I’ve got all these holiday toiletries but still somehow have nothing!

I go away in three weeks. I like to take everything away with me because the last thing I want to be doing is running to a pharmacy to grab paracetamol or something.

I have somehow accumulated all of this during the last couple of months but also somehow have nothing. No meds or anything like that.

Both airports have the 2L rule as opposed to the 100ml.

AIBU to still feel entirely lost?!

Why is everyone obsessed with first aid kits and taking multiple meds?

Who says people are obsessed? It helps to be prepared, so if you get a headache/stomach ache/itchy bites/blister or whatever, you can treat it promptly instead of waiting until morning and finding a chemist or supermarket. I don't want to be having a miserable night with a headachy child when I can fix it then and there!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 03/08/2026 13:10

My list is…

Cleanser, acid toner, serum, moisturiser, face spf, face tanning drops (I don’t tan at all, but burn easily so am always lathered in factor 50).

Bar soap, body moisturiser, sun cream, aloe Vera type after sun. Shampoo, conditioner, hair product.

paracetemol, ibuprofen, antihistamines, bite cream, roll on jungle formula, blister plasters, compeed stick. I know I can buy these abroad but I like to have them on hand when I need them. I went somewhere without bluster plasters recently and had to walk for ages to find some which was a painful error.

Make up - tends to be a bit pared back on holiday, cc cream rather than foundation etc.

i either buy travel sized versions of products or decant stuff into mini pots I have bought.

Bjorkdidit · 03/08/2026 13:11

Plus in a lot of European countries, supermarkets don't sell painkillers etc, you need to go to a pharmacy, and unless you find the one on the emergency rota, they're shut between Saturday lunchtime and Monday morning.

And simple painkillers are a few euro instead of about 50 p. So seeing as they weigh nothing, it makes sense to take a pack with you.

MissBridgetJones · 03/08/2026 12:46

Looks like my travel toiletries! Get rid of the boxes. If you split it down into categories, skincare, first aid, sunscreen it’s not that much!

Keep the boxes, you may need them depending on where you travel. Many countires advise you to keep medicines in there original packaging.

Networksecurity · 03/08/2026 13:14

This is what I take

Solid shampoo bar (hair & body)
Toothbrush
Tooth paste or tooth tablets
Solid deoderant
Blister plasters
Antihistamine tablet
Anadin
Stomach upset tablets
Travel insurance
Sometimes small scissors
Sun cream

Anything else can be bought while away

pkt3chgirl · 03/08/2026 13:17

Get a clear plastic box (or bag) and add tablets, medication, plasters - your mini first aid kit as you will. Take them out of boxes.

put your mini toiletry’s to carry on the plane in about bag and pack whatever else you are taking into the suitcase. I bought the July toiletry bag that has a clear case and put toothbrush, minis and toothpaste in that to carry, the rest in the luggage and I always have a mini first aid kit.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 03/08/2026 13:18

I take
Diorreah tablets
Sudocream or germalene for bites
Plasters
Antihistamines
Paracetamol
Ibuprofen
Indigestion tablets.
Then toiletries too.

@everylittlethingis I fully recommend the packpoint app that helps you create packing lists.

What did we do before apps??!!

Bloody hell heard it all, an app to create a packing list

everylittlethingis · 03/08/2026 13:18

Marroon · 03/08/2026 13:08

Why do you need 4 full suncream and 2 full size body moisturisers? Two different blister blaster packs? It’s all just overkill

I don’t have 2 full body moisturisers, I have 2 body spfs and 2 for my face

I think I need to sit down and do this. I travel alone so if I get hit by an awful headache one day, there’s nobody else to run out for me. That’s why I like to be as prepared as possible, but I always end up a little overwhelmed!

OP posts:
Roseonthebalcony · 03/08/2026 13:20

Weird post! Surely you just think what would I use in a week at home and take that?

And then any meds/ first aid stuff for just in case scenarios. It’s not that deep.

everylittlethingis · 03/08/2026 13:20

Imightbeinthewronghere · 03/08/2026 13:19

I don’t have 2 full body moisturisers. Learn to read.

Yes, I use a lot of suncream anyway and will be outdoors for the entire holiday, pretty much.

I take:

face wash
shampoo
conditioner
mini hair spray
hair mousse
face sunscreen
body sunscreen
hand cream
nail treatment (because for once I have time to look after my nails and I bite them less when I'm not stuck at a desk)
plasters
deoderant
toothpaste
painkillers if I remember, but I rarely use them anyway

you've got a big bottle and a tube of Aveeno, that's body moisturiser and it lasts for months, let alone 12 days!

Roseonthebalcony · 03/08/2026 13:26

Imightbeinthewronghere · 03/08/2026 13:01

Why is everyone obsessed with first aid kits and taking multiple meds?

It’s sensible not obsessed. Meds and first aid kits are not heavy at all and save a trip to the pharmacy.

I have had hay fever in Greece but not at home so now I take antihistamines just in case. Also get bitten by mozzies in some countries but not others.
My son needed calpol in Morocco but no pharmacy for miles in the middle of the night.
Son has been ill abroad so always take a thermometer.
I’ve had food poisoning but needed to travel that day so Imodium helped even though I’d avoid taking it at home.
Plasters for obvious reasons.

Annocrates · 03/08/2026 13:31

Imightbeinthewronghere · 03/08/2026 13:21

Did you have any room for clothes?

Plenty, people forget that it's all travel sized and you end up using up several items by the end of holiday.
I always take a comprehensive first aid kit as my immunity is compromised due to chronic illness and I tend to get unwell more often than your regular traveler.
@everylittlethingis I also travelled alone but it might make a difference that I flew with BA as they are really generous with their hand luggage weight limits.

YourTidyGreyRobin · 03/08/2026 13:33

Make a list! It's not rocket science.

Imightbeinthewronghere · 03/08/2026 13:35

Can you not tell if he isn't well without a thermometer?

Annocrates · 03/08/2026 13:35

Oh and @everylittlethingis , I would recommend electrolytes powder sachets that you can add to water to stay hydrated in the heat, especially if you plan to be out and about all day.
