AIBU to think public racist / anti immigrant / anti trans posts can justify dismissal?

Slightyamusedandsilly · 30/07/2026 18:39

Read a couple of accounts this week of racist, public supporters of the far-right being sacked for spouting race / immigrant / trans hate on their personal social media accounts.

One was a doctors receptionist.
The other a school learning support assistant.

Both roles where they are likely to work with people in the groups they're publicly trashing online. One was recorded at a far-right rally, speaking about the amount of immigrants she was forced to support in her line of work.

What is your opinion on this?

YABU - People should be able to express their opinion without fear of losing their job. Freedom of speech.

YANBU - Anyone with any kind of public facing role/a role where their employer is likely disapprove of this should not publicly post this way and needs to understand that being sacked is their own fault.

Try a new one as I've been getting called a Nazi, terf, bigot, racist and all the rest by the left wing and its water off a ducks back, though I am pissed off that my check from the American fundamental Christian right still hasn't arrived.
I'm a centerist and an atheist so your typical left wing attacks are pointless, however they do show the exact behaviour that I was describing perfectly and shows your hypocrisy.
If you have an actual rebuttal of any of my points im more than willing to discuss them with you but all you seem to have is attacks and abuse much like many on the left

I have neither 'abused' or 'attacked' you. Goodness. Such hyperbole in response to a mild difference of opinion. It's like arguing with a TRA.
My post was my rebuttal.
You told me I should tell other left wing people off for giving me a bad name. I was merely asking if you practice what you preach.
I couldn't care less what your religion or politics are. I was referring to your sex realist views, which i share, and the way GC women are maligned because far right extremists have aligned with these views.
I thought it might strike a chord and encourage you to see your error in seeing all left wing people as a homogenous enemy. But no. You wade back in to fling more insults at me, as representative of your imaginary monster: The Left.

Surely, at its root, the point is that an LSA is there to support children. And hating children (from specific groups) is a contraindication?

Of course, no one would have known if she'd stayed quiet. But instead she gave a recorded, public speech.

I disagree. Both sides have extremism.
Respecting an individual is important, forcing the changes on others is disrespectful.
You can be concerned about immigration and children being taught about sexual preferences and options to change gender without being labelled as hateful.
The link between Autism and transgender gender confusion is undeniable. Society has allowed the vulnerable get trapped.

Its worse than that the gender idealogs actively targeted vulnerable asd kids by telling them that transitioning would cure their autism

There is, in my view, a big difference between seeing the harm that a religious state like Afghanistan can do, and seeing an entire religion and all its participants as ‘dangerous‘, without any nuance whatsoever. I wonder how she thinks she’s any safer for Muslim women or children if she writes them all off as dangerous.

There’s also a wide range of understanding of what ‘GC’ means and how that is applied. The law protects her beliefs, as it protects the beliefs of people who are trans.

Of course anyone can have any extreme views they like, provided they act within the law and any regulatory or contractual arrangements they are subject to - for example employment.

I personally find it dangerous when agents of the state, who have enormous power, hold strong views (negative or positive) about some groups of people. And again, I don’t think it aligns with the regulatory position of social work to single out a religion as ‘dangerous’. If you can’t be neutral, get a different job.

I personally think that all religions are dangerous in different ways and to different extents.
You say that you have a problem with agents of the state having strong views does that include gender ideology? And how do you feel about state agencies promoting a harmful and contested ideology?
Oh and you do realise that gender ideology has never been tested in law.or put to the grainger test so until it is its not necessarily a protected belief under the equality act. Its also highly unlikely that gender ideology would pass any part of the grainger test and would most likely be ruled NWORIDS.

How did it go when you had a chat with Tommy Robinson and other right wing lunatics and misogynists who are giving sex realist people a bad name?
Oh, hang on...I know this one. Isn't it that women can't be held responsible for the behaviour of others? That it's perfectly possible to agree on somehing without agreeing on everything? That linking sex realist people with the far right is a slur to discredit us..? Or have I misunderstood?

I was clear enough, I can’t be bothered to explain it again.

Not sure why it’s so important to you what my job is - presumably so you can decide whether to disregard what I’m saying. I work with women and children affected by domestic abuse, including honour based abuse.

Well of course its important. If you work at the local butchers I dont think the opinion is as valid as if you work in that field. You do so we can have a more interesting discussion. Before that though, thank you for everything you do. That is a tough area to be in, but so needed. I actually did some similar work in charities around this and I found it very rewarding but very very challenging.

As for you stating it was clear enough - it wasn't to me. Maybe Im being a bit thick, but Im quite academic so I dont think so. I wasn't being facetious I genuinely would like to know your perspective - especially given the field you work in. I am always open to learning and improving my own practice.

So when you say you work with abused women, is that after the event/during and then providing support? My role in child protection is to investigate if something like that is happening. By the time its got to me someone has raised the alarm for some reason and so when it gets to me I was to decide if there was anything to worry about. So for example the red flag in the referral could be:

  • an adolescent girl being withdrawn from school,
  • talk of an overseas trip,
  • increasing restrictions on friendships,
  • fear of bringing shame on the family,
  • threats if she refuses a marriage,
  • a mother who has undergone FGM
Obviously if they are white british you arent going to be thinking about the same concerns that you would be if they were from a country that supports FGM/forced marriage/honour based violence.

