Care homes

My parent has suddenly announced they want to go into a care home following a fall. I'm not sure if I am outdated but are care homes nice places to be? Or is there a better way to give an older person some support?

Ignore the poll.

I do think there’s a benefit to moving into a care home a bit earlier than when it becomes the only option. As a PP said you can then take advantage of everything they offer so you get more for your money and you can make friends rather than be too frail or deaf or have dementia and be unable to really socialise with others so well.

however the cost is crippling. So if you end up in a home for ten years that’s a huge amount of money. Not sure how it works when your money runs out and if you get moved to an inferior place if the state start covering the cost.

BeMintFatball Good Lord ! I knew they were expensive but £10,400 per month !

Is your Mum happy there ? Is it good value do you think ?

OP I think about this sometimes because really what is the perfect answer, they cost a lot, often seem depressing to me, you go from living in a house to just having your own room. I don't think I would want to sit doing the communal activities.

Whay about your mum staying in her own home but with one of those necklaces with a button on connects to a company who can send assistance if needed ? FiL had similar

The home my mum was in was so comfy, we all wanted to move in and be looked after 🙂

Ring some up to see whether they could accommodate your dad. Make appointments with any that appeal. They have advisors who talk you through everything. They help you sort out funding.

I really hope this goes smoothly for you and your dad's reassured 💐

Get your post moved to either the cockroach cafe or Elderly Parents where you will find loads of us living this stage of life.

Your parent has been sensible because a fall is the start of decline. Be proactive in your decision before it’s too late and decisions have to be made on the hoof.

For a bench mark my mum is paying £10400 per month for nursing care which is a highest rate. Residential care is the lowest rate, still bloody expensive. I would have loved for her to benefit from the outings, the social events, the hydro therapy pool, the gym and the cinema room but she was already too frail before she went into care for end of life care.

Get in touch with adult services in your area. Parent can be provided with either a wrist or pendant alarm . Get there needs assessed and go from there.

I used to do market research and for he question to older people on what they dread most, after death of a partner was losing their independence. I would cut my throat with a rusty saw rather than go into one of these places. I don't care how good it is. Communal living is not for me.

Depends on the home I guess.
