Do you have a best friend?

do you have a proper best friend as an adult? Or a proper group of best friends?
I hear people talk about their best friends all the time and I’m so jealous I don’t have that one person to properly connect with as a friend.

Yes, been friends for about 40 years. She's gorgeous.

notsureofname · 04/08/2026 00:07

Have group of 6 secondary schoolfriends for 60 years and 1 best friend from primary school for 66 years. We meet up approx every 3 months.

HollyhocksandPeons · 04/08/2026 00:05

Have friends, but not one 'best friend'. I travelled a lot, went to uni abroad before Internet, lost touch with school mates, then parents moved, then I settled miles and miles away, so had to make friends over and over again. Not the same.

HundredMilesAnHour · 04/08/2026 00:02

Yes I do. We’ve been best friends since age 5 and now 51 (!) years later, we’re still there for each other despite living 250 miles apart.

Gooseling · 04/08/2026 00:00

Yes.

We are early 30’s.

Met during first year of secondary school. She’s one of the only people I can truly trust in life and can confide in about anything.

We go on holidays together, trips, festivals. We are chalk and cheese but I think that’s why we gel so well. I’d be lost without her.

Swissmeringue · 03/08/2026 23:55

Yes I have a best friend. If I ever murder DH she would help me bury the body and vice versa. We went to uni together and have been emotionally inseparable ever since, even if we only actually see each other once every couple of months. I have a couple of long term friendship groups and a few others which are lovely, but transient, school mums etc.

I do feel very lucky to have someone I can be my absolute 100% worst and best self around with absolutely no filter or judgement. Even DH judges me sometimes but she doesn't. 😂

CypressMoon · 03/08/2026 23:51

No. I have may people I love spending time with and a couple of people I might turn to for advice. But not one single friend who stands out above all others.

Justonegirl · 03/08/2026 23:46

Those of you saying you have two best friends (or more), surely the point is you can only have one? Hence they're your best friend.

DustyBins · 03/08/2026 23:42

I have a few different groups of friends and am closer to some people more than others but not one "best friend". My dh's sister has a supposed BFF and they are always calling each other "bestie" or "my ride or die" on fb but to us she says she's actually a nightmare! I find it rather superficial and two-faced tbh.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 03/08/2026 23:41

No, although my husband really is my best friend. I’ve accepted that in this life, I’m blessed in so many ways but friendships just aren’t it. You can’t have it all I guess. I do have friends, but not a ‘best friend’.

Hayley1256 · 03/08/2026 23:37

Yes, met her in my late teens. I don't have a huge close friendship group though. I'm very sociable but like to do my own thing with DP and family. We are also part of quite a big social group from our area so that's nice and is very mixed ages.

DramaAlpaca · 03/08/2026 23:36

No. I don't feel the need for one.

TwoBagsOfCompost · 03/08/2026 23:35

I do have a best friend, she has four legs and is very fluffy ❤️

ThingsCouldBeEasier · 03/08/2026 23:35

I did have one for maybe 8 or 9 years, but no other best friend in the last 27 years. We've lost touch now due to different circumstances.

LifeOfAShowgirl13 · 03/08/2026 23:33

Yes. I did terribly in keeping friends from school and uni but have an oldest best friend who I have known since I was uni age (not at uni together though) and a best best friend who I speak to every day without fail who I met through work about 10 years ago. I’m 40ish now. I feel very lucky, they are all I need.

girljulian · 03/08/2026 23:33

Yes I do.

bellventrico · 03/08/2026 23:31

I'm very lucky 2 amazing love at first sight best friends / one from school - 50 years, another from uni - 44 years. I also have 2 brilliant female friends and 1 male from work dating back 34 years

waitinginwonderland · 03/08/2026 23:23

Yes, I’m 36 and she’s been my best friend since we were 4. Small circle of good friends, I value quality not quantity, but having a lifelong best friend has been amazing.

minimuffs2651 · 03/08/2026 23:08

I have good friends but i don't think they're exclusive to just me! I need different friends for different interests. So no "best" friend per se but that's ok. I do admire when people do have their one and only, and assume you're not counting DH's.

Silverbirchleaf · 03/08/2026 23:05

No, sadly.

SparklyBrickViper · 03/08/2026 23:03

Nope.

I would probably say I have more acquaintances than friends now as well.

leadsalone · 03/08/2026 22:59

Yes. We’ve been best friends for 40 years too - ever since we met at school. I have a small handful of other close friends but my best friend is like my sister. We don’t see each other very often as we lived miles apart but we’re in touch a couple of times a week usually.

Enigma54 · 03/08/2026 22:57

No. She ditched me when I was diagnosed with my second incurable cancer.

JustGiveMeReason · 03/08/2026 22:54

I really dislike the term "best friend" as it implies, by default that other friends are somehow 'less' in some way.

I do have a few really good friends from different parts of my life, and, as a pp said, with different degrees of contact.

Depending on how you define 'best friend', I have friends that I met when we started secondary school (so 50 odd years ago), and a couple of friends I still see who I have known from an even younger age. But none of them are people I see really often. I have a friend that I see about twice a week, but we only met 4 years ago. Then several from somewhere in between. I wouldn't rank any of them as being 'better' than the others though. They are all good friends that I love dearly and would miss terribly if anything happened to them.

NotRightNowPlease · 03/08/2026 22:49

I'm lucky enough to have 2, one I've known since 6 and we facetime most days, 37 years later. Another that I've known since I was 9, we talk sporadically but know we're there if needed.

It's not the be all and end all though, I have lots of new friendships too. I'm sure you also do xx
