AIBU to expect air conditioning in August without extra room charges?

I've booked a package holiday through a provider- I have attached the room details.

AIBU to think that AirCon May-October meant that my room in August would have Aircon?

Instead I get it for three hours a day, otherwise I have to pay £10 per room, per day- we have four rooms. I have never experienced this before, the fault is with the package provider, but is this standard practice?

It quite clearly states "Aircon available" which insinuates its not automatically included. In addition, it doesn't have the tick mark next to it like all the other included items.

I agree with the available not included view.

3 hours would be plenty for most people to cool somewhere down when you get back in the evening. If you need to be in the room longer it’s worth paying!

It says air con available, not included. Referring to it as available seems like something you can get, not will get.

I agree it’s vague but that’s how I read it.

While I agree that the wording indicates that it's not included - I think I would have made the same assumption, and only realised after the fact, like you have.

I hope it was a relatively cheap holiday!

Some friends of mine in Portugal rent their house out as a holiday let. The first summer, they were faced with electricity bills which averaged €1000 per week. Some weeks were lower, other much higher. Tenants would leave windows and patio doors open with it on ("we need fresh air") as well as internal doors open ("the staircase gets so hot") and have it running 24 hours, even when they had gone out for the day.

From the second summer onwards, there was a supplementary charge.

Me neither. Wherever I stay aircon is included, or there is no aircon.

Unless it’s Cuba, I would not expect to pay extra and simply wouldn’t book it. What country is it?

If you have four rooms - can you not stay in one mid afternoon before dinner.

Another after that, then the third room and finally fourth room and then by bedtime you might be able to open windows and cool naturally

I get why you thought included clout the big red flag is the word available not included

Available, not included. It's very clearly an add-on. You're getting 3 hours of it a day for free, so you're doing well out of the package. How long are you planning on spending in the room?

Oh come on. I would have made the same assumption as the op, simply because I have never been anywhere that charges for air conditioning. It's either been there and included in the holiday cost or not there at all.

Well in very hot weather I would have the AC on all night.

Unfortunately it is set hours, and is on when we are not in the rooms- plus it is 40 so needed.

easyJet holidays - we have used them loads and have never come across this.

I would have assumed included, Everywhere I've been it's free but only available when you are in the room with the key card in the slot and doors and windows closed.

They'll be saying toilet roll available next and charging for more than one roll

Yes, this is an issue. People who aren't paying the (considerable) electricity bill leave it on when they go out, or have it on with windows and doors open so they're trying to air condition the entire planet.

3 hours doesn't seem too bad. It won't be needed in the morning, you'd be out most of the day, then perhaps an hour in the evening while you're getting ready to go out for dinner and then a couple of hours while you're getting to sleep and then it cools down anyway. Presumably it's on a timer so you can use the 3 hours and then switches off?

If that's not enough, you either pay for it, or don't go somewhere that's too hot without artificial cooling.

Ah, I see that you might not get to choose the hours. But the reality is that wasteful use of air con is incredibly expensive so accommodation providers can't afford to just absorb the cost.

This is what a different hotel says.

I read it as available May-October and it is an all inclusive resort so stupidly though it was included

In my experience it is included in AI hotels but we stayed in a SC hotel last year in Turkey where we had to pay an additional charge for aircon.

I would have read it like you OP. aircon only certain months, but in those months it’s included.

However - in your case it is included - but only for 3 hours a day. What hours is it out of interest?

With that wording I would expect it included, why would you not think it is. The word available doesn’t make me jump to chargeable, so I would not be happy either. That’s a lot of money and it is needed.

If there was a charge for it, it should have said so. Usually there’s an asterisk for what is payable.
*3 hours per day included, charge of £10 per room, per day for full air con use.

Is it hot enough at night to definitely need it on for ages? Like couldn't you ration it out so you have an hour or two at night then an extra hour or whatever during the day at some point. I mean you shouldn't really be needing to spend more than an hour or so in the room during the day anyway? So it might be alright.
