AIBU to think public racist / anti immigrant / anti trans posts can justify dismissal?

Slightyamusedandsilly · 30/07/2026 18:39

Read a couple of accounts this week of racist, public supporters of the far-right being sacked for spouting race / immigrant / trans hate on their personal social media accounts.

One was a doctors receptionist.
The other a school learning support assistant.

Both roles where they are likely to work with people in the groups they're publicly trashing online. One was recorded at a far-right rally, speaking about the amount of immigrants she was forced to support in her line of work.

What is your opinion on this?

YABU - People should be able to express their opinion without fear of losing their job. Freedom of speech.

YANBU - Anyone with any kind of public facing role/a role where their employer is likely disapprove of this should not publicly post this way and needs to understand that being sacked is their own fault.

I find it a bit creepy that you’re thanking people when they do a job you think is worthy of them having an opinion.

But a bit part of why the third sector is needed is that women and children don’t trust state agents like social workers. And statements like ‘Muslim women aren’t choosing anything for themselves’ are a huge part of why. So, on the plus side I suppose I should be grateful that you’re keeping my organisation in work.

As it happens we see and hear from more Sikh women than Muslim, and there’s national evidence that ‘honour’ ideas are more common among Sikh communities, but I’ve never heard anyone espouse the same prejudice. Lots of Islamophobia though. I put that down to the fact that more Muslims in the UK have backgrounds from poorer countries and are less likely to be in well thought of jobs. A bit like how you think butchers’ opinions are irrelevant.

God you really are rude aren't you. I never said a butchers opinion was irrelevant or unworthy. I said as you work in the field your opinion held more weight as its more informed. Turns out I still don't agree with you though but that doesnt mean it isnt uninformed - we have just come to a different conclusion. Currently most of my work is working with autistic women and girls, and Im a court expert witness in such cases. My opinion therefore is more informed than most on this subject. As yours is on working with DV victims and those suffering honour abuse. Its not creepy to honour what you do. Its hard but important work.

No matter how obnoxious and rude you are, and disrespectful of social workers (who you clearly loathe - wheres the open mind and lack of prejudice now?) I still acknowledge that.

Gosh you really don't like social workers do you. That case is widely known to have been a multi-agency failure. Medics included. She went to the hospital multiple times and things were missed or explained away as other things other than abuse.

Anyway, we arent going to agree. I agree we should aim higher and keep an open mind but what that looks like to me in practice is clearly very different to you.

Some of them are lovely. Some are dangerous.

Yes, of course it was a multi-agency failure, they almost always are. I was responding to your incorrect claim that LA said she was afraid of being called racist.

I’m never going to agree with someone who thinks it’s ok to assume Muslim (or any other) women don’t know their own mind. You say you care about women but you deny some women any agency at all.

Why do they necessarily have to have been disciplined? I thought you said nobody was above such scrutiny.

The thread is about people losing their jobs because of the views isn’t it? So presumably what you’re objecting to is right wing views being disciplined and anti-Semitic ones not? I’m not sure that anti-Semitism isn’t right wing but anyway.

Lisa Arthurworrey wasn’t concerned about being seen as racist, she was herself a black woman who acknowledged that her own preconceptions about the race of the family had contributed to her assessment. However a much larger issue in that case was the lack of supervision by her seniors and a failure in their case to read and understand the medical reports provided.

Her failure was to rely on her own ideas about the family’s culture, rather than retain an open mind. People unable to keep an open mind should not be in any role that requires them to assess and protect children or vulnerable adults. It’s difficult, we all bring our preconceptions, and there is a lack of both quantity and quality in the sector for all sorts of reasons. But we should aim higher.

And again, feel free to provide an example of an anti-Semitic doctor or teacher who was not disciplined.

Why do they necessarily have to have been disciplined? I thought you said nobody was above such scrutiny.

BCBird · 01/08/2026 09:07

There has to be certainty that it is indeed hate and not difference of opinion. I am a woman. I am pro women's rights. Some people might say this makes me anti- trans- I think not.

Switchnow · 01/08/2026 09:04

Which is why I said shame anti-semitic doctors and teachers, who have exhibited their hate, didn't get the memo.

Well of course its important. If you work at the local butchers I dont think the opinion is as valid as if you work in that field. You do so we can have a more interesting discussion. Before that though, thank you for everything you do. That is a tough area to be in, but so needed. I actually did some similar work in charities around this and I found it very rewarding but very very challenging.

As for you stating it was clear enough - it wasn't to me. Maybe Im being a bit thick, but Im quite academic so I dont think so. I wasn't being facetious I genuinely would like to know your perspective - especially given the field you work in. I am always open to learning and improving my own practice.

So when you say you work with abused women, is that after the event/during and then providing support? My role in child protection is to investigate if something like that is happening. By the time its got to me someone has raised the alarm for some reason and so when it gets to me I was to decide if there was anything to worry about. So for example the red flag in the referral could be:

  • an adolescent girl being withdrawn from school,
  • talk of an overseas trip,
  • increasing restrictions on friendships,
  • fear of bringing shame on the family,
  • threats if she refuses a marriage,
  • a mother who has undergone FGM
Obviously if they are white british you arent going to be thinking about the same concerns that you would be if they were from a country that supports FGM/forced marriage/honour based violence.

Im not walking around judging random muslim families that i meet in daily life. Im sent referrals about concerns for children, and the background of every child matters in the assessment - how could it not?

I find it a bit creepy that you’re thanking people when they do a job you think is worthy of them having an opinion.

