AIBU to feel hurt by DH’s comment after sex postpartum?

SillyPeachAnt · 02/08/2026 10:24

We’re both in our late 30s and have three children. Our youngest was born in March, so life has been pretty chaotic. Between the baby and the other children, we honestly haven’t had much time just the two of us.

Last night, the two older children were at DH’s parents, so we had some time alone and were in the mood. We had sex for the first time since having our youngest. It was actually really lovely to have some time together as a couple.

Afterwards, DH casually said, “you’re not as tight as you used to be.”

He didn’t say it in an explicitly nasty way, I don’t even think he really realises what he said and the conversation moved on afterwards, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.

I know bodies change after having children. I’ve had three children, including a baby just a few months ago and I’m not expecting my body to be exactly the same as it was years ago. I think what upset me was more the fact that it was said at all, especially in what felt like quite a vulnerable moment.

I am thinking of speaking to him about it this evening. The thing is, I don’t think he meant to be cruel. He is a good husband and a very involved dad I don’t ever feel as though I am doing parenting on my own, he often says being a father has been one of the best things to happen to him. He’s such a dad, always on dad mode. He’s actually currently out with the children because the weather is nice he picked them up and took them out and I’m going to meet them at a cafe for lunch soon.

I think that’s partly why I’m unsure how to approach it. I don’t want to make it into something bigger than it was or accuse him of trying to hurt me, but I do want him to understand that the comment has stayed with me.

Look OP, personally, I am happy you have spoken with your DH and you are HAPPY with how the convo went.

i must confess, i wouldn’t know how to react to a wonderful DH with whom I have had 3 children (even just one, saying that). Also in my case, I might feel I have had the latest one only because I lost one baby to cancer. So I would be wreaking my brains with guilt that maybe I should have stopped at 2.

however, emphasising you LIKE being married to your DH and just seems to be the starting point of all your feelings is worrying. However, you know yourself better and if to you this is a marker of a good marriage, crack on. My only concern was if you were more focused on goals (as another poster put it) and therefore invalidating your own feelings.

I agree, none should send you abuse or belittle you. Although I haven’t seen any of that.

however, you did make me laugh when you said you were being advised to send him to his parents. That did make me laugh!!!

A perfect example of what is wrong with some posters on here

10-20 years doesn’t seem that long to me. And, normally, when things are doable, humans end up doing them.

I think you've missed my point. However

major medical, anatomical, and ethical hurdles mean human clinical trials are a long way off

I'd say they were, yes.

Which gave rise to the eminently sensible phrase ‘just because you can, doesn’t mean you should’!!

It's strange that you think OP reacting strongly (not that I think she should rage and shout at her husband, but just reacting with obvious disfavour and upset, and perhaps not carefully chosen words) would be her introducing discord, when he is the one who made an unnecessary comment that was either thoughtlessly or deliberately cruel, which any grown man would know had the potential to be enormously hurtful.

It seems as though you think a man should be able to insult his wife's body, and also should be able to react badly if she is ungraciously upset about that insult, without blame being cast on him - but she should always remain calm and graceful, and centre his feelings or she will be introducing discord.

Hm. I'm sensing a pattern here. You think that men should be allowed to speak cruelly, and have negative reactions that their wives should adjust for and accommodate, but women should always prioritise their husband's comfort above anything else, or they're causing trouble.

Edited

I think maybe your spidey senses about what I do and don’t think are a little off. I have never once said that the comment was anything other than vile. Just because I don’t agree with the many posters who are advocating that OP wipe the floor with her DH, doesn’t mean I’m up for him getting away with what he said, just that I agree with the measured response OP has given. I happen to think that adult discussion and resolution achieves a much better outcome than hurling abuse, trading insults and weaponising sex - which is what many posters are advocating. Not all, but a significant number.

There seems to be a reluctance to admit that if OP acted on some of the responses here, she would only succeed in escalating things. Her marriage has weathered much worse than this and clearly she knows how to talk to her DH to resolve things, as she’s indicated here that they’ve talked and are moving forward. I think the problem a lot of posters are having is that they want the gory intimate details and OP clearly has no intention of sharing.

What are you talking about, women reject men for having small cocks all the time! In fact, having a big cock is probably the number one thing most women look for in a man!

Strange that should be the case as 85% of women cant orgasm through penetrative sex alone.

OP it’s been my experience that posters will use the private messaging service to say things that they know would get them deleted if they posted openly. The PM service is subject to the same talk guidelines as the forum and you can report offensive messages by emailing [email protected]. Include the username of the person messaging you and a copy or screenshot of the message.

Thank you I will do that. I’m just shocked that it went as far as personal messages as though they were being forced to interact with the post.

@Newbutoldfather And, even when we get to the stage of men being able to give birth (I don’t doubt we will, sooner or later), I doubt many women will choose that their husband takes on that role.

Oh, is it now.

It’s just really odd that there’s only one way every other way is wrong. I’ve said the comment was disgusting and upsetting it’s why I posted on here. Yet because Ive said I would like to speak to him and address this that’s not the way I should do it.

They want to say that how I’ve dealt with it isn’t right but also won’t tell me how else you go about situations. They want to shame me and make me feel awful with little evidence to back it but also at the same time say how they’re trying to help and support me. You don’t help someone by hurling insults at them whether that’s implicit or explicit. I came here feeling quite upset I didn’t expect everyone to agree with me but I just thought as adults we are able to have differing views.

