AIBU to snap after my mum kept calling a bike a trike?

i am looking to get my daughter her first bike. She’s 5 and has had a balance bike before but never a real bike. Everytime I speak to my mum she asks me if I’ve found a “trike” yet. I keep telling her it’s a bike I’m getting, 2 wheels” and she always says “oh yes, you know what I mean”.

Well this has been going on weeks and literally everytime I speak to her she asks about the “trike” and I constantly correct her and say “bike”. She does have a habit of asking the same question for weeks at a time and she also has form for deliberately saying the wrong words for attention and it’s tiring.

this morning I was at my mums and my sister was there. I went to toilet and when I came back my sister said “not being funny but isn’t DD old enough for a proper bike now?” I asked what she was on about as I am getting her a proper bike and she said “mum! You said she was getting a trike!”

So I lost it, screamed and shouted “stop saying it’s a fucking trike!! You know it’s not so just fucking stop it”

my sister said “Jesus Christ is there any need for that?” So I told her she’s been saying trike for weeks and it’s winding me up so she said “she gets mixed up, there’s no need to scream like that” but the annoying part is she doesn’t get mixed up!!! She does it on purpose and has been doing this for years!

If I was bored and on a wind up I would have chosen a much more entertaining subject, believe me.

unless you’ve experienced this behaviour you have absolutely no idea how it grinds you down.

I do actually kind of understand this. It’s the feeling of not being heard and of what you say not being important.

My dad developed a habit of interrupting what was saying to read signs to me. It irritated me so much I became sullen and morose and it exacerbated the problem as he’d be looking for something to say.

Itsbeenalongtimeincoming · 01/08/2026 16:19

You have issues if this is even an issue.

  1. Who actually gives a crap. You know what she means and you are purposely bothered.
  2. You screamed and swore at your mother. Not cool.
  3. The woman may have dementia which is exceptionally common to use other like words .

I’ve been thinking about it and I think the reason I blew up this time was because it felt like she had started the same old shit with DD. I came to the conclusion that she does it with me to minimise everything I do - “forgets” the right word for stuff to show me how unimportant my thing is.

A kids first bike is a big deal and deliberately calling it a trike is like saying “it’s not a big deal” and I don’t want her doing this to DD

Maybe just stop mentioning the bike!

I really could not let this bother me. To be at the point where trike vs bike throws you into swearing and shouting in public at your mum indicates you have anger issues. Get a grip.

This. Good grief.
It is highly unlikely your mother is doing this on purpose. She almost certainly just has a blind spot over the two words.
If your mother really is doing this deliberately to wind you up then you must have form for getting upset about the most petty and inconsequential of things. Stop overreacting and perhaps she’ll stop doing it.

Sereine · 01/08/2026 16:18

My mother used to mispronounce the names to things she didn't approve of, deliberately. She dismissed most learning difficulties as being down to lazy children and parents, so got a bit stuck when DS was diagnosed with dyslexia. She knew that if she tried to tell me it didn't exist, she'd be in trouble, so she always called it "dis-klek-klek-sia" and usually had a couple of goes at it as if it was some really, really weird outlandish thing that was incredibly difficult to pronounce.

This is going to sound really mean, but when she had a mild stroke which affected her ability to pronounce words, I have to admit there was a part of me that felt it was karma.

WestwardHo1 · 01/08/2026 16:18

I hear you OP.

My mother is like this.

Does she do the same thing to your sister?

If you think she is deliberately being nasty to you, the only option is to go low contact or no contact. Grey rock. Put her on an information diet.

But all you need to say is "Oh isn't Nanny silly she gets so many things wrong but don't laugh at her because she is old and forgetful.

Everythingtidy · 01/08/2026 16:16

I fear the OP could be doing her mum an injustice by thinking it’s deliberate. The fact it’s being going on for years could mean there’s an intrinsic issue with her mother’s speech processing imho.

