AIBU to consider leaving an easy remote job for a complete career change?

I can’t decide if I’ve got it so good that I’ve started taking it for granted, or if I’m right to be restless.

I’ve been in my current job for 5 years. I’m fully remote, working from home everyday. To be honest, there’s a lot of gaps in the day, I have a lot of time to keep on top of the house, watch tv, go for walks, pop out for appointments. I work flexible hours, I can do school runs no problem. I get 31 days annual leave a year, a good pension, good sick pay etc. It’s secure and has a whole host of benefits. The problem is I’m so bored, it’s tedious admin, spreadsheets, data entry, minute taking and nothing else. I could do it in my sleep. Whilst it’s freeing having so much spare time, I feel like I waste entire days in bed sometimes because I smashed out all my work in 1 hour.

On a whim, I applied for a Sales Negotiator job and I went for the interview and it went really well. It’s hybrid role, so I would still work from home sometimes but not everyday. The basic salary is a bit less than I’m currently on, but the commission opportunities are really good, if I’m any good at it. I love properties and interior design and would enjoy going to see all the different properties, it would be nice to get out and about and talk to people more again. But I’m so stuck on whether I take it or not. I’m not much of a sales person, trying to push someone into buying something would be my worst nightmare, but I feel with properties they come to you more than you chase them.

I’m just not sure if I’m making a mistake. Will the novelty wear off and I’ll miss how comfortable I had it? Or am I wasting my life sitting at home by myself doing admin that doesn’t remotely challenge me? I’m 29

In reality, no one can answer this but you. No one can predict the future, the new role could be amazing, all youve ever dreamed of - or it could not. The question is how disposed are you to handling wither of those outcomes?

Will you sit there regretting the decision, looking backward wishing you'd never made the leap and wishing you were back in your old role with its boredom and flexibility or would you take stock or your situation (whatever it is) and make strides to improve it?

The question for me is not whether the new role would work or not, its more what type of person are you (going to be)?

You are bored. WFH full time is great in many ways when children are young but it is SO lonely you could scream, year in year out.

Sounds like you are ready for a change. And there's no hard sell in property. It's much more subtle - getting people to see positives and potential.

But before you go for it, think it through in practical terms. Who picks up DC from school if you are not around? How much would a childminder or after school club cost? When would you get to do housework, laundry, physical exercise?

It could be that you just need more structured contact-time in the real world to off-set the isolation and boredom of the very cushy job you have. Could you have a project on the go, so instead of sloping off to bed when there's no work to do, you can get stuck into an online course, writing a book, a craft project etc.
