Furious at ds work dismissal

This is more has my 19 year old ds employers been unreasonable. He's just been sacked for being unreliable. For context - he accepted a new job about a month ago. He informed them of where he lives which is about a forty minute train journey away. He is a few minutes late everyday because of the trains and they said they were ok with it. He's just come off holiday (which he informed them of) and went back today. He was sent an email before today telling him to get an earlier train so he's on time. Fair enough, so he did and would've continued doing. At 9 he was called into a meeting to tell him his contracts been terminated for unreliability. He was only informed of getting an earlier train from today, so how can they dismiss him like this? If he continued to get the later train and continued being late then I'd understand but they've not even given him a chance. I'm absolutely furious. And to add insult to injury he still had to pay for his waste of time and money train fare this morning.

No I don't, Ive read hours of comments saying he deserved it, he's a Muppet, I'm a useless parent an on and on

I understand that you are upset and gutted for your son. I would be as well at first. And then I would start to ask myself why they let him go. Who told him it was fine to be late everyday? His boss or another employee? If he already hated the job after such a short time maybe it wasn't the end of the world that he got fired?

Good hope I get banned!!!

I know Mumsnet can be harsh at times but no-one would ever wish any harm on anyone, especially not what you said.

What i don't understand is why he didn't get the earlier train to begin with to get him there on time.

Honesty @OneGreyBiscuit, if my DC lost a job because they didn’t understand that being five minutes late everyday was not acceptable, I would be saying exactly what has been said in this thread to them.

I have a niece who is really clever, works in tech, lost one of her first jobs at the Apple Store in central London because she was always just a little bit late. She still struggles with punctuality and aunty W, still tells her off.

No one is wishing you or your DS ill, but a bit of a reality check will not do him any harm.

Strawberrydelight78 · 03/08/2026 21:22

So they told him to get an earlier train to prove their point. That he could get there earlier if he bothered to get an earlier train.

Maureenwasacat · 03/08/2026 21:20

It's a bit shit they got him in for that but maybe he had equipment they needed back?

Very likely they weren't overly happy with the quality of his work and this was an easy issue to use to fire him. Again shit because he would be able to use any feedback to improve in future roles.

He told me that they were ok with him being a few minutes late as they were fully aware he gets the train, if they had a problem, they should've told him the first week and not say it was ok.

And this is where you should have told him that whether he thinks they are ok with it or not, it will make a terrible impression and he shouldn’t even have asked the question, as an adult in the workplace he had to sort his life out to get there on time. They may well have meant they can be understanding if he is five minutes late one day a month due to a train running late. The chances they said “you are contracted to start at 9am but it’s fine to only arrive at 9:10am EVERY DAY because you are deliberately choosing to take a train that (a) leaves you no margin for error if there is a small delay and (b) which very often has a small delay” is basically 0. I get that a naive 19 year old in his first job might have thought that’s what they meant, but you as the adult should have set him straight.

I won't be so harsh but the only thing I will say is, I can't honestly believe you're surprised and I don't understand why you're angry

You can't be late to work every day without consequences

I wouldn't say he deserved it either. It's just a learning experience. He won't do that in his next job now will he.

He did deserve it.

What is so hard to understand?

He'll need to find another job, and it's as simple as that.

No one here is wishing death upon him. What an odd statement to make.

Someone else might know better but I think he needs to call ACAS and ask for advice.

Acas will tell her he worked there for the sum total, of five minutes and he has no rights accordingly.

Given that he was late to work every single day and that could have been solved by getting an earlier train.I am not surprised they dismissed him.

Jesus fancy being furious because you were sacked for being late to work every day.

OP, I imagine that if your DS was a brilliant hire, they'd have overlooked his tardiness. If they've terminated his employment during probation, it's more likely he wasn't up to the job and/or didn't meet their expectations of him. They're just using his continued lateness as a reason

For those citing he took a pre-booked holiday during his probation, that is a red herring and has zero influence on his termination of employment.

The bottom line, for whatever reason or reasons, his employers decided he wasn't right for the role. That's the takeaway from this, and yes, his inability to get to work on time or even early was a factor, but probably not the only one.

BlueFahrenheit · 03/08/2026 21:10

OneGreyBiscuit · 03/08/2026 21:02

What the holiday they knew about and still took him on, is that what you mean?

Even more reason for him to be punctual.

I cannot decipher whether you are a troll or just dim.

If he already had holiday commitments and told them about that at interview, they would likely have honoured that. But if his employment came to an end before he had accrued the amount of time off he actually had, then that will be deducted from his final payment.

ThreadGuardDog · 03/08/2026 21:05

JustAnotherWhinger · 03/08/2026 20:57

He’s very unlikely to actually receive any pay in lieu of notice when he’s been there around a month and had at least a weeks holiday.

Depending on payday cut off he could end up owing money back

Agree. He’s not entitled to pay in lieu of notice - he’s been sacked with immediate effect. What he gets will depend on how often he was due to be paid and the number of weeks in hand he was required to work. Any holiday time not accrued will be deducted.

Neuronimo · 03/08/2026 21:04

I hope that your Ds is ok OP and not too upset. I should think that going out into the work place is a culture shock for a lot of us. In the job I mentioned upthread, I'd lose 40 minutes at the start of the day and often the boss would deliberately make me miss the train home, by making me stay unpaid for an extra ten minutes at the end of the day. The boss was surprised when I left after a short time there.

I'm sure that he will will find his way. It is unfortunate that they didn't give him a warning though. That dose seem harsh!

OneGreyBiscuit · 03/08/2026 21:02

Minasama · 03/08/2026 20:55

It sounds like you may not have a professional job, OP, or are so senior that the usual rules no longer apply but you’ve forgotten what it’s like for juniors?

At these low levels, you need to be on time, every day, not take holiday during probation, abide by the dress code, obey all policies. The thing is, there are lots of people and not so many jobs, so employers can pick and choose. And they do!

What the holiday they knew about and still took him on, is that what you mean?

I think to be honest they wete just looking to get rid of someone and your son was in the wrong place at the wrong time. They cam get rid of anyone for any or no reason (barring discrimination) this early itheor contract. He still needs psy in lieu of notice though assuming he isn't on zero hours

Edited
