This is just a ridiculous defence.

Prime Suspect creator Lynda La Plante, 83, fears writing career is over as she gets driving ban for five speeding offences

It’s only 6 months. Quite ridiculous. Why can’t she walk the dog out of the front door. And sorry there are other ways to talk to people plus writing you don’t need to leave the house.

CoffeeCantata · 04/08/2026 06:55

I agree. It reminds me a bit of Carla Lane in her late 70s moaning about the BBC not commissioning her work any more.

Come on, woman - you had a great innings - let someone else have a chance!

Some people think they have a sacred right to remain at the top forever.

WhistlerKimono · 04/08/2026 07:21

For heaven’s sake, Lynda, get a taxi or use public to meet criminals and walk the dog locally.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 04/08/2026 08:17

Completely agree OP

Aiming4Optimistic · 04/08/2026 10:57

It's pathetic the excuses people make as to why they shouldn't get a ban.
I lost respect for her when I saw that. Here's a thought - if you want to keep driving, maybe obey the speed limits!

CountessBinface · 04/08/2026 11:19

Utterly pathetic. Why does she need a car to walk a dog?

BauhausOfEliott · 04/08/2026 12:49

I mean, she knows full well that's a ridiculous excuse. She was just trying it on, on the desperate off-chance that it might work. Idiotic of her.

Also, she's a very wealthy 83-year-old and absolutely isn't going to end up on the breadline if she doesn't write another book. Laughably absurd 'defence'.

Rosiecloud · 04/08/2026 12:51

And she already has 9 points on her licence for speeding, so never learnt her lesson. It sounds like she lives next to Richmond park which is massive, just go there.

Livpool · 04/08/2026 14:05

it said on the news I read that it wasn’t her first offence either. The entitlement is stifling

Apparently, despite its huge size, its over run with joggers and deer.

And the poor, helpless little thing is 'trying' to train the massive fucking Wolfhound not to chase people (or presumably get herself a conviction for it killing deer).

Maybe she could, I don't know, try not having a massive fucking dog that isn't safe around people or wild animals/livestock or pay somebody to pick it up and walk it? she could have a nice sitdown and write some more crime fetishising derivative shite stories whilst he's out?

Sharedkeysonewhereelse · 04/08/2026 15:34

Absolutely love her writing.

I have a feeling given how many books she has written and the success she has in tv drama that she has a few quid handy and can probably afford a couple of uber pets or a driver if necessary whilst on a driving ban.

Love her writing but do think this ‘plee ’ sounds a bit lame!

TonTonMacoute · 04/08/2026 15:38

I agrée, she's being utterly ridiculous.

Doesn't matter that the speeds are slow - and it is quite hard to drive modern cars that slowly - that's the speed limit and she's broken it five times.

No sympathy, daft woman.

Tsham · 04/08/2026 15:39

Oh dear, what a ridiculous defence. That said, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/08/2026 15:42

so she's threatened a temper tantrum if she's not allowed to continue flouting the law?

if you ban me from driving I'll close up my company and sack 4 people because I'm a spoilt brat!

this would deter me from putting a single penny more into her bank account

CountessBinface · 04/08/2026 16:02

What a shame that the whole of London is totally barren of public transport.

TheCurious0range · 04/08/2026 22:01

DH used to work with her, she wasn't particularly pleasant

nomas · 04/08/2026 22:24

It’s the ‘Don’t you know who I am?’ defence.

Ahead of her court hearing, La Plante complained about “very confusing” road signs on the A308 in Kingston-upon-Thames

I have to agree here though, Kingston has some very poor road signage especially near the high street, but not for speed limits, those are fine.
