Job market is awful

Flowerpowerz · 03/08/2026 19:34

I work in pharma (general field) and the job market is horrendous. I’m seeing a huge trend towards AI which is not surprising. Perhaps more concerning is the massive uptick of offshore partners aka shipping work out to India because they are cheaper than people in the uk and USA. I have several friends in several related companies (technology, IT, coding) that have lost jobs due to this. They are being expected to share knowledge with their Indian colleagues before their redundancy kicks in.

I have honestly never known it so bad. My linked in is a sea of “open to work”

is it just me or has anyone else noticed these trends? It’s worse than ever

The people on Planet Earth.

The current Government control systems were formed when men were in power.

We need to get more women in power - to get a better balance for people on the planet. Women are naturally more empathetic as we have the ability to sustain another body in our bodies.

When it is mainly men in power - we get lack of empathy, cruelty and destruction in the world

We eventually need to have a system where more power is in each person, not just in a few people in government who then misuse the power - but it will take time

Young women in the UK, as a group, are disproportionately likely to hold views which, imho, are incredibly destructive to women and society, they are highly intolerant of difference, which subsume individual thinking into group orthodoxy with punishment of dissenters. I am dreading these young women gaining power if they maintain these views. All polls show they are going in a different direction to all other groups in society in their political thinking. And not in a good way, in my opinion.

Why would anyone get a job, given how stressful the world of work is? Who would do jobs like nurses, doctors, fire brigade, police, army etc. Who would get up at 5 to start work at 6 as an emergency worker?

I would always have a job, regardless of universal income

Everywhere.

Just looking at Ireland for example. Ireland has 163,000 empty houses.

The U.K has 700,000 empty houses.

People should also be encouraged to buy cheaper static mobile homes or alternative ways of living like van life. (convert and sleep in a van)

People are constantly being told that they must get huge mortgages/pay huge rent - to get everyone under pressure

Edited

Haha, no.
Living in a van would be like those Chinese coffin apartments to me.
Home should be somewhere you can stretch out and relax... not just a literal bed space with a bit extra for your belongings.

Anyone who wants to have more that just basic UBI to live on.
Obviously.

Yeah - that's not UBI. As soon as you start giving top-ups for housing, children etc it's no longer UBI - it's just UC. The idea is to give a very basic standard of living (similar to state pension) for everyone so that those who cannot (or will not) work, at least are not destitute. Because it isn't means tested (everyone over the age of 18 gets it) it removes a huge administrative cost. And it also removes complexity in the tax system as in most proposals it comes with flat rate income tax.

There is no way a UBI could cover rent.
The only possible way to introduce UBI would be to make it a very basic standard (as you say), i.e. each adult would get the current single person's adult rate of Universal Credit - because according to logic that is currently considered enough to meet an adult's needs.
But it is not enough to afford rent or children, so there are separate payments for these. Ideally there would be no private rental sector to speak of, everyone would be offered LA or HA social housing to rent, and UBI would cover this rent so no need for separate HB, but we don't live in such a world.

There is no logical reason that UBI has to go hand-in-hand with a flat rate of income tax. That just benefits those who have high incomes. If anything, there would need to be more income tax bands at the higher levels to pay for UBI

But given that housing costs are so high, and it needs to support families as well as individuals, it would need to be quite a lot of money to meet a basic standand of living. That everyone would get. I don't see how it could work.

there is no need for earth to be as difficult as it is. there is more than enough housing for everyone. people can live in static caravans rent free.

Digerydont · 04/08/2026 15:11

Farmers will often let people live in a van in a corner of a field providing they don't make a mess, have fires and if they help out on the farm, pick crops etc. You can do this abroad as well, doesn't even have to be a farm. There's a website, but I can't remember the name of it. It advertises for people to help out and they'll let you stay for free. You might be needed for a small building project, decorating, a big clean up, animal care, pet sitting or help with crops.

There are students doing it now too. I was watching a news story about a student who was living in his van all through his university years

I don't know how I'd manage to hold down a job in a van. We've had small boats gone away for a week. There's limited space, no flushing toilet, nowhere to shower, no space to hang work clothes let alone wash them unless we called in at a marina where they have washing machines and showering facilities. No way could we hold down a job.

There are other ways of living.

Yet we are all so conditioned to live the same high pressure way, that we are afraid to live any other way.

People who live in vans are still often seen as weird and hippy, when actually it makes a lot of sense.

So very true! My daughter is a junior designer. She just had the horrible experience of a small company inviting her for a job interview in order to steal her ideas but not actually employ her.

Depends what kind of designer she is, @Palomiino - but if it’s software / screens / user interfaces, tell her to contact Scrumconnect. They’re hiring for a junior designer now x

Housing benefit and higher rate disability benefits would have to remain in place. There may also be a need to keep UC payments for children

If you are keeping housing benefits, disability benefits and family related benefits under UBI then you are keeping nearly all of the benefits structure and associated staff, AND have the cost of paying UBI to those who currently do not get it as their savings are too high (and you only need a few K in savings to start having benefits reduced) or their partner's income is too high.

It sounds like an expensive policy!!

Maybe he likes dobermans (great dogs, very loyal).

Maybe he likes to look tough.

Maybe he wants to deter thieves from nicking his van.

The easiest way to get the answer to your question would be to ask the actual window cleaner why he has two dobermans in his van.

I suspect he can leave them at home as they would rip his house/flat to shreds.

I’m also glad I have one dc who I will hopefully be able to help if needed. She’s also doing two languages, has a EU passport and hopes to live in Spain for a time when she’s older.

Spain isn't going to be immune from AI and other factors affecting the job market.

As I said above, wages there are low and unemployment is high. That's why there are tons of young Spanish people moving abroad to find better job opportunities.

AI is going to wreck havoc on jobs all over the world, not just in Britain.