Im not walking around judging random muslim families that i meet in daily life. Im sent referrals about concerns for children, and the background of every child matters in the assessment - how could it not?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 31/07/2026 19:29

NOBODY should be bringing their prejudices to work if they are in a state sponsored role with power over people. They should work on facts, and evidence and if they are unable to do that, they should stand aside

I couldn't agree more, @Switchnow, but good luck with that when far too many places of employment are infested with their preferred ideologies

We all have private lives and issues we care about, but the problems start when some try to impose them on others, insisting they should care equally about whatever it is and that they're (insert insult of choice) if they don't

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/07/2026 18:59

Why can’t a social worker openly describe herself as a TERF on her social media? It’s shorthand for “feminist who centres women and girls’ sex based rights”. It’s a reclaimed slur.

Gender critical feminism is a belief protected by the Equality Act 2010, see the many cases which have found in our favour.

??

Switchnow · 31/07/2026 18:51

seanconneryseyebrow · 31/07/2026 16:27

Im confused. So to you it was racist that she was respectful about the differing culture and put the child's timidity down to that. And of course she was wrong to do that because of the outcome. But the fact that in practice I dont do that (which is what you are advocating for), and if a child is timid, looks scared of the parents, even in a muslim home where that is commonplace, I judge the behaviour and assess accordingly. I have supervisors who don't like that, and worry that I haven't taken culture into account enough.

So why am I a terrible social worker when it seems like you are agreeing that I should treat the child abuse as child abuse and ignore whatever culture they are from and not 'respect the culture/religion'. Is that right?

You talk about facts, but it is a FACT that muslim girls are more at risk of violence in the home, gypsy girls are more at risk of educational neglect, autistic girls are more vulnerable and underdiagnosed and more influenced by GI - these are facts.

As for the terf stuff, I keep it to myself but I should be allowed to say I am - its a protected belief its not a prejudice.

You are very opinionated on this, and I will ask again what field you are in?

Edited

So we have LA, a social worker, admitting her prejudices could have influenced her actions. And yet it’s ok for social workers to believe Muslims are dangerous and openly describe themselves as a ‘TERF’ and you think that’s, what, more professional?

NOBODY should be bringing their prejudices to work if they are in a state sponsored role with power over people. They should work on facts, and evidence and if they are unable to do that, they should stand aside. Clearly this is a hard ask, and current conditions mean unsuitable people remain in post and are overworked and under supervised/supported. But surely you want open minds in the profession, not Lisa Arthurworreys and not self declared Islamophobes?

I guess the anti-semitic teachers and doctors didn't get the memo.

Which bit? If its the latter, I wrote my thesis on it, based my independent SW business on it, and wrote a book on it. So I have a LOT of references on it. I also base my practice on the fact that autistic girls are heavily and negatively influenced by GI and so I avoid servicing those service users. I am talking about faux free speech advocates who quickly forget their principles when it’s speech they dislike.

And I explained that rightly or wrongly they saw it differently and they thought the cancellers were getting a taste of their own medicine. The fact that you can’t even see it speaks to your own bias. Those people thought they were hypocrites and they thought the same about them.

It isn’t nonsense, you just can’t see it from their perspective. I’m not saying they were right, but it’s why they thought turnabout was fair play.

It is nonsense - because there are numerous examples of it (like people lamenting the UK punishing people for social media posts while applauding Trump preventing entry to the USA for people who may have spoken negatively about him online.)

There is a way to remain steadfast to free speech principles while also say that people should use the Charlie Kirk firing lessons as to why free speech important for all.

But that’s not what happened. Many people were defending CK sackings, not due to schadenfraude but simply because it was a way of people demonstrating freedom of expression in a way they were not comfortable with.

I think you can look at it both ways, and it’s why this sort of tribalism isn’t helpful (not you personally, tribalism as described in general). The way many people on the right saw it is that people who would have been baying for them to lose their jobs for a range of spicy comments, got a taste of their own medicine. And in many cases it was disproportionate, like Forstater, Meade, Higgs were. I admit to a wry smile at the schadenfreude of the cancellers getting cancelled myself at the time.

The them and us mentality isn’t helpful, and I’m certainly not immune to it, but I try to refrain.

But that’s nonsense and we all know it. What it showed is despite their claims to the contrary what free speech advocates actually mean speech the agree with should be free. And this has always been the case. They have never been fierce proponents of free speech.

JHound · 31/07/2026 16:59

I don’t know about “left vs. right” but I do know that many so called free speech advocates were fine with people losing their jobs for not being suitably grief stricken over Charlie Kirk’s death.

I also think it’s the nature of the view. I can see why people would be more supportive of overtly racially bigoted police officers losing their jobs compared to police officers who support Net Zero for example.
