Overnight flushing

Maybe my titles a bit deceiving! I'm talking toilet flushing here!
Dh and I disagree about this. He doesn't like anyone flushing the toilet overnight as says it wakes everyone up. He says it's normal for people not to flush overnight.
I think it's disgusting. I don't want to be weeing on another person's pee!
So am I being unreasonable here?

Both me and DM are light sleepers, and DM gets up early for work. So if I stay at hers, I don't flush in the night.
I am also a "yellow, let it mellow" person anyway as I am on a water meter.

Do all you non flushesrs use toilet paper ? Does it stack up and block your loos?
We always flush.

Of course I use toilet paper 🤔

I go for one wee per night. I use two or three squares for this wee.
DH goes for one or two wees. He uses one square per wee.

So that's a maximum of five squares of toilet paper that'll have stacked up overnight. Definitely not enough to block the toilet.

We don’t flush overnight. You need to drink more water if your pee smells that bad.

This!! We only flush overnight if we have visitors staying.

Wonkybaby · 04/08/2026 15:18

I’m with you OP and this was one of the many reasons I divorced my exh. I have literally never been woken up by a flushing loo, but I was consistently revolted by 5 hour old piss sitting in the bog first thing in the morning.

PinkPeppermint · 04/08/2026 09:37

Always flush - day or night, poo or wee

Myblueclematis · 04/08/2026 09:24

I'm only a non-flusher at night because I live alone, no one else will have to be forced to notice I have not flushed the loo after using it. It does not smell if I don't flush.

No, the loo paper doesn't block the toilet and if I get up more than once to go, I do sometimes flush it then.

I'm on a meter, so I am a bit more careful about water use especially at the moment, not flushing every time at night is at least saving a bit of water.

This thread got me thinking. I’ve been married for 28 years. I don’t think I ever had a conversation with dh about whether to flush or not to flush. I just assumed that nobody did tbh.

suburberphobe · 02/08/2026 19:24

I live in an appartment block and always piss in the night before bed.
Never heard anyone else pissing, day or night.

Dobeebeedah · 02/08/2026 19:03

We flush occasionally at night. Rarely if we have a visitor as we have our own toilet which is next to spare room. Visitors have their own and it doesn't bother us at all.

singlepringle12 · 02/08/2026 18:58

‘If it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down’

Simple & easy, my toilet doesn’t smell like a urinal at all & I’m pretty sure all of us have ‘peed on someone else’s pee’ in public toilets without noticing… save some water!

ThatCheeseNeedsEating · 02/08/2026 18:27

We need more flushers on here! We're losing the poll!

Exactly! The smell reminds me of a mens urinal. Eew

If you are properly hydrated, pee shouldn't smell like that. Also, if everyone closes the lid after use and first one up flushes, it's a non issue.

blankcanvas3 · 01/08/2026 13:23

I’m a non flusher because when I was a kid our pipes were really loud so it would wake everyone up, and then never got out of the habit. DH doesn’t flush if I’m at home because he would worry he’d wake me up as my side of the bed is near the door to the en-suite. Kids do flush.

Changeaboutnow · 31/07/2026 00:54

You must all be extremely light sleepers if the sound of a toilet flush wakes everybody up.
Either that or your plumbing needs checking out.

The house plumbing yeah?

Yes your husband could, now try to explain that to a small child or a teenage boy who definitely won't want to see it. Mine are heavy, it's not a little bit of blood on toilet paper

Edited

Put some tissue over it if your children can't cope with menstrual blood.

Explain to your teenage boy that 50% of the adult population bleed and that there are far worse things he could encounter in life.

If it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down.

This is the rule in our house.

parallhel · 01/08/2026 09:46

Flush your troubles away, all day and all night if you want to. Buy DH a set of loop earplugs, a good investment for a moaning fecker.

This is why I love living on my own. I can flush forever if I want to, and if I need to, I will.

NCTDN · 01/08/2026 09:08

No the non flushers are!!

Whatevergoes2025 · 31/07/2026 23:51

The wee wees are winning! 🏆

Poppinpoppinpopcorn · 31/07/2026 23:35

GotANewFrockTooFuckingFat · 31/07/2026 20:40

No. I don't flush when I'm off my period, why would I when I'm on my period?
I'm pretty sure DH can handle seeing a little bit of my menstrual blood in the pan first thing in the morning 🙄

ComedyGold007 · 31/07/2026 23:34

My ex IL’s had a no nighttime flushing rule but I think it was due to FIL not wanting to keep bills down, rather than noise (they also rarely had the heating on, even in December).

I think it’s weird. And their toilet stank in the morning and my ex MIL is so house proud, I cannot imagine she liked the stupid rule.

Cluelessfirstimer · 31/07/2026 23:25

I am a major light sleeper and generally always had annoyingly good hearing. A cough from DP and im bolt upright awake.

Team no flush here. Unless its a poo...

NCTDN · 31/07/2026 22:46

Ooh yabu in the lead now. I thought I was the odd one at first.
