AIBU to think PC Harper's killers being released early is awful?

They stole stuff. A police officer tried to apprehend them and lost his life because they recklessly dragged him along the road, somehow not releasing he was there. There are people, on Mumsnet, who think that isn't murder.

Yes. There should be a severe punishment for anyone who hurts or worse murders any public service worker in emergency services.

It was the Tories who failed to fund public services adequately during their 14-year term, including the Police, the justice system and HM Prison and Probation Service (amongst many others). Now we're in the mess we're in and it's not as if we weren't warned multiple times that this would happen. But millions of people kept on voting for the Tories anyway. And some of these people are now blaming Labour for not having rebuilt public services within just two years. You couldn't make it up.

It was nothing to do with the jury. They were charged, tried and convicted for manslaughter because their actions didn’t fit the parameters for murder. It was the CPS that made the decision to bring a charge that would stick. And lack of premeditation means lack of intent.

They obviously need to build new prisons if dangerous inmates are being considered for early release. It's bad enough most prisoners only serve 2/3 of sentence.

Not really, because states that abolish it see changes to their murder rates that are in line with the rest of the country ie they don’t see an abnormal increase.

Also the death penalty has been in place for so long, if it was introduced because of high murder rates, you’d think they’d have figured out it isn’t working.

Dartmoor prison is still closed, since 2023, there is no sign of it re- opening. As shameful as it is, we desperately need more prisons to lock up all these evil men.

They have cocked up with PC Harpers's killers. They should never be released. But because they have determinate sentences, they will eventually be released. We need a law, "cause the death of an emergency worker, you get life."
