To wonder what retirees do on a grey, wet Tuesday morning

I have 6 years to go. I could imagine retiring now. I like to upcycle things so would stay in and do that as I don't seem to have the time at the moment. I would sell them too to too up my pension as I will only have the state pension to rely on apart from a very small lump sum.

Friday. Apply for visa to get residency in continental European country. Spend lots of money on application and get rejected for no obvious reason. After 90 days return home defeated.

My sister and I always said that Mum was busier after she retired than before. She was very involved in her local church, taught English to refugees, met friends for coffee or lunch, went to Aquafit. Sometimes she and Dad would go out for a drive or to visit friends. She also seemed to spend a lot of time getting rid of stuff.😁.

I think that to a certain extent, the things you’re currently fitting into weekends and evenings spread out and fill up the day a bit more. So mundane things like shopping, cleaning, phoning a friend, reading, cooking dinner just get done in a less hurried way.
maybe they’ll get up a bit later, they tend to get involved in groups/projects/activities with other retired people so my parents do talking newspaper, Tuesday tea and toast at their local church, volunteer on a few different committees and meet up with various friends and relatives.
they’re always busy and regularly wonder how they managed to fit work in.

Not retired but when I didn’t work I went shopping on Tuesday mornings, it’s very quiet.

Exactly. The UK is very well set up for rainy weather activities as we get a lot of it!

This is what they don't do..sit in an office with no windows, answering another point less email, correcting other people's work because it's wrong and use computer systems that are not fit for purpose....role on retirement 😉

My local church is fantastic and Tuesdays is community lunch day. It’s a place for all, huge mix of people from immigrants that barely speak English to retired head teachers, and no big religious push. Tuesdays you can get a toastie for breakfast or a lunch and pudding and it’s pay as you feel . I tend to throw £10 in the pot for two coffees and two toasties. They have board games out, a craft group that has a water colour tutor and a few knitters/Crochet. It’s a lovely community space and it’s incredibly beautiful and atmospheric as it dates back to the 1300s. The choir practices around 1 in the afternoon too. It’s very easy to pass a few hours just talking to the regulars and the staff and they are always looking for volunteers for various projects etc. I currently volunteer in the cafe for buffet events as I don’t like customer facing stuff. I also fund raise all year as my sister and I run the free Christmas and Easter meals scheme and also fund the free kids meals and holiday activities. Me and DH are also mother and father christmas so very busy in December. Fridays is live music from 11-1 and it’s HEAVING and has a proper music festival vibe. Friday just gone was the busiest ever and the pews were full of People dancing as there was no space anywhere else.

Grey Tuesday morning: Sell house
Wednesday: Get on plane at Heathrow
Thursday: Enjoy life in Thailand/Costa Rica/Continental Europe

Exercises, nails, face mask. Start planning next trip where it's sunny. Read books, travel guides. Make bread for the deep freezer. Give the place a good spring clean. See friends for tea, coffee, make calls, do admin work. Get my agenda in order and organise catch-ups with friends and family. Never a bored day...

What do you do at work on a wet Tuesday morning?

Buy a horse.

French class. Stop at the pasty stall on the way to get Cornish pasties for lunch.

Tuesdays I go to choir.

Must we stay busy? How about reading, with a pot of tea and the cat?

Well I'm retired and I find plenty to do.
I do a Pilates class, a language class and I'm in a book group they all run throughout the year including on grey, cold Tuesdays! I also do school pick ups a couple of days a week, meet my friends in coffee shops, go for walks, go shopping, cook, read, go to the cinema / theatre, attend interesting lectures, go to the library etc.
When I first retired I also did some voluntary work. There is plenty to do besides work I wouldn't have time to fit work into my life!

A million and one different possibilities, surely?

But for me personally, I have a dog walk, gym, painting class, and another dog walk on Tuesdays; in term time at least.
DH spends all his time painting but also comes to the gym.
Also the usual housework, dinner, and knitting or crochet in the evening whilst watching telly.

You don't have to fill your day with anything. You are the same person but, potentially, with more choices, so how you structure it - or don't - is up to you (finances,health and other people considered). It's just a new stage of your life.
If you need routine,then set your own,but you don't need a list.

There's still a whole world out there to get involved in, or not. You just don't have work getting in the way!

Yes! Exactly this.

There are still household chores to be done obviously and, since retiring, we have got round to loads of jobs and home improvements that we hadn't had time for before.

But we both have lots of hobbies and interests to occupy us.

Unless the weather is really dire we still like to go for walks.

We often have Random Pensioner Days Out when we visit some place, attraction, museum whatever that we have never been to before.

We have had way more holidays then we could fit in while working.

And other wet Tuesdays it is just nice enough to wander down to the library and change my books then go home and curl up for a good read.

Have a second cup of coffee, and then go out to volunteer, or play a sport, or pursue a hobby, or see a friend.
Maybe stay at home and read a book, plan a trip, catch up on admin, listen to the radio or a podcast, learn a new language, write, craft....etc.
Sometimes, sadly, they even have to do the boring stuff like go to the supermarket, iron shirts or push the vacuum cleaner around!
There are as many options as there are people - the real luxury is that there is also choice.

Surely any answer is better than ‘go to work’? It would be for me!

At the moment I’d really love a wet morning here! No rain for weeks.

But what I’d do as a retiree, is probably what I often do anyway - get on with knitting or sewing up the items I make for a charity. There’s always a waiting list and the items are really wanted and valued, so it’s a great excuse for ignoring the housework. 🙂

After suffering wankers in various offices across a span of 40 years it’s sheer bliss not to have to bother anymore. I don’t care if it’s rain, shine, wet, windy or whatever. If I want to stay in I will and if I want to go out I will. It’s the freedom plus I do wonder how I ever managed to waste 8 hours a day listening to drivel (public sector)