I’ve always been under the impression you can just talk to people about things unless of course the situation is so bad that your intention isn’t to make amends. I’ve made it clearly from the staff that that’s not my intention, my intention was always to just address it. The others are saying so why post on here, I’ve also answered that by saying I just wanted to vent and there’s no pre requisites on how a post should be. People have been so untoward some verging on unkind yet expect me to share the conversation when my feelings haven’t been taken into account on here. Some solidarity this is. There seems to be a consensus that we should all act a certain way and react to things a certain way and there’s only one way.

Some have even messaged me very horrible things my post has angered some enough to take time to message me personally on here just because I haven’t reacted how apparently I should have reacted.

I didn’t come here for an internet bashing I was foolish to think this was a safe space where I could just vent then speak to my husband about how disgusting the comment was and how it made me feel that’s all. Not all this that I’ve received. That’s not to say every comment has been like that but there’s been quite a lot.

I would tell him it wasn’t something you had noticed and are going to follow it up. Book a post natal appointment with a physio and get everything checked.

OtterlyAstounding · 03/08/2026 13:54

ThreadGuardDog · 03/08/2026 13:31

Up to this point in the posting there were many posts either directly criticising his penis or encouraging OP to trade insults, while others were telling OP her bar was on the floor if she had sex with him again, and that sex would be off the table for a long time, if not permanently. So the comment was actually accurate.

If we’re going to be entirely truthful about the response OP has had then we have to acknowledge that some posters are just here for the entertainment value and have no interest in actually helping. Some are projecting from what are clearly weak marriages and others have very obviously not read all of the updates, including the one in which OP says she and her DH lost a child to cancer - an experience which changes your whole outlook on life and puts your priorities into sharp focus. Which possibly explains why OP isn’t as keen to blow this out of all proportion and introduce the MN recommended amount of discord into what sounds like an otherwise strong marriage which is likely even stronger for the tragedy it’s endured.

I think I can say for myself for sure that I have no intention of demeaning you and have actually commended on your communication style and approach.

Not everyone who is not behaving the same way as you is wrong too.

But somehow I recognised the suppression in you that I had, funnily enough, also 15 years of marriage. Perhaps you will now see me as making assumptions too but ultimately is up to you how you deal with the situation.

You don't always have to be the bigger person and take on the emotional burden. You can still hold grudges, because you are rightly hurt by his comment, not forever of course, but enough to make the other person feel the pain they have inflicted on you.

Thanks I agree I didn’t come here to disagree with people I just came here to share something that’s upset me essentially just using it as an outlet. I didn’t expect this at all and it’s detailed quite a bit. I made my notion clear from the very beginning but people don’t seem to want to accept that notion.

I was one of the posters that actually wanted to help you but you are getting in a tizzy tangle with everyone rather than progressing and finding help and support from posters. You don’t seem to want to do anything other than keep saying everyone is making you feel wrong in your reaction. We are simply trying to understand where you are now. You have said you are happy with the outcome so why stress yourself out keep repeating the same thing to everyone? Honestly I think you are either too stressed to think straight or are enjoying baiting everyone now. Kindly, give yourself a break if it’s upsetting you that much, most people here have nothing better to do than keep arguing, myself included.

I give up trying to offer advice now, enjoy the ride!

I agree thanks for the advice I haven’t said no to the advice it’s just no one seems to have concrete advice just hurling insults and saying that I have approached a situation that has affected me the wrong way and insinuating that there’s a universal way but not explicitly telling me that universal way just essentially piling on.

Most weren’t trying to help me they were trying to make me feel bad about myself even of course I’m not going to share every little thought that’s been through my head. It doesn’t mean I’ve excused the behaviour just because I haven’t shared the outcome of the conversation other than I am happy with how it went. Why can’t they be enough. Maybe MN should have clear rules and guidelines if I’d have known everything had to be shared then fair enough but I didn’t and I don’t believe I’ve broken any rules regarding my post and what I choose to share.

OP the thread can’t be doing you any good at this point. From the point at which you refused to share the conversation with your DH, everything you say has been, and will continue to be picked apart. Further engagement is stressful and pointless. If it were me, I’d stop posting/ask MN for it to be taken down. If you want further input and valid discussion I’d recommend posting in relationships. It’s less combative than AIBU and doesn’t attract the same level of keyboard warriors whose only interest is putting the boot in.

@OtterlyAstounding ,

‘So you think husbands should be unimpressed by their wife giving birth? That's certainly an opinion.’

It certainly is. I very much doubt you are ‘impressed’ by your friends who have children for merely having them. People only say this on here to criticise partners.

It is amazing (well, not really, but judging by that comment ) how many women choose to give birth when there is no man involved to ‘do it for’.

I don’t mean to be flippant, you are right, giving birth itself is amazing. But, ‘in awe of it’? That’s not quite the same thing. Nor is ‘being grateful’. Most women have children because they really want them, not to do their husbands a favour.

‘Additionally, humans giving birth is much riskier than most mammals and can result in serious injury or death, and she's doing it for both of them – which includes him– while he doesn't have to assume any physical risk or damage.’

Actually, with the medical care accorded to humans in this country vs animals (which is entirely right, we are human after all!) the human birth fatality rate is a about 1/10,000 whereas for cows, for instance, it is 1/100.

I find your attitude abhorrent.

and yes, I do find every single one of my female friends impressive.
