AIBU to feel hurt by DH’s comment after sex postpartum?

SillyPeachAnt · 02/08/2026 10:24

We’re both in our late 30s and have three children. Our youngest was born in March, so life has been pretty chaotic. Between the baby and the other children, we honestly haven’t had much time just the two of us.

Last night, the two older children were at DH’s parents, so we had some time alone and were in the mood. We had sex for the first time since having our youngest. It was actually really lovely to have some time together as a couple.

Afterwards, DH casually said, “you’re not as tight as you used to be.”

He didn’t say it in an explicitly nasty way, I don’t even think he really realises what he said and the conversation moved on afterwards, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.

I know bodies change after having children. I’ve had three children, including a baby just a few months ago and I’m not expecting my body to be exactly the same as it was years ago. I think what upset me was more the fact that it was said at all, especially in what felt like quite a vulnerable moment.

I am thinking of speaking to him about it this evening. The thing is, I don’t think he meant to be cruel. He is a good husband and a very involved dad I don’t ever feel as though I am doing parenting on my own, he often says being a father has been one of the best things to happen to him. He’s such a dad, always on dad mode. He’s actually currently out with the children because the weather is nice he picked them up and took them out and I’m going to meet them at a cafe for lunch soon.

I think that’s partly why I’m unsure how to approach it. I don’t want to make it into something bigger than it was or accuse him of trying to hurt me, but I do want him to understand that the comment has stayed with me.

I had this said to me by ex husband after our first born ,it stayed with me along time . I'm now with.a new partner and 8 kids later he assures me the that the being lose after havingamy children is myth . Of course we are not teeneagers and we have functional body parts but theydo go back to normal

CinnamonJellyBeans · 03/08/2026 16:32

OP. I'd really just like to know if he

  1. admitted it was a bad thing to say
  2. unquivocally apologised, without saying "I'm sorry that you felt that way about it"
  3. made up for it in some way, by telling you how lucky he is to have physical contact with you
Greenmouldycheese · 03/08/2026 16:04

Id tell him his penis doesnt do the job anymore. He made you feel awful yet you still had sex with him?

I hope that’s not the case. Women should have children if they want to I know I wanted to have children it’s not been easy for my career as most of the successful woman in my career do not have children they think I’m crazy. I’ll probably never get where I want to because I chose to have children but I love my kids and it’s definitely been one of the best experiences watching them grow and I cherish every little moment with my youngest one.

I am not the defiant caregiver, I work too, DH works too he works 4 days. I have just gone back to work twice a week baby is only 4 months I’d have loved to stay at home a bit longer but that simply can’t happen. My husband would like to drop his days at work but he had to fight tooth and nail to get 4 days a week and it’s only for a few months then he has to return to 5 days. He could always leave his job but it puts food on the table, he helps with his half of the children’s school fees, we have a mortgage to pay, we have bills to pay, various activities for the kids so it’s not possible.

It’s a disgusting comment I agree but my experience shouldn’t put any young woman away from having children. Despite that comment he’s been a very supportive husband and father and has always made me feel good and I haven’t felt a burden in having children with him.

I think that poster was making a general comment as in ffs us women have enough shit.

I doubt very much that theres 20-something's reading this thread now going "gosh, SillyPeachAunt's situation has deeply affected and impacted me and my future life choices, I've completely changed my outlook and wont have children now because of her experience".

@OtterlyAstounding ,

Its an experiment, proof of concept, not a model anyone is suggesting for human beings.

But it is probably the basis on which experts say 10-20 years, and not 50-100 years, or never.

I love that you've decided to go in this direction. I don't doubt men will be able to bear children at some point in the future. Whether they DO or not depends on whether at the same time as making that possible they make the whole process safer, more pleasant, and less damaging to the rest of the birthing person's life than it is currently. If they don't, men will probably just pay poorer people to take the damage for them which some kind of do now if you think about it.

