Should personalised Christmas stockings be M & D for mummy and daddy, or their actual initials?

I think M & D

DH thinks actual initials of our names.

Kids are aged 1 and 4!

And how old were your children when they realised that? Still believing in Father Christmas?

🙄

Well, their grandparents and their uncles and cousins didn't call me Mummy in the presence of my children, they called me Otter. So it was pretty obvious early on.

I think after around 2 1/2 they knew what my name was. Definitely around 20 months they assumed when any kid shouted Mummy! I was supposed to answer.

I'm not having a stocking for 20 years with "Mummy" on it when my kids know before their three that I have an actual name.

MyLeftArmpit · 04/08/2026 15:34

My mum’s still got the cushion I made for her that’s proudly got ‘M’ for mummy stitched on it in sequins 😂 Funnily enough, my son made her a keyring at school and it’s got ‘G’ for Grandma on it. Must run in the family 🤷‍♀️

Saltysweetspicy · 04/08/2026 15:31

Your names. I made the mistake of getting Mum and Dad for DH when the kids were little. Now I look at them and think 1. cringe 2. i don't want to be mum and dad when they leave home, i want to be (my name)!

WhatAMarvelousTune · 04/08/2026 15:23

I think it doesn’t matter at all. And may differ between families due to what the names are eg if you have a child called “Mary” you might want to avoid M on mum’s stocking. But if you have a parent called Alice and a child called Alex, it would make sense to go for M for the mum’s stocking, rather than having two with A.

Initials. Mum is not my real name.

Team your own initials here.

Thank you though to all the people who pointed out it's August, none of the rest of us own calendars so makes keeping up with the months very difficult. Is it worth pointing out the word Christmas was in the thread title and if you're uninterested in talking about xmas any month other than December you didn't need to click and then subsequently comment? Probably not.

DoAWheelie · 04/08/2026 15:08

Do real initials, you want something you can use forever and the kids won't always be at home.

Though this has just reminded me of one Christmas when I had to wrap everything twice. It was a small celebration, just me and my OH, my parents and my step dad. I wrapped in two sessions, doing stuff for my parents on day one and the rest on day two.

I didn't have any labels so I got a fell pen and wrote an M or D on the corner of each pack for my mum and dad. The next day, fully forgetting what I had done the night before, I tagged the presents for my OH and step dad after their initials - which just happened to be M and D.

On day three I realised what I'd done and had to open them all back up to figure out what was whose, but the paper was so thin and crap it all tore no matter how careful I was. I ended up redoing the whole pile using full first names only.

Scarlettpixie · 04/08/2026 15:01

There is a whole board for people who want to talk about Christmas in August!

Sweet Jesus Christ

He gets one too?

MysteryMachineRidesAgain · 04/08/2026 14:57

It wouldn’t have crossed my mind to put M and D.

Children get stockings from Father Christmas, not grown-ups. You are making a rod for your own back here.

Or modelling that everyone should get a present.

SevenPrettyPetals · 04/08/2026 14:20

Actual initials. My name isn’t Mum or Mummy, I call my children ‘darling’ or ‘sweetie’ but I wouldn’t put ‘D’ or ‘S’ on their stockings.
Also seeing as it’s my partner who fills my stocking (oo-er), I don’t really want mummy on it…

Sorry, didn’t realise this would cause a stir!

Stockings are decorative and stay above our fireplace in December.

You didn't realize that posting a about Christmas in an August heatwave not in the Christmas topic might be to say the least annoying to all the normal people who has the topic hidden?

Apart from anything else how one earth is this on your mind now, absolutely incomprehensible to me

Newsenmum · 04/08/2026 14:15

Unless it actually says the full words Mummy and Daddy Id do initials for names

Whatever allows you to spell out rude words with four stockings along the mantelpiece.

🤣

MinnieMountain · 04/08/2026 14:13

Report your thread and ask for it to be moved to the Christmas topic. Pretty please.

Kidsandhouse · 04/08/2026 13:59

But again, it's August...

UnintentionallyFabulous · 04/08/2026 12:48

The only adults I know with personalised stockings are PIL who have Mum and Dad.

Just make all the stockings for generic use

A bell on each & a deccoration

Then anyone can use them for 100+ years

ExtraOnions · 03/08/2026 12:37

Assuming you are only using them whilst they are little, M&D is fine.

This site is full of people who would give Scrooge a run for his money.

Rod for her own back? Yeah what a nightmare her and her DH are going to buy eachother a few extra presents!

ZanyMaker · 03/08/2026 12:33

Yes, YABU

Newusername0 · 03/08/2026 12:32

We chose our actual names. Kids are same age. Didn’t occur to me to do m and d, Santa knows my real name 😂
