AIBU to think PC Harper's killers being released early is awful?

To think it's awful PC Harper's killers will be let out early.
As if it isn't hard enough for his wife and his family that it happened, now they face all this early release. How cruel. How absolutely cruel can life be?🤢

What a rotten justice system we have.
Petitions are going round, but they shouldn't have to?
What's the betting the offenders will just carry on the same way as before when released anyway?
How can anyone in their right mind think it's acceptable?🤔😮

@pearlbuttonsLocking multiple prisoners up together might not cause riots but they’d definitely end up killing each other. It’s far too complex than just triple bunks, bang up 24/7 ,sanctions on non compliance, cutting communications apart from legal teams; it’s all been tried & tested but nothing works.

OonaStubbs · 06/08/2026 22:26

If we lived in a decent society there wouldn't be violent thugs killing police officers and laughing about it.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 06/08/2026 21:52

@OonaStubbs You do realise the prisoners being considered for release were charged with manslaughter and did not get a life sentence. They were not charged with murder.

Still selfish thieving scum. Are their parents proud?

@BIossomtoes When you say you have "geriatric thinking" do you mean that you are very very old and are offering this up as a reason for the fact that you thoughts might not be as coherent as they once were?

That said, my dad is geriatric and can process thoughts so maybe it is nothing to do with your age and more to do with...fluffiness!

As I say, I hope that you and yours do not become a victim of the thugs that will now wander at will , emboldened by their early release but I repeat, and I urge you to fire up those brain cells and imagine this, it's as sure as the sunrise every morning that someone will.

That's right @BIossomtoes someone. somewhere in this land will become a victim of someone who enjoys early release. That's a big thought, a real thought and a thought that will become fact.

Goodnight and enjoy your Horlicks!

As I said, it’s a good thing rudeness doesn’t carry a prison sentence. My thoughts are entirely coherent, you just don’t agree with them.

SayWhatty · 06/08/2026 21:59

Gloriia · 04/08/2026 21:06

Deporting them is surely?

Don't you think they should serve their sentences first?
If the 2 men mentioned by the OP were from another country would you be fine about them going home without serving their sentence?

It’s a mark of not having enough prison places. My way of thinking is geriatric not adolescent. Good thing rudeness doesn’t carry a prison sentence, isn’t it?

PearlButtons · 06/08/2026 21:13

BIossomtoes · 06/08/2026 21:08

In your opinion. How sad for you that we live in a halfway civilised society.

Is it a mark of civilisation then to release violent prisoners before their term is served?

How sad for you to have this fluffy, adolescent way of thinking.

I hope that you and your don't come to grief because of this half baked policy but of this you may be sure...someone will.

Also-and you'd better get your smelling salts here @BIossomtoes as you try to channel Elizabeth Fry-take any fucker who breaks up their cell and put them in a padded cell in a strait jacket.

That-and my other suggestions-are all better than releasing violent thugs onto the streets.

Just dig a pig pit and throw all the criminal scum into it.

Don’t be ridiculous. How would locking people up 24 hours a day stop them rioting?

Well, @BIossomtoes it would be pretty difficult for a bunch of thugs to run riot around a prison if their cell door was locked!

Sure, they could smash up their cells individually. Well let them! What are they going to do? Break up their own stuff...carry on and sleep on the floor. Who cares! No prison officer goes near them.

See how they like those onions.

BIossomtoes · 06/08/2026 20:26

PearlButtons · 06/08/2026 20:24

They wouldn't be rioting if they were locked in their cells. That would keep guards safe.

Dartmoor closed because it had high levels of radon gas.

Overcrowding means violence and riots. Life’s hard enough for prison officers as it is without intentionally creating conditions to make it more dangerous for them.

Bulding an estate of houses based on existing plans is a very different matter from building a prison. The security for prisons needs to be a lot better, for a start, and they need much bigger kitchens! And even if they were built, they'd still need to find staff to work in them.

They need to crack on with it though, especially since they had to close Dartmoor. That held several hundred prisoners when it was at capacity.

Why did they close Dartmoor?

Yes, I appreciate a prison is different from a house but surely there are architects available to either draw up plans for new ones or to add existing wings onto old ones. It's not beyond the wit of man surely.

Staff-staff can always be found if the pay is good enough and if the pay isn't good enough, lock those who have committed a violent crime in their cell for all day. Who cares! In any event, it is better than having the bastards walking the street putting me and mine and you and yours at risk.

What isn't acceptable is releasing them early because the prisons are overcrowded.

In any case, how are they defining overcrowding?

Do they mean a prison is overcrowded if prisoners don't have their own cell because if that's the case, change that definition right away and stick four bunkbeds in a cell. Most of the public won't shed tears over that!

I imagine she is. She put out a statement firmly against it.

Burnham fired her so I doubt she’ll be in the mood to back him up.

Anyone can put out a statement (and write an article in today's local paper).
The voters will want action.
Like it or not, as the local Labour MP she will be paying the price if the Labour Govt. gets this wrong.

I wonder why it is impossible to build new prisons. They seem to be able to throw up whole hosing estates in less than three months.

In what world, does anyone with even the wit with of a portly hamster, see that prisons are becoming overcrowded and shout, " I know! Let's release the prisoners! Drinks all round!

Instead of shouting, " I know! Let's build more prisons!"

We need the death penalty, we can't afford to incarcerate villains any more. Resentence all lifers to death. A series of mass hangings. Frees up plenty of prison spaces. Also, would act as a deterrent.

Unfortunately, the justice system is not infallible and there have been many, many cases where people have been convicted of murder and whose convictions have subsequently been proven to be wrong.

Had capital punishment still been in force in the 1970s and 80s, the Birmingham 6, the Guildford 4, the Maguire 7, the Tottenham 3, the M25 murderers, Stefan Kiszko and Judith Ward would almost certainly have all been executed, despite them being innocent of any crime. And that's just the cases that became famous, there have probably been many more that I can't recall.

Even with advances in forensic science, it's never going to be possible to prevent miscarriages of justice, and for that reason alone capital punishment should never be reintroduced.

OonaStubbs · 06/08/2026 18:58

Either the death sentence of life meaning life would be acceptable. But never early release.

Gloriia · 06/08/2026 18:40

OonaStubbs · 06/08/2026 18:18

We should definitely bring back the death penalty for scumbags such as this.

Imo a full prison sentence then strict conditions on release such as return to prison after the slightest altercation <and with these 2 there's bound to be many> would do. I'm sure the local police will keep a very close eye on them.

Build more prisons. If there's the political will, they can find the money.

It's not just the money though. People want more prisons but not near them.