Honestly you seem a bit resentful about the whole process and your inability to take part in it which is why you are insufficiently grateful to the mother of your children for allowing you to have them. I'm sure she wanted them too but she could've done that alone, as you say, and chose to share the experience with you instead. The least you can do is admire the strength and courage she used in order that you could have that experience.

OP it is very easy to take a beating on Mumsnet. Most people have if they've been on here long enough. Take the advice that you want to (and yes there is some on this thread, I gave you some myself way back) and ignore the stuff you don't, but I would have a careful think away from the thread about if ANY of it is valid even if it's rather bluntly put.

It is very easy to feel like we owe our husbands sex given everything we are told about our role in life right from being born. We don't, of course. If you are choosing to do it that's great, but it's OK not to if you don't feel like it because he's been a total twat and hurt your feelings. It wouldn't be punitive it would be just a completely normal reaction. It's also OK to try to override those feelings if you want to but as I said earlier, it stops working after a while.

If you could forget that comment so easily when you were having sex again after just a few hours (and I don’t believe any women would), then it couldn’t have hurt you.

I guess I might be different then. I’m telling you what I chose to do that’s all I can do

I wonder how many young women are reading this thread and thinking this is just another good reason not to have kids.
Along with not being able to buy a house, the interruption of career progression, always being default childcare, birth injuries and now the possibility of this as in shitty comments about tightness

I have to agree with the many posters who have assumed this post is either not real, or that the OP was concerned about upsetting her ‘perfect’ DH. I cannot imagine any woman, hearing her partners comment about her vagina, would think ‘oh, that’s hurtful - I’ll talk to him about that when it’s convenient, (because we’re adults) but in the meantime, I’ll continue to have sex because I enjoy it’. The reaction would be instant - ‘what the hell did you just say?’ You absolutely would not be able to just park such an outrageous comment until a more convenient time - the only time would be immediately!

What is it that I am feeling ? I feel as though you think I’m happy with the comment or something ofcouse not. I’ve explicitly said many times that the disgusting comment made me upset and haven’t excused the comment or said that it’s an okay comment to make.

They’ve done it already, in a rat. It was a highly artificial laboratory situation, so not directly transferable. But, normally what can be done in one mammal, with time and patience (and subject to ethics) can be done in humans.

I don't think sustaining pregnancy at a success rate of 3%, by surgically joining a pregnant female body to a pregnant male one, so that the female body maintains the pregnancy, really counts. Unless you think we should sew pregnant women to transsexual men for the duration of a pregnancy.

I have said why I didn’t share the details maybe you’ve missed that part

It really just doesn't make sense, OP. You've kept engaging, you've shared other quite specific details, and yet you've entirely avoided saying a vague, 'he was really apologetic and felt terrible for upsetting me in a moment of stupidity, so I'm happy to move past it'.

That's up to you of course, as you're not obligated to share anything at all, but it does seem an intriguing choice to keep engaging and sharing on the thread, but not to mention that one aspect.

Is it? I didn't say it was word salad, I said it was unclear, and didn't really communicate anything. That entire comment could be boiled down to "I talked to him so he knows I feel hurt, and we discussed moving forward".

Which could mean "he said I was being over-sensitive and he just wanted to forget about it" or it could mean "he was deeply mortified for his insensitivity and reassured me". It really says nothing. Which is fine - it's just not at all clear, as I observed.

No it’s clear it just doesn’t give you the details you want…

SillyPeachAnt · 03/08/2026 15:09

OtterlyAstounding · 03/08/2026 14:54

I suppose it's difficult for me to understand how she would be escalating things even if she did react very harshly, as my husband (who wouldn't say something like that in the first place!) would likely see my anger (if I was angry instead of just hurt) as stemming from the hurt he'd caused, and thus as something he'd brought on himself. In these sorts of situations, the one who has wronged the other person and caused the hurt in the first place should really be able to swallow their pride and take a tongue-lashing with grace.

