staying in Sussex.

Fly to thailand on xmas dsy or boxing dwy.

Wonderfulstuff · 05/08/2026 15:22

Go on your own. Sounds dreamy.

AlphabetBird · 05/08/2026 15:11

Go! But be aware flight costs to Thailand at Christmas are brutally expensive. Do the maths before you emotionally commit!

I’d go with dd2.

We can’t spend every Christmas with our parents just incase it’s their last and they go off for their own meals in various hotels anyway.

Not like they are relying on you for their dinner and tbh even then I’d say one year break won’t hurt.

You could still have 10-15 years off but this might be their last Christmas depending on if the younger make it to near 100.

I agree with this. You can't go around saying "what if it's their last Christmas" no one knows when that is. My FIL died suddenly aged 65. Noone knew the previous Christmas would be the last. My dad's 94 so likely only a few left but Christmas is not how it was and seeing him any time is special.
Could you do a get together before you go to Thailand and facetime on Christmas day. After all DD1 is family too.

Go to Thailand, don't abuse anyone there. Problem solved

Just got back from Thailand this morning. Such a fabulous country.

How ridiculous of the PP what talked about kiddie fiddling etc preventing them from going there. Have you been oblivious to the grooming rings in the UK? And believe me, just because you don’t hear about it in such a blatant way, there are some horrible things going on behind closed doors in Singapore.
Having not gone to Thailand one year for Christmas because my DF said it might be my grandfather’s last Christmas, it wasn’t, and I later found out I missed out on a life-changing experience. I would be working on DH to get him to see that.

Yes I am aware of appalling things in this country and others.
It doesn’t mean I would proactively go to somewhere famous for it.
Thailand is a place I would not choose to go to.
I don’t find my view ridiculous at all. I feel angry about child abuse and angry at young men who go there to abuse women who are poor.

ImpatientlyWaitingForSummer · 05/08/2026 15:04

I would 100% go, I think it would be amazing! Is it just because he wants to see his parents in the evening? Because surely you could still just do this a couple of days or so before?

How was the weather?

pinkspeakers · 05/08/2026 15:02

However, I'd probably be looking at flight prices and if it was a lot cheaper to fly just after Xmas, or even on Xmas Day, then I'd probably do that. I think that Xmas in Thailand will be so different that it won't really matter whether you are actually there for "the day" or not.

croisette · 05/08/2026 15:01

PS I couldn’t care less if I never have another traditional British dingy dark Christmas in all my days. I had them for 4 decades and I’ve had enough. We’ve been to the sun every year since covid and it’s absolutely wonderful celebrating in the sunshine.

croisette · 05/08/2026 15:00

I’ll go if you don’t OP 😂

Personally I'm a bit of a sticker for my traditional British Christmas. However, if you want to go and DDs are keen then I can absolutely understand why you would.

Of course, the parents are a concern, but it sounds as if you don't see very much of them at Christmas anyway. Will any other family members see them?

Have you ever been to Thailand? It's a wonderful country,

Well no. Because I would not want to go. There are other places I would choose to spend my money.
And there is a lot that is not wonderful about it. But too many turn a blind eye to child abuse and prostitution of children and women. For which it is well known.

Go to Thailand!
I never want to have a cold dark Christmas ever again, waking up on Xmas morning and putting shorts and flip flops on is fantastic

Past 2 years have shown us what a joy it can be to be outside the UK

Tell me about the food if you can!

We really love the food! Lots of rice, fresh fish, noodles and delicious flavours. My little girl loves the Chicken Satay.

sittingonabeach · 05/08/2026 14:50

Are you ad DH both only children? Doesn't sound like either set of parents are on their own. Meet up with them before Christmas and then fly out. Do they have the technology to be able to do video call some time on Christmas Day?

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 05/08/2026 14:49

What’s the cost? Is it something you as a family can easily afford?

Gowlett · 05/08/2026 14:48

Three women want to go. One man says no.

REP22 · 05/08/2026 14:47

MrsJPBP · 05/08/2026 12:27

Not only would I go, I’d be very prepared to leave DH at home to have a hotel lunch with his parents. Life’s too short not to grab the adventure while you can!

This, and what @zurigo says. It's lovely that your DD wants to welcome you to her new part of the world. It is interesting that DH says "Christmas is a family time", without factoring DD1 and her husband into that (or your and DD2's preferences). Is it less about "Christmas is family" and more about "Christmas is family - but on my terms only"?

I think you should go. You can socialise with the older relatives beforehand this year. If it's a complete disaster (I'm sure it won't be), you can always decline to do it again in future, secure in the knowledge that you gave it a fair go.

Vaxtable · 05/08/2026 14:46

I would point out to dh that dd1 is also family and will be on her own with her husband

I would be telling him that you and dd2 will be going and he can choose to come or stay it’s up to him

TillieAndPosey · 05/08/2026 14:46

I spent Christmas Day last year with my eldest son in Cornwall. Due to the nature of his job, he only had Christmas Day off work. It was brilliant and will always stand out in my mind for being different, and so fun. My boyfriend went to his parents house and my youngest child spent the day with his dad and my exIL's. So everyone was happy and we all FaceTimed on Christmas Day.

Just for it, what an adventure! If your husband wants to miss out, so be it.
