Pigs on the A14

A lorry load has shed multiple dead pigs onto the A14. Apparently the pigs died of “natural causes”. AIBU to think they didn’t die of natural causes, they died due to suffocation and overheating in a transport lorry.

Surely the animal welfare organisations will be looking into this?

A dual carriageway has a few cars driving on either side of the road. There is a barrier which runs in between the roads.

Lane of A14 near Spaldwick closed after spillage of dead pigs

National Highways says specialist crews are at the scene to clean the spillage.

Sounds like fallen stock off to a rendering plant, shame they fell on the road will be a mess to clean up.

Sounds like deadlock. Pig transport is highly regulated by disease control regulations.

100% agree. If you are happy to shit a dead animal out your arse, then why would you worry about their journey from their barns to the gas chamber?

But they weren't living. That's sort of the whole point. The lorry shed it's load of dead animals. If they had been alive, got loose and were hit by cars, yes that would have been awful. But they weren't.

It’s the dead cart. That’s what we call it. It transports dead animals to the burn house for incineration.

I eat pork and bacon, but i don't feel sad. I don't really understand I would?

They either died from natural causes, slaughter for meat or died in the accident. It doesn’t really matter does it.

That’s gross and also unfortunate. For the record, I think a hog roast is outdated. One step at a time.

Well, as an estimated 90% of farmed pigs are slaughtered in gas chambers in the UK, I strongly suspect ‘gas’ was the natural cause here.

They'd be in cling film in neat little pieces had that been the CoD, not littering the road en masse.

This doesn't make sense. The slaughtered pigs would remain in the slaughterhouse because the carcasses are butchered. Far more likely that the lorry was transporting animals that had died on the farm so that the carcasses can be disposed of in accordance with the law, as several people who know what they're talking about have suggested.

My driving instructor actually freaked out: she didn't realise that I was alert and moving round the mess [Sorry...shan't elaborate] and moved to grab the wheel to manoeuvre round because she thought that I was going to drive through.

She was a nervous wreck at the end of that drive: the next obstacle was an Orange Band, rehearsing for the 12th July. She was terrified of offending them and making her business a target for vandalism. (I'd beeped my horn at them...)

Yes, I saw this in Fife many years ago - pig carcasses on the road between Cowdenbeath and Dunfermline: I was having a driving lesson and recall having to drive round them.

We can’t comment as the full story is not there . The Information doesn’t suggest that they died on the lorry .

It doesn't look as though they 'dumped' dead pigs all over the road.

More that the lorry accidentally shed its load.

Dont spoil it for the frothers! As an aside when we were in Cambodia a pig was being transported on the back of a moped. Alive. They are very shouty. The cow in Switzerland being airlifted acted with much more decorum.

Sadly I think it is just an unfortunate accident. Transport companies are regulated by DEFRA and it is highly unlikely they died on the lorry. It was obviously fallen stock as per a pp.

Things do die and need transporting from a to b.

Yes exactly this - and not just farm animals, horses, donkeys, llamas etc all have to be collected and cremated. You’ve not been allowed to bury dead stock for decades now.
It sounds like an unfortunate undignified accident, rather than a tragedy for those pigs. If you keep animals whether it’s a horse or a cat size at some point you’ll have to deal with disposal sadly.
