I want to get Mounjaro for a month, to lose 3/4 stone-1 stone. Am I mad?

I'm post meno, mid-fifties. I train hard in the gym. I try really hard to watch what I eat and i'm really healthy and knowledgeable about food and nutrition. And yet. The weight has crept up. I'm about 3/4 stone heavier than I want to be.

It depresses the hell out of me.

I thought I'd try Mounjaro for a month. Get a reset.

Am I wrong for doing this?

Pretty much the same as @YeezyBreezy I used Mounjaro for four months and lost just under 3 stone in that time. Came completely off in December 2024 and am still half a stone lighter than when I stopped using it!

Total game-changer, I needed to lose the weight but I am short and have to eat under 1000 calories a day to lose weight. It's miserable and would have taken a year or two of a rigid diet. I'd never have done it.

I find maintaining easy - and far easier than losing weight!

This is why I’d looking to use it & lose a stone or so

Weight loss itself is so hard and feels nigh on impossible, even with restricting my daily calorie intake

Maintaining feels much more do-able, I just need help to get there in the first place!

Also being short (161cm) doesn’t help, a few extra kilos are very noticeable compared with a much taller person who can ‘carry’ it more easily

I wouldn't object to anyone trying MJ - I'm on it and it's changed my life. It's a fantastic tool for weight loss.
But it's a long-term treatment. Yes, you might lose a stone in the first month (I did!) but coming off it again after just one month means you are highly likely to put the weight back on pretty quickly.
I don't think it'll be the 'reset' you're looking for after one month - people often find their appetite comes back with vengeance when they stop. Tapering the dose off can be more helpful, but you will be on the lowest dose anyway.

Same. It just doesn't sound like a very practical plan.

No I really don't I'm not that vindictive, why on earth would anyone want that but it's not like there isn't historical precedence for modern medication being brought to market too swiftly.

But that's not what has happened, is it? The medication has been used for years to help control type 2 diabetes.

I suspect you know that.

aussiegonewrong · 06/08/2026 18:11

Go for it
I am very similar to you desperately wanted to lose a stone so I tried it last year and it took 3 pens over three months of 2.5 I too am very fit go to the gym all the time but a Breast cancer diagnosis and all the treatment meant i just couldn’t shift it
a year later have kept it off as I weigh myself daily and am pretty motivated now to stay this weight
I also just took an inch of my height and stuck out my stomach in the photos
no real side effects and it was just so easy to ignore the usual temptations

Quartzfairy · 06/08/2026 18:08

I expect it’ll take longer than a month. I’m on it as I have 1.5 stone to lose. In the first month I lost 5 pounds. I think the more you have to lose, the quicker it drops off. I also think it takes longer when you’re older (I’m a similar age to you)

Loads of people are using it to drop small amounts though so yanbu to try! It definitely makes it easier to eat less.

Secretbrumbride · 06/08/2026 17:47

I’m on day 17 of wegovy tablets (lowest dose) and have now lost 7 pounds. I have been exercising most days (walking, weights, treadmill) and with exercise my TDEE is around 2000kcals (I am short).

On the lowest dose I have managed to reduce my calories to around 1300-1400 a day with no big struggle - this is normally really quite hard when you’re exercising and hungry. I’m well chuft.

YeezyBreezy · 06/08/2026 15:37

I did it for 8 weeks back in early 2024 as I needed to lose 3st that had crept on at 1lb a month over 3 years.

I needed something to kickstart my weight loss and give me some quick, tangible results and I lost nearly 1st. I then maintained a strict diet and exercise regime and lost the remaining 2st over 4 months and I’ve maintained my weight on my own now for nearly 20 months.

I feel fantastic, I think it can be a great tool to help you change some bad habits and kickstart a longer term weight loss journey.

InfoSecInTheCity · 06/08/2026 15:28

It’s a lot easier to lose big quantities quickly as a very heavy person than as a lighter person because your BMR is higher. So if your TDEE is 3000 then by eating a diet of 2000 calories a day you have a 7000 calorie deficit in a week = several lbs lost on the scales when you add in the early days water weight loss.

