To have walked out of the restaurant

I had been at a play area with my kids and when we went to sit down it was a booth. My kids immediately started bickering about who’s food was whose and which drink belonged to who and I’m trying to get them to just shuffle down a bit so I can sit down. They weren’t listening to me at all. Eventually I was going to blow and stepped outside.

@watchthetv your replies have made me LOL 😆. Bet they were shocked when you walked off.
Hopefully things calmed down and you were able to get something to eat.

wildnwilde · 04/08/2026 17:58

Been here many times op . They where left with the other parent take your time to calm down it's normal

Well, it wasn’t King Charles and Camilla was it Confused yes, their dad and PIL

I was rather hoping it was Charles and Camilla.

JWag · 04/08/2026 17:38

Listen, it’s done now. Nothing you can do to go back and change what has happened. Going outside to calm down for a few mins was a good call. I have 3 dc and they would argue the toss over anything for no reason at times. They were especially good at arguing the second they got into the car. I look back now and have a lot of respect for my parents because I remember my siblings and I being by the same.its not the end of the world. I learnt, through trial & error, how to shut them down and it did get better but I didn’t always get it right. I stopped the car once and threatened to throw them all out and make them walk home I was so at the end of my tether. Not my finest moment, I know, but they did calm down a lot after that. Tomorrow’s a new day. Don’t be so hard on yourself

To be fair everyone was telling them to move but they just were so focused on arguing that anyone else’s voice was unheard. Mine are the best argument I’ve ever seen for only children.

Well, you and your husband are the only people who can put that right. Bring them up not to behave like that. I can't believe you're at such a loss as to how to deal with a 3 and a 5 year old. Who normally looks after them?

If you had got yourself into such a state though, and they weren't in danger or inconveniencing others, stepping outside for a bit might have been a good call.

If I’d physically removed then I’d have knocked all the drinks etc over (not much room!) I hate the way ordinary stuff with kids turns into misery.

100% agree! Fortunately my dd (only child as I can't cope with more than one!) is a teen now but my god can they suck the joy out of supposedly "enjoyable" experiences.
Even if you had been the only adult there leaving them briefly like that would've given them a short, sharp shock that would've soon ended the bickering and brought them back to behaving themselves again.
Its6 like when my dd was lying on the floor of an aquarium having a toddler tantrum one time....I walked off and she got up and came after me. It simply says to them "I'm not hanging around to deal with this nonsense".

Slawbans · 04/08/2026 17:21

You were all just hangry. Next time, have lunch 30 mins earlier.

It's a reference to characters in "Les Miserables" Naurrr

Edited

I know nothing about that show apart from the title, so now I get why I can't understand what OP was talking about 😁

Kokonimater · 04/08/2026 17:12

Oh dear.
4 adults and two children.
it sounds like you’re not enjoying motherhood.
it sounds like there is more going on for you than this.

What does find a nice river mean?

It's a thing outdoors, where people go sometimes to relax, gain perspective, or simply float away.

Cheers, the OP has now clarified she meant she wants the poster she was replying to to throw themselves into a river.
I think. Whatever this means 'Inspector Javert threw himself into the Seine after hunting down Valjean for years' ?

HideousKinky · 04/08/2026 17:07

This seems like a non-event - you left your children with their dad for a few minutes while you went outside because you'd had enough of their bickering.
Something I'm sure we've all done!

pastadish · 04/08/2026 16:58

Even though some people may like to present themselves as mothers/parents of the decade, we have all been here it happens and there will be many more times you’ll leave them to it and take some time for yourself.
But it’s one meal on one day it doesn’t mean anything. Your kids are 5 and 3 the won’t behave like adults because they aren’t adults.

I know you are just replying … many times!

If you speak to me directly, I am polite, I reply.

I was asking several times until you did finally reply, that is true. WHO was with the children is relevant.

watchthetv · 04/08/2026 16:55

theneighboureatmysalad · 04/08/2026 16:55

chill

I was just pointing out no one could reply without the details.
Surely you can see that it's not the same at all, if you leave a 3 and 5 year old behind, or if you just leave them with their dad. It's you who is obsessed by not giving the details, it's your thread, why wouldn't you give them?

Why are you having a go at me? There are still posters replying who haven't seen the kids were with their own dad because that crucial detail was buried on page 3 or 4😂

I don't think kids of those ages would be enjoyable company in a restaurant anyway, don't go next time, their dad and grandparents can have time with them.

Inspector Javert threw himself into the Seine after hunting down Valjean for years.

It was a kids restaurant, play area and cinema.

3 adults v 2 kids.

No problem.

As long as the kids didn't wander off into the woods and make rudimentary bows and arrows and hunt the wildlife. 🤷🏻‍♀️

🍷💐

Some days I'd have loved it if my kids had done that. Let them squabble over who gets to eat the squirrel vs the badger.

theneighboureatmysalad · 04/08/2026 16:43

Anyahyacinth · 04/08/2026 16:13

Well that's simple because OP wanted advice and not a pile on

If you don't mention that you simply left the kids with their own dad, you can't expect very relevant advice!

theneighboureatmysalad · 04/08/2026 16:43

Boomer55 · 04/08/2026 16:20

Your kids are your problem. You should not have left others to deal with them really.

Others, no
their dad? He's not being left with his kids, they're just his kids.

It took a while to get it from the OP, but the kids were with their DAD. Non issue.
Does he have a meltdown if he leaves the kids to his wife? No? didn't think so.
