AIBU to think PC Harper's killers being released early is awful?

To think it's awful PC Harper's killers will be let out early.
As if it isn't hard enough for his wife and his family that it happened, now they face all this early release. How cruel. How absolutely cruel can life be?🤢

What a rotten justice system we have.
Petitions are going round, but they shouldn't have to?
What's the betting the offenders will just carry on the same way as before when released anyway?
How can anyone in their right mind think it's acceptable?🤔😮

The DP is not a deterrent in any way, shape or form.

It’s not a deterrent, but it would solve the overcrowding crisis if they did it within a set timeframe

Userxyd · 04/08/2026 22:08

Do you know what would be a million times better and less dangerous for society? Empty the women’s prisons. How many random, premeditated murderers will be in there? Virtually none Id bet. And plenty for ridiculous reasons or where very specific, unrepeatable circumstances caused them to do something terrible like they were coerced by a partner into it.
That would be far more palatable for the general public for sure.

I don’t see why you’d think it would act as a deterrent. US states with the death penalty have higher murder rates than the states without it.

Do you think if the US states with the death penalty abolished it, and the states without the death penalty introduced it, those statistics would reverse?

Maybe the death penalty states have it because their murder rate is so high?

I bet if it was done in public, it would.

If our prisons are so overcrowded something has to be done that doesn't involve releasing violent criminals early.
I'm sure there could be a deal that could be done to ensure other countries imprison their own nationals.

Do you not think that would have been done by now if that were the case?

Lemonfrost · 04/08/2026 22:06

Digerydont · 04/08/2026 21:42

We need the death penalty, we can't afford to incarcerate villains any more. Resentence all lifers to death. A series of mass hangings. Frees up plenty of prison spaces. Also, would act as a deterrent.

OonaStubbs · 04/08/2026 22:06

We definitely need more prisons. Build a massive "SuperMax" prison somewhere remote for all the psychotic killers etc and just keep low level criminals, shoplifters, fare evaders etc in the normal prisons. We should definitely look at bringing back the death sentence too. It's just getting ridiculous now.

Userxyd · 04/08/2026 22:02

It’s absolutely appalling. Build more prisons. Find somewhere else for the new prisoners - what about those ships that had immigrants on? What about Rwanda? It’s just not viable - massive error of judgment of Burnham to let this go ahead.

Minasama · 04/08/2026 22:02

It is beyond appalling. They should be locked up for life for killing a police officer and laughing about it.

Largely, I am joking.

Google it, no cop killers have ever been released in the UK

Digerydont · 04/08/2026 21:52

Ever since the abolition of the death penalty, there has been a tacit agreement between the state and the police that cop killers will never be freed. Harry Roberts killed 3 coppers and served 48 years and was only let out on humanitarian grounds. He was given life with minimum of 30 years.

If Burnham allows these men to be freed early, he has broken that agreement.

Gloriia · 04/08/2026 21:52

Lemonfrost · 04/08/2026 21:31

No. If we do that, there is no guarantee that they will serve one day of their sentence once out of the country. What about their victims?

I feel so desperately sorry for PC Harper's family. It's been one kick in the teeth after another from this Government.

Digerydont · 04/08/2026 21:27

It was borderline manslaughter/murder. If we had 2nd degree murder like in the USA, that would have been the verdict.

I live in the area where it happened. It currently has a Labour MP (Olivia Bailey).

If general conversation is anything to go by, I wouldn't count on her being re-elected if they are released early.

If Ms Bailey isn't worried, she should be.

So are locals horrified?

Even if 'manslaughter' is criteria for early release surely there should be sub section. To cause such a horrific death should be a no. It's not rocket science is it.

I imagine she is. She put out a statement firmly against it.

Burnham fired her so I doubt she’ll be in the mood to back him up.

Wasn't the first time they'd been out thieving either, just this time they were caught.
Wonder what they plan to do when released?

Oh they'll live feral lives on their snazzy revamped site no doubt. Surely the police will keep a close eye on them and will hopefully have them banged back up in no time.

Netcurtainnelly · 04/08/2026 21:13

Gloriia · 04/08/2026 21:11

Well yes I maybe should have advised the prosecution team.

They prove many things in court through expert opinions, reenactments etc. You get a flat tyre and it's clear when driving so dragging an adult would've been obvious, it would have also been obvious it would kill him.

They had just stolen a quad bike which was previously being towed.

How do you prove, beyond reasonable doubt, they knew they were towing a person and not a quad?

If you know they knew, why did you not provide this evidence to the prosecution to use in court?

Manslaughter was the right result in this case. It secured a conviction and jailed them. Murder would never have stuck.
