AIBU to boycott a cleaner over a sexist advert about chores?

Just seen a new advert for Purdey and whatever kitchen cleaner. It's a man cleaning the kitchen with the logo stating 'who said cleaning was a chore'
AIBU to boycott this product as the implications from their shit ad is that women have moaned for years about running a cloth over the kitchen work tops...

OP posts:

I couldn't care less.

OrangeFlower14 · 03/08/2026 02:08

That might be the implication you got
It isn't what I got

They probably just wanted to show a man doing the cleaning

JesseDavisGonnaHangOnInThereNSoul · 03/08/2026 02:48

Punt products.
Cleaning is pita for who ever is doing it.

MustardGlass · 03/08/2026 02:50

I don’t think it’s just women complaining about cleaning but if that’s what you got from it by all means don’t use them.

11AndCounting · 03/08/2026 03:50

Buy it or don't, but you're reading-in sexism that isn't there.

NotAnotherScarf · 03/08/2026 07:17

I doubt you boycotting them will have any effect. But I think your looking in the wrong direction. The commonwealth games have just finished. The female athletes in the main wore ridiculously skimpy and tight outfits...the rules don't stipulate they have to be that way...so why are they being worn?

NotCompletelyUnfortunateLooking · 03/08/2026 07:20

I wouldn't read it like that op, I don't see any such implication. I don't think it would materially change the message if it was a woman in the ad, right? And also, whatever, just don't buy it.

MyOtherProfile · 03/08/2026 07:34

Tbf I think OP has a point, having just watched the ad, mainly because all the other ads I've seen have been women cooing over their cleaning and their house. Now suddenly we have a hot bloke in a vest doing it all. I think the point is more to pull in more women with a video of a hot bloke than anything else but it's all definitely aimed at women who clearly do all the cleaning ever anywhere, which is innately sexist.

LuckyHazelFox · 03/08/2026 07:37

If a woman had been in the ad, the complaint would have been she's made to make other women feel inferior. What is it with reading so deeply into things?

Sartre · 03/08/2026 07:39

The persil ad at the cinema the other day irritated me because the dad was doing the washing while the girl played football. Way too try hard.

Women are their target audience due to market research and sales figures, I would have thought. So why would they waste money on an advert tailored to men, when men are much less likely to be interested in branded cleaning products? Plus, as we all know, sex sells.

That's the point of adverts! Subliminal messaging in the hope people won't read too deeply but be subconsciously affected by them.

saraclara · 03/08/2026 07:40

Just watched it. I've no idea what you're on about.

Loulou4022 · 03/08/2026 07:43

It sounds to me as though the message was that using purdey & fig makes cleaning less of a chore. Nothing to do with the man, I feel you’re reading sexism in the advert where none exists.

Passaggressfedup · 03/08/2026 07:45

Well it is a chore! Am I missing something?

Me too.

I wouldn’t buy it because it looks over priced.

2ndHandLou · 03/08/2026 07:48

You don't need validation not to buy a product.

I haven't seen the ad but if you're objecting to the message why isn't that your AIBU?

That's the point though!

mumumental · 03/08/2026 08:00

That wouldn’t bother me but the fact that the product looks like an expensive gimmick does.

They haven't. They've moaned about being the one to do the entire cleaning load. Ha, if only it was just running a cloth across a top!

It's everything to do with the man. Everything in advertising is for a reason, that's the point of advertising. None of their previous ads have mentioned, it's all nice women talking about their nice houses.

I don’t think advertisers can win!! There was uproar when they used women in adverts as it was insinuating that women have to do all the cleaning and now they’re using men there’s still uproar!! 🙄

NotHisLastName · 03/08/2026 08:17

Do you think it should be a woman in the advert?

Or do you object to calling cleaning a chore?

Snufkin88 · 03/08/2026 08:26

I don’t see how this is the implication at all. Surely the implication is that the product makes cleaning easier and therefore not a chore . Are you just desperately looking for reasons to be offended