As for weaponising sex...again, I think most posters were saying they wouldn't want to have sex with their husband after such a comment because of their hurt and insecurity, not that they would still want to have sex and yet would deliberately withhold it. That's not them weaponising sex, it's their husband ruining sex.

It's like you're turning everything the man does around on the woman, and holding her accountable for his bad behaviour.

I'm not interested in details, but I do think it's strange the way the OP has been relatively detailed about other things, but (unless I've missed something) has carefully avoided saying anything that would even vaguely indicate that her husband is mortified, has apologised sincerely, has taken accountability, and is upset with himself for hurting her. Odd.

Look OP, personally, I am happy you have spoken with your DH and you are HAPPY with how the convo went.

i must confess, i wouldn’t know how to react to a wonderful DH with whom I have had 3 children (even just one, saying that). Also in my case, I might feel I have had the latest one only because I lost one baby to cancer. So I would be wreaking my brains with guilt that maybe I should have stopped at 2.

however, emphasising you LIKE being married to your DH and just seems to be the starting point of all your feelings is worrying. However, you know yourself better and if to you this is a marker of a good marriage, crack on. My only concern was if you were more focused on goals (as another poster put it) and therefore invalidating your own feelings.

I agree, none should send you abuse or belittle you. Although I haven’t seen any of that.

however, you did make me laugh when you said you were being advised to send him to his parents. That did make me laugh!!!

Thanks.

I had my children because I wanted them and I love them more than anything.
I do miss my child a lot but we didn’t have another child because of losing our first born to cancer. Our eldest child was very much wanted and we took a quite a few years to even decide to try for children after losing our first child. Nothing or no one can replace my first child, my child was an individual none of my children are the same.

I am not focussed on goals everyone thinks I am I’m simply just stating how I feel I’ve never said my marriage is perfect I’ve always said I like being married to my husband he makes me feel good, he makes me very happy, brings joy to my life and I really care about him and know the feeling is mutual based on his prior actions before the comment.

Yeah I think we’ve all seen different things on this thread everyone is welcome to their own interpretation even my messages are all in my imagination by the looks of it. I’ve reported messages enough for admin to contact me and check but yeah that’s all just my interpretation and not anything that’s been said to me.

@nc42day ,

‘Experts estimate that it will be at least 10 to 20 years, if not longer, before a biological male (or a transgender woman) can successfully give birth using a transplanted womb. While some fertility specialists have stated that the surgery is technically "doable" sooner, major medical, anatomical, and ethical hurdles mean human clinical trials are a long way off’

10-20 years doesn’t seem that long to me. And, normally, when things are doable, humans end up doing them.

What's your source for that 'at least' (not 'as soon as')?
Medical science can't even manage a good number of issues that pregnant women suffer that can cause miscarriages and stillbirths, or life threatening conditions, so I'm not sure why you'd think they'd be able to work out how to sustain a biological process as complex and delicate as pregnancy in a male body that isn't hormonally or physically equipped for it.

Anyway, that's a derail, but it bears stating.

Strange that should be the case as 85% of women cant orgasm through penetrative sex alone.

Well presumably a man being 6 foot plus has no impact on women's orgasm either but it doesn't stop (most) women also looking for that in a potential partner !

I think maybe your spidey senses about what I do and don’t think are a little off. I have never once said that the comment was anything other than vile. Just because I don’t agree with the many posters who are advocating that OP wipe the floor with her DH, doesn’t mean I’m up for him getting away with what he said, just that I agree with the measured response OP has given. I happen to think that adult discussion and resolution achieves a much better outcome than hurling abuse, trading insults and weaponising sex - which is what many posters are advocating. Not all, but a significant number.

There seems to be a reluctance to admit that if OP acted on some of the responses here, she would only succeed in escalating things. Her marriage has weathered much worse than this and clearly she knows how to talk to her DH to resolve things, as she’s indicated here that they’ve talked and are moving forward. I think the problem a lot of posters are having is that they want the gory intimate details and OP clearly has no intention of sharing.