As someone in the healthy BMI range now, my TDEE is 1840 so to lose 1 lb a week I’d need to eat under 1340 calories a day. If I wanted to lose several lbs a week I’d need to be on around the 800 calories a day range which is highly restrictive and a bit miserable and having done it in the past I know that within a week or so I’d feel like crap.

BalakayAARon · 03/08/2026 10:44

I lost a stone a month for the first 2 months, plus another stone by the fourth month. It's really not unusual. It then slowed and took me a year to lose the full 100lb to my goal.

You lost those huge amounts because you were 7 stone overweight to begin with. OP is 3/4 - 1 stone overweight so she wont lose at the rate you did.

3smallpups · 03/08/2026 19:55

I don’t think so
most people on the pill thread on here have lost 3 to 7 pounds in the first three weeks , st the lowest dose

But is it fat they lost? Or water weight that comes straight back?

Secretbrumbride · 04/08/2026 12:52

Onefairfish · 04/08/2026 12:39

I lost a stone in 3 weeks, but I had a lot to lose, and was one of the people who react immediately to MJ. You might, or might not lose that much. I am not sure you would be eligible, but registered pharmacies do seem to have different policies, so it is worth looking around. The only down side in my experience is the eye watering cost!

The wegovy tablets are cheaper. I paid £60 for my first month and have lost 6 pounds in two weeks. Happy to share a referral code if you want one - that saves you £40. Second month is more expensive but I hope to have hit goal weight after 8 weeks.

No reputable dispenser is going to prescribe Mounjaro for someone with a BMI around 25. 1 stone overweight is not considered obese. I understand that you feel depressed about it but I think you’re being too hard on yourself. You also have to realise that once you hit your 50s onwards, not only does losing weight get much harder but your body shape invariably changes, body fat accumulates around the stomach etc.

i have lost over 5 stone on Mounjaro - I’m only 5ft 4 so I was very overweight with a BMI around 36. I’m now just over 10 stone, which is actually still at the upper end of where I should be for my height. In fact, I was a bit dis-spirited when I told my GP my BMI had gone down to 25.2 a few months ago and she said that if she not-picking, it was should be below 25!

I’m thrilled with my weight loss, HOWEVER, I still have a fat stomach and fat things and although I can see that I look much slimmer, I don’t look slim because I’m mid-50s and that’s just not going to happen. For me, the large weight loss has also left me with loose skin round my stomach, very wobbly bat wings and jowls under my chin which really get me down (the double chin I had when I was overweight didn’t look as bad as the jowls do now 😞).

BUT overall, I’m really happy with my big weight loss, both because it has improved my self esteem and because I know it has improved my health considerably. BP has honestly from borderline high to slap-bang in the mid normal range.

I’m maintaining now, and whilst I could obsess about losing a few more lbs to be exactly within the healthy weight range, I’m not going to beat myself up over it, as I’ve come so far. I think it’s important to be at peace with your middle-aged body and accept that you’ll never have the body of a lithe 25 year old.

Edited

This is out of date. You can now be prescribed WLI for BMI 25

I wouldn't personally touch these weight loss jabs as I have a feeling we'll be seeing them pulled in a decade or so due to currently unknown issues.

It's up to you as an individual OP if you think it's worth it though.

These medication has been around for years used for diabetes in one form or another. Honestly so many people make passive aggressive comments trying to sound ‘concerned ‘ but really they want it to backfire so they fat people get their ‘comeuppance’

seanconneryseyebrow · 04/08/2026 08:10

Really? But isnt that really overweight/obese people? This woman is BMI 25. That was me when I started. Takes bloody ages to work in my experience. I wanted to get to 22/23. Its still hard cos we are healthy weight, but still want to be slimmer.

I think youd need 6 months. Because you have to ease in - there is really no other way sadly.

They’ve been in use in smaller demographics in one way or another since the 1980s so I think the long term issues would have made themselves known by now.

Oh, I wasn't aware of that thanks for the info. I try to keep myself informed but it's impossible to know everything. Learn something new everyday as the saying goes.

I started MJ after 2 years of peri meno dieting, which is miserable. It has helped me as my food noise and constant hunger was really taking away all joy in life! Is this what is stopping you lose weight? Is it hunger? If not, I don’t think it would help you lose weight
