AIBU to think parents chasing each other round Morrisons is odd?

I just saw a 30-something couple chasing each other around Morrisons whilst their young kids stood watching and giggling. AIBU to think this is mad?

What annoys me is when I'm trying to do grocery shopping and someone has brought their partner and kids like it's a family outing, and now there's too many people standing around in the aisles.

The week running up to Christmas is the worst - it's already stressful and chocker and stuffy and the queues are horrendous, then you add on families who are bringing their partner, kids, grandkids, pet fish, second uncle-in-law. Only one person needs to do the grocery shopping.

Buying the food for the Christmas festive break is one the fun things about Christmas. Why would you stop families doing that together?

HelenaWilson · 02/08/2026 00:22

You'll be one of those people I see with bitterness etched permanently into their faces after a lifetime of being unnecessarily pissed off.

And you sound unpleasant.

Being annoyed at a couple of adults using a busy supermarket as their personal playground is not being unnecessarily pissed off.

Happyjoe · 02/08/2026 00:17

I do hope some Benny Hill music was being played.

Edited - ha, not the only person to think the same!

I think it’s really odd when a couple go round a supermarket together (with or without children)

I mean, it’s a chore. Surely just one of you does it whilst the other does something equally domestically useful elsewhere.

We love it.

It is fun to discover new spices or inspiration for new recipes. I also think it has helped our dc develop quite healthy palates, because we involve them in some choices too.

We don't chase each other though ...

I wasn't shocked but I was puzzled.

What was there to be puzzled about?

Well Morrisons layout is totally different from other well known supermarkets and I get lost in it. DH gets lost in all supermarkets even small ones (think Coop). He absolutely definitely cannot cope with Costco - if I wanted to lose him I would do it there 🤣

What kind of shithole town only has a Morrisons? I seriously can't imagine such a place. How can you have a Morrisons and no Tesco or Asda?

My guess would be Horsforth. They do have some "express" supermarkets like Tesco express, but I believe Morrisons is their only actual supermarket - though I could be wrong as I've only visited once and I live a hundred or so miles away 😂

Hernameisdeborah · 01/08/2026 23:57

They sound fucking annoying, especially if it was busy and they were bashing into other shoppers and getting in everyone’s way. Supermarkets are no places for fun! 😉

Adults acting like children is pathetic. Too many people go into supermarkets and turn into idiots and it turns shopping from what should be a simple process into an absolute living nightmare.

That’s quite dramatic 😅

I’ve now got the Benny Hill tune in my head! 🤣

What’s puzzling about two adults having a laugh? It sounds like they were having a bit of a silly moment, flirting & making their children laugh. If I saw something like that I’d think they were a happy family, not sneer.

There's a time and a place and running around a supermarket is just ridiculous. Reminds me of the 1980s comedian Duncan Norvelle whose catchphrase was 'Chase Me'.

The only supermarket in our town is a Morrisons. It's pretty poor and I try and avoid going in there. So I couldn't tell you if adults chase each other round the shop or not. They certainly don't do it in Sainsbury's.

Crochetandtea · 01/08/2026 23:25

Some adults are very juvenile. Were they filming it for TikTok?

HelenaWilson · 01/08/2026 23:23

Presumably it was for their children’s benefit. You do whatever it takes to avoid a mid-shopping melt down.

Whatever it takes could include not taking the child to the shop in the first place if you know that's likely to happen.

Cla7 · 01/08/2026 23:10

Meh, I’ve done worse to keep my grumpy toddler entertained. Presumably it was for their children’s benefit. You do whatever it takes to avoid a mid-shopping melt down.

Pistachiocake · 01/08/2026 22:59

Saw a young kid nearly get lost at a Morrisons (won't ask you which branch), so it's not funny if they're neglecting their kids. Or if they run into someone who is already in pain/has just had an op etc. Bet if they were in that situation they'd be the first to complain if they ended up in hospital-or if someone else's kid ran in to them (and it wouldn't be the kid's fault if their parents taught them it's ok).

NotAnotherScarf · 01/08/2026 22:56

Yep but bloody brilliant
I am currently growing a beard which I absolutely fucking hate but it annoys my wife.

We play jokes on each other. Constantly. I have mates who will start a wind up and it goes on for weeks.

My dad and his mates were the same. Knocking on one of the lads doors in shorts and caps and school ties and asking the guys wife "is Arthur coming out to play?"

I'm baffled because we were told off by our parents for racing around supermarkets. I'd have been a bit confused then if my dad had chased my mum around the frozen food aisle.

These adults weren’t your parents though?

Bingo! I was waiting for that unoriginal lazy response that doesn't make sense. A fun sponge would soak up all the fun, so they'd be fun, fun, fun!

Edited

No. A sponge soaks up all the water therefore getting rid of the water. Just like “fun sponge” people get rid of the fun.

BlackCat14 · 01/08/2026 21:43

My boyfriend and I have a baby now and don’t go supermarket shopping together as we just do one big shop a week and take it in turns.

But this has given me such a fond memory of us pre baby. We’d go to the cinema or something and pop into Asda beforehand for snacks, and I’d be chatting away to him and suddenly realise he’d disappeared… he was hiding from me. Cue us being silly and chasing each other around/hiding. I totally forgot we used to do this until I read this, and I’m smiling so much now at the memory.

Yes really 🤣 it’s in one of the most deprived areas in the country.

Ive witnessed a fist fight in there, multiple shop lifters being chased and tackled by security, teens riding through on their bikes. We have permanent security there. A young homeless lad who’s always outside asking for change. It was broken into one night where youths smashed all the windows and made the local news.

It honestly makes me laugh when the “quaint naice” mumsnetters are so shocked about what happens in run down areas.

In fairness, I once saw two couples rolling on the floor, throwing punches and pulling hair, over discounted Easter eggs in an Asda in a comparatively prosperous suburb.
