AIBU to think PC Harper's killers being released early is awful?

To think it's awful PC Harper's killers will be let out early.
As if it isn't hard enough for his wife and his family that it happened, now they face all this early release. How cruel. How absolutely cruel can life be?🤢

What a rotten justice system we have.
Petitions are going round, but they shouldn't have to?
What's the betting the offenders will just carry on the same way as before when released anyway?
How can anyone in their right mind think it's acceptable?🤔😮

What do you say to people who ask why they cannot see any evidence that crime is lower in their daily lives?

I'd say to them: collect the data. Record all crime in the area for a quarter, say, then compare it to to historic data.

People are wrong to say "crime is getting out of control" when it is significantly lower than it was 30 years ago, yes.

So crime is low and people are just wrong to say otherwise?

Common sense is my source. Having eyes and ears and a brain is my source. Can you provide a source that crime is lower other than the official crime statistics which are almost universally agreed to be false?

That's an awful lot of words when you could have just said "no, I have bugger all".

Please can you provide a verified source for this?

@Paul2023 As there’s a need for more prison space, manslaughter is one of the crimes that is now under consideration for early release. It’s a crime where the offender did not set out to kill someone and therefore it’s not murder. The offender would need to satisfy parole conditions but parole does not have “degrees” of manslaughter. It’s not categorized as one case being worse than another, but sentence and circumstances reflect this. So the arguments about who is killed are not reflected in the law. To say certain prisoners cannot be considered would be quite a change from standard procedure but of course not all prisoners would pass the parole board to get early release.

Crime figures might be down but they aren't accurate. Actual crime is way, way up.

Please can you provide a verified source for this?

Even official figures admit that crime against women and girls is on the up. The trouble is figures in the U.K. have been gerrymandered and fiddled since the 80s. Public trust is low. We can all see the increase in gangs on our streets and we can all hear and see the increase in levels of violence when it occurs. I grew up in a poor abandoned ex mining town with low level drugs and violence, surrounded by affluent people and areas. My experience is that there are ever fewer affluent areas with more extreme wealth, with the middle class areas being brought down to match the shitty ones.

How can crime have fallen since the 1990s when the prison population has almost doubled since 1995?

Try reading the links provided.

needastrongone · Today 09:44

Because sentences are longer….

That’s pure paranoia. The government is lying to us, straight out of Trump and Farage’s playbook.

Yes, crime figures have gone down, not up. People should check evidence before making bold statements.

There needs to be massive crackdown on crime in this country because it is getting Out Of Control.

It's really not.

Since the mid-1990s, there have been HUGE drops in crime levels:

What has changed is that we hear so much more frequently and more quickly about anything that does happen thanks to 24-hour newsfeeds, social media etc.

We should stop housing violent offenders from overseas i dont get how when you pass your driving test you can have conditions put on it like hey caught speeding within two years you lose your licence but cant make the right to remain linked to good behaviour

"Im fleeing from persecution so im going to commit violent crimes in the country that's helping me" why do we not bounce them out for that because they cant be that scared or they would behave themselves

Paul2023 · 07/08/2026 22:27

Just to be clear , the Tory government closed about 20 prisons in England from 2010
A few new ones were built but only a handful.

Labour didn’t close prisons , they built them under Tony Blair

Paul2023 · 07/08/2026 22:22

First of all, surely manslaughter wouldn’t qualify someone to be released early ?

Secondly, surely it would also take into account the offenders behaviour in prison ? They didn’t show any remorse and are laughing whilst going to court?

Surely the fact they’ve shown no remorse should also go against them ?

I don’t see why any prisoner being considered for early release should be treated differently because their victim was a policeman. All victims matter. The police administer the law, not make it. I’m not saying that PC Harper’s sad death is unimportant-just that it isn’t extra important.

While it is true that all victims matter and no individual life is inherently worth more than another, an attack on a police officer isn't just a crime against an individual. They're enforcers of the law so an attack on them is also an attack on the system of law and order.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/08/2026 09:44

@Netcurtainnelly What a ridiculous comment about their parents! Are the parents of any prisoner proud of their dc? What's that got to do with anything?

JoeSikoraTommysStory · 06/08/2026 23:53

@pearlbuttonsLocking multiple prisoners up together might not cause riots but they’d definitely end up killing each other. It’s far too complex than just triple bunks, bang up 24/7 ,sanctions on non compliance, cutting communications apart from legal teams; it’s all been tried & tested but nothing works.

OonaStubbs · 06/08/2026 22:26

If we lived in a decent society there wouldn't be violent thugs killing police officers and laughing about it.
