AIBU to seek help after taking items from school lost property?

This is really hard to say, but I need some reassurance because I’m not sure what to do anymore. I have always really struggled with impulse control and suspect I’m undiagnosed with something on top of my OCD. But recently Ive found myself stealing clothes from DDs schools lost property which is bad enough. But to add to my torment, I’m selling them on Vinted. We don’t need the money as DH owns a successful business, but I just can’t help myself each time the box is outside reception and I’m in the vicinity. I just get such a buzz from knowing I’m helping to recycle but feel guilty for stealing. Is it really unreasonable- like if the parents wanted those things back surely they would just claim them not leave them there, also it’s not my fault f I can’t help myself? I wish I could but I can’t! Please be kind it feels like a weights lifted already.

I knew someone like this and it escalated, they are now in prison for stealing money from their employer. Get help asap.

I’m impressed you found anything worth stealing. In any lost property box I saw (ex-primary teacher), there are a wide variety of singleton gloves/socks, six sweaters with chewed sleeves, a lunchbox (left with half eaten sandwiches for a term), and a couple of completely random items, e.g. k-pop demon hunters scarf. Not really likely to make money on Vinted.

Edited

Exactly. Probably a wind up.

tooloololoo · 05/08/2026 22:32

That’s seriously fucked

HopefulYankee · 05/08/2026 22:23

So you are not only stealing from children but you are also making a profit by selling it on Vinted.

Iydrd · 05/08/2026 22:12

OP I hope you are Ok. Hopefully as harsh as they are, the comments the pps are making will help
to reframe what you have been doing and get you to stop.

cupfinalchaos · 05/08/2026 22:03

I cannot understand how you can be bothered to do this or would even want to. Are you bored?

Diagnoses are not an excuse for stealing clothes and then selling them to make a profit. You are choosing to do this which makes you a thief. Don’t go blaming it on having ocd or something else- face up to the choices you have made and make better ones from now on.

This, fed up with the “hey everyone, come celebrate me for my super honesty with my shitty behaviour!! But i have a gotcha for it so can never be expected to have responsibility! Yay!!”

This can't be real!

Absolutely this

Nearly50omg · 05/08/2026 21:38

you are a THIEF!!! This isn’t an illness or a “oh I can’t help it!” Scenario you are doing this knowingly!!

Redflagsabounded · 05/08/2026 21:36

What everyone else said plus

How will it feel when you are caught, OP. And eventually, you will be. You might be criminally charged, you might not. At the very least you will be marked as the school thief with school staff, who will watch you carefully when you're on the premises, will not let you get involved with any fundraising events, will nudge each other and look at you. How long before a parent at the school who has to buy from Vinted twigs that you seem to have a lot of random uniform to sell? Or sees their child's stolen items for sale? You'll be crucified among the parents.

You need help urgently. Stop attempting to excuse the inexcusable. Think about a child with too little uniform and a parent scraping by and unable to replace it. That child being bullied because they are wearing the same grubby sweatshirt all week. It's not victimless.

How long before you get an 'impulse' to shoplift? Or steal from family/friends. You'll be in deep shit then.

canklesmctacotits · 05/08/2026 21:28

Of course it's your fault 😂

You're a thief. At least own it!

fashionqueen0123 · 05/08/2026 21:28

Recycling?! That would be asking the school what items can go to a clothing bank or charity. Things that have maybe been there for months etc

Not nicking things which people may be looking for and putting them on vinted to make a profit! Thats outright theft.

This has zero to do with OCD either.

CountessBinface · 05/08/2026 21:18

If any of this is true, you are a bad person.

Seajaye · 05/08/2026 14:27

I think you get a buzz from doing this as it's not kleptomania when you are reselling on Vinted, it's ordinary stealing.. Like lots of criminal who enjoy the thrill of not not getting caught in the act. When you eventually caught out, how will you feel and how will this impact your family and comfortable lifestyle?

Sartre · 05/08/2026 12:42

What’s in the lost property worth selling? It’s usually beanie hats, gloves and school jumpers in my DC’s…

Mooselander · 05/08/2026 12:41

YABVU. It absolutely is your fault and you absolutely can help yourself.

MonsterasEverywhere · 05/08/2026 12:38

So, not only is it theft, it's also dealing in stolen goods and potentially fraud depending on your descriptions on Vinted. Racking up the potential criminal charges there OP. I feel for your child and husband.

BeachTimeIsBliss · 05/08/2026 12:15

Fuck me, it's just a few bits of second hand clothing.

The best time to raid the box is September / October when all the new coats have been lost. That's a joke by the way!

BMW58 · 05/08/2026 12:10

This can't be real!

BreatheAndFocus · 05/08/2026 11:33

You’re stealing. Stealing isn’t recycling. More than that, you’re profiting from your crimes by selling the stolen items on Vinted.

Have you not heard of the saying ‘do as you would be done by’? How would you like it if someone ‘recycled’ your car because you hadn’t used it for a few days? Or ‘recycled’ your phone that you’d accidently left at a cafe and didn’t realise until you got home?

If this is real, you need to stop. If you genuinely can’t stop, then you need to speak to your GP and get MH support. Someone will find you out soon and then you’ll be speaking to the police.

hopspot · 05/08/2026 11:18

Are you giving the money back to the school?

Cardhey · 05/08/2026 11:00

You’re a criminal. Simple as that. This is all premeditated to, not on impulse, so don’t try and excuse your behaviour.

Poppinpoppinpopcorn · 05/08/2026 10:58

Stop doing it. You are preventing someone their clothes. The parents may not be in a position to replace them they might be in a position where they have to make the choice of replacing clothes or buying food. I don't know how you can live with yourself. Yes get help and replace the items you stole.