Anonymouseposter · 01/08/2026 16:15

Ffs, how important is it? You don’t know if she’s doing it on purpose because you’re not a mind reader but, if she is doing it for attention, surely the best thing to do is completely blank it. YABU for shouting and swearing over something that just gets on your nerves.

sheisforrealatiger · 01/08/2026 16:14

I guess you’re unreasonable for knowing she’s doing it to wind you up and still letting her get exactly what she wants out of it.

I get it though, some people do this on purpose and then go “what? I forgot!” or some other passive aggressive excuse.

I learnt with my mum to pick the right battles. It’s not worth it.

One day when your mum is gone you will think why did I bother arguing about a kids bike.

Because evryone knows that Bi means two and Tri is three and 5 year olds don’t have three wheeled cycles

No, not everyone knows, and that doesn't address the issue of how the OP knows her mother is doing it deliberately.

She may be, it might be ignorance, it might be mental health issues, all I wanted to know was how the OP knows it's deliberate. Her medical qualifications would help.

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 01/08/2026 16:11

Nah you're fine. My mother is staying with us for 3 months like she does every summer. I often lose my shit over the small things. I feel bad but it's relentless.

itsgettingweird · 01/08/2026 16:10

CruCru · 01/08/2026 15:51

The thing is, I think this would actually be more unkind than just shouting at the mum. Back when I was young, people would say things like “We need to get your head checked” (as a threat). This is the same sort of thing.

The OP doesn’t think her mum has dementia, she said that she does this sort of thing on purpose and has for years. Not every irritating thing that someone does is down to dementia (if they are over 60) or being neurodivergent (if they are under 60). Sometimes people are just a bloody pain in the arse.

That’s the point!

OP knows her managing and doing it on purpose.

It’ll annoy her mum if OP suggests it’s because her mum is unwell and ignores the purposeful spite behind it.

Omg my mum did the exact same thing!! I did karate (although only ever got to brown belt) and my mum continuously called it Judo.

there are so many examples of this behaviour over the years!

Do you pronounce it “Kah Rah TAY!” like Ross from Friends OP?

SouthLondonMum22 · 01/08/2026 16:09

You know she was trying to wind you up so why rise to it? Why the need to correct her every single time?

Stop talking about these things to her and if it comes up, ignore her using the wrong word, stop correcting her and she'll soon get bored if you don't react.

I suspect it indicates mum doesn't read the room very well or that she's deliberately teasing.

KiwiFall · 01/08/2026 16:09

It grates because it is showing you that show your mum doesn’t listen to you and isn’t taking an active interest in your and your families life. If she has always done this, it is to annoy you and you’ve let it. Hard as it is you need to ignore this behaviour to protect your sanity. Be mindful what you tell her in future if she goes on about things to annoy you. If it’s new then yes it could be dementia but it sounds like she likes pressing your buttons.

My mum has for for this OP and it is really frustrating. I'm not sure why she does it. It's been happening since I was a child, so not dementia or recent cognitive decline (my Dad does have dementia so I have some experience of this).

You were wrong to lose your temper and swear at her. But I feel your pain.

I find the easiest strategy for me is to ignore it.

Have you bought the trike yet?
Yes, we have bought her a Isla bike, they get great reviews and are really lightweight. Here's a picture.
Does DD love her trike?
She's figured out pedalling really quickly, we're really proud of her.

Just deprive it of oxygen.

AgnesMcDoo · 01/08/2026 16:07

Screaming and swearing over a mild annoyance.

YABVU and out of order

Haven’t you ever said “im thinking of getting DC a xxxxxxx because they are outgrowing Xxxxxx”.

It’s quite normal. I’ll realise something needs upgrading and then start saving for it.

Last time I mentioned I thought ds was outgrowing his home it was 3 months before I got a new one. Because I noticed in January when we didn’t go out much on it and decided I’d wait until the weather was nicer in case he had another growth spurt before purchasing a new one for the summer where he’d get lots of use from it.

I can't ever imagine screaming and swearing at my mother for whatever reason . That is less acceptable than using the wrong word for a trike /bike . Get a grip .

Quite.
