My Pet Peeve- birthday "chapters" whats yours

JadoreLeFromage · 04/08/2026 12:44

Am I being unreasonable (AIBU)?

I KNOW this is one of those things that mean nothing in the grand scheme of things, but it really "irks" me.

When people say/write in cards/post on social media "Chapter 40" at their 40th birthdays (or whatever age).

The day you turn 40, you are now in chapter 41!

You are not entering chapter 40; you entered that at 39. 🙄

Why does this annoy me so much? 😅

Same when people write "draws" instead of "drawers." Like nails on a blackboard.

  1. AIBU?
  2. Share your pet peeves, please!!

I borrowed to someone
Making core memories
Legends
Effusive expressions if how much you love your hubby, bubba or fur baby . 😡. I am embarrassed for them .

JoshLymanSwagger · 04/08/2026 16:49

I thought "chapters" were either biblical or the Hells Angels. 🤔

I'm pleased for everyone who hasn't seen it firsthand. For those saying "adjust algorithms," unfortunately, these are people whom I have known and have on Facebook. It's time to just switch off social media, though, in all honesty.

I have just googled it and found that even etsy sellers are at it

It just makes me think of US American Chapter 13 bankruptcy provisions. Not quite the imagery you want for a borthday.

Now ubiquitous: we no longer get nor take, we only GRAB.

eurrgh

Yes!! The same people who ‘chuck’ things in the oven, and ‘throw’ on an outfit.

nomas · 04/08/2026 16:45

WearingBeautifulShoes · 04/08/2026 15:51

Christ, this may be the worst one yet. What does it even mean?!

Probably posted by people who call themselves 'mama bear' or 'tiger mum'.

TodoRonnieRonRon · 04/08/2026 16:42

Never heard the ‘chapters’ thing but mine is ‘ could of’ instead of ‘ could have’. Also when did people start saying to someone serving them ‘ could I get’ instead of ‘ could I have’? Also chimdey, hospical, skelington etc. I’m going for a lie down now.

BauhausOfEliott · 04/08/2026 16:37

I've never seen the chapter thing but I'm finding it quite an interesting pet peeve for that very reason - because one of my own pet peeves is when someone asks for pet peeves and everyone replies with the same old things every time.

I mean, I'm pretty sure everybody knows that a lot of people find the 'making memories' thing annoying, at this point, because it's been complained about on Mumsnet and everywhere else for about a decade. Same with 'Ooh, I hate it when someone says 'holibobs' and 'hubby'' - yes, everyone does unless they use those words themselves; that's not an original observation.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 04/08/2026 16:37

Pronouns. The incorrect use of “myself” and “yourself” is always mentioned but also: “her and her husband” and “they invited my husband and I” make me want to scream.

hourspassed · 04/08/2026 16:29

Cringey holiday photos with the caption ...

Summer Lovin' 😬

Sauceandwhizz · 04/08/2026 16:27

I hate the way people talk about cooking.

Bung it in the oven. Shove it on a tray. Whack it on the hob. Throw it all in.

Why? Why not just use the normal words that describe what you're actually doing? Why all the bunging and shoving and whacking? Why is it so hard to say, 'Cook/bake/roast it in the oven'?

willitevergetwarm · 04/08/2026 16:22

chester draws - instead of a chest of drawers
carnt - instead of cannot

Culpeper · 04/08/2026 16:22

I’ve never seen the ‘chapters’ thing, but agree it’s very wanky.

What annoys me hugely about birthday announcements on social media is when people say ‘another trip around the sun’ or something similarly banal.

I also hate this SM affectation of assigning ‘she/her’ to bloody everything. A new dress, a bag, shoes, jewellery…I even saw someone preparing a side of beef yesterday and declaring ‘look at her!’ when it was done, it is SO annoying.

DonnyDoris · 04/08/2026 16:21

A new one that's popped up on local traffic reporting - where there's a queue it now has a "get through" - eg, the A1 is busy at junction 38 with a get through of 30 minutes. Unbelievably irritating 😡

This is why I unfollowed my SIL on Facebook because my brother is an absolute bell end. All the personalised teddies and outlet Michael Kors bags won't make up for his aggressive demeanor and coke habit love.

This made me laugh and love your user name 😂

SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite · 04/08/2026 16:18

AmyDudley · 04/08/2026 15:21

Oh and referring to plural items of clothing in the singular. 'She is wearing a linen trouser with a beige sandal' - so half dressed then.

This made me laugh 😂

FeliciaFancybottom · 04/08/2026 16:13

Grown women who refer to themselves as girlies, boak.

AliceDownTheRabbitHole · 04/08/2026 16:11

When people say they’ve ‘done’ places. No, you’ve been to them. It’s usually the same people who make their gap-year in Asia their entire personality

FatherDickByrneV · 04/08/2026 16:08

Noshowlomo · 04/08/2026 15:50

Making memories 😬😬😬😬

Also, I’ve seen two instagram accounts with this- “if they throw me to the wolves, I’ll return leading the pack” - in their bio.

Feck off with ya

Jesus Christ. This may have just unseated "It's not about waiting for the storm to pass it's about learning to dance in the rain." as my most hated, wanky, bullshit and bollocks phrases ever. 😆

And a smokey eye!

I agree with all of this. When someone mentions a 'red lip', I wonder which lip they have decided to paint red.

I'm also cackling now at the thought of this style guru limping around half dressed with a single smokey eye and one red lip

Ooh, the fact that you can add gems for sparkle makes this even better 💖✨

I have never seen anyway say or do those.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 04/08/2026 15:39

I’ve never seen the chapters thing, but agree it sounds annoying.

I hate when people post on Facebook “the boy done good”. It would be annoying whatever he’d done, but it’s even more annoying because generally it’s just that their completely useless husband has managed to buy a bunch of flowers, or cook a very underwhelming looking meal. She’s doesn’t get public praise for cooking every other bloody night.

This is why I unfollowed my SIL on Facebook because my brother is an absolute bell end. All the personalised teddies and outlet Michael Kors bags won't make up for his aggressive demeanor and coke habit love.

I just generally hate "internet speak".

For example -
Hey guys! I curated this outfit from some of my favourite pieces and I'm literally deceased. It's giving icon. I'm heading out to grab a matcha and film some content now.