How does your post respond to that? NOBODY very clearly means NOBODY, doesn’t it?

Switchnow · 01/08/2026 08:57

LuckyHazelFox · 01/08/2026 08:54

I was responding to what you said here:

NOBODY should be bringing their prejudices to work if they are in a state sponsored role with power over people. They should work on facts, and evidence and if they are unable to do that, they should stand aside. Clearly this is a hard ask, and current conditions mean unsuitable people remain in post and are overworked and under supervised/supported. But surely you want open minds in the profession, not Lisa Arthurworreys and not self declared Islamophobes?

How does your post respond to that? NOBODY very clearly means NOBODY, doesn’t it?

Switchnow · 01/08/2026 08:56

seanconneryseyebrow · 31/07/2026 16:15

@Switchnow views are exactly why people like me worry about being called racist. Because her definition of racist, hateful views to the point I should be out of a job are the ones where I express I worry deeply about women and girls in some muslim households. I find it interesting you jumped on the Victoria Climbie example as one to prove your point about failing social workers - when what that shows me is that social worker was concerned that she would be deemed racist for saying she had concerns about Victorias quietness and worried it might just be cultural. Ive been there myself.

Lisa Arthurworrey wasn’t concerned about being seen as racist, she was herself a black woman who acknowledged that her own preconceptions about the race of the family had contributed to her assessment. There have even cases of doctors, teachers carrying out anti-semitic activity. They would fit into your observation that people in state roles aren't fit for that role if they harbour prejudice. This is the exact reason why I tackled the reference to only the right wing, in the OP.

They dont 'make their choices for themselves' though. Even if they think or claim they do. And they do judge others who don't, you just don't get to hear it. If you really knew what they thought of non-muslims you would be horrified. I think to pretend its like veganism or any other genuine unharmful choice just isnt accurate. Women and girls are victims of this religion and culture, the women you work with included. I believe some cultures are superior to others - we aren't supposed to say that though are we, but its true. I prefer cultures that do not encourage wife beating, paedophila, FGM, breast ironing, stoning, honour abuse, child marriage and constant inflation of the male ego. Hate doesnt come into it. Only moral preferences. Some people think thats racist or stereotyping. I think its realism. The muslim religion is based on the Quran. Read what it is based on. Its not a warm and fluffy peaceful religion with just a small dark side. The whole lot is dangerous. I dont judge these women - I fear for them and their female children. Read some of Ayaan Hirsi Ali's work - an ex-muslim woman. Its fascinating and terrifying.

I'm not going to argue with you about what goes on in the minds of other women.
All I can offer as a non Muslim woman with close friends, extended family, colleagues and service users I've worked with for 30 years who are Muslim women; is my experience from daily close contact and strong and frank relationships.
Obviously I don't know what other women are thinking or saying when I'm not there, but neither do you.

Why all this "left wing people" or "right wing people" or TRAs or this group of people or that.
It's not about any particular group of people, it's about the effects of social media , AI, and how that's affecting people's ability to accept different perspectives and disagreement.
On this forum the feminism board is the prime example of this behaviour.

Theres no left or right anymore is there. Im ancient (52) and always been incredibly left wing. In the past ten years for the first time in my life I seem to be aligning with what are considered right wing views by some. But are they? Who knows. Ive given up caring. Im hugely GC, Im massively concerned about trans ideology, the influence of Islam, Im worried about grooming gangs, etc. I feel politically homeless now but I feel the left don't give a shiny shite about women and girls anymore so they lost me. I know im not alone in this.

I work with Muslim women who follow the tenants of their own faith in terms of dress, avoiding alcohol, prayers, diet etc. They make their choices for themselves, they don't expect non Muslim women, or indeed other Muslim women who are colleagues or service users to make the same choices, or judge them if they don't. No more than I as a vegan would refuse to hand out food parcels containing milk and eggs to people who ate these things.
Because suitability for a job doesn't depend on one's religion or culture or the choices a person makes for their own life, provided they are within the law. It depends on their ability to refrain from judging others who make different ones, from stereotyping whole groups on the behaviour of some within that group, and a willingness to uphold the ethos and reputation of the organisation.

Where does following a religion that is sexist, homophobic, anti trans etc fit in with occupations that are public facing? Perhaps ask for their pov why they think women should cover up, because their wives and daughters do? How far do we go? Look at their opinions on FB (rather than rants), so sack them if there are victim blaming comments? Do we check if their are any child marriages across their family and question them? Or is just one way?

I dont see all left wing people as enemies i do however see a very obvious pattern of left wing people acting like a mob, tarring anyone who disagrees with them as far right, nazis bigots etc and that is exactly what you did when I pointed out that its not just the TRAs who behaves in this way like you tried to claim and calling someone slurs is hardly a rebuttal. It is infact a feature of left wing politics and its a dangerous thing to allow to go unchecked as has been for years.

You can try and backtrack from what you said but its there clear for all to read you called me a nazi and that is an abusive attack.

The left has a massive problem with authoritarian control and mob justice that needs dealing with in the same way the far right does.
The biggest problem we have with the left is they've pushed the Overton window so far that extremist far left ideology is now mainstream left, to the point that someone like yourself who considers themselves as left wing gc would be considered at best right wing for your gc beliefs if not far right.
Look up horseshoe theory because it'll explain things for you and remember that whether its far right or the current majority of the left in charge women suffer

I did not call 'call you a slur'. I didn't use any of the terms you are claimimg I did against you.i don't know whether you are mixing me up with someone else, being disingenuous, or simply seeing offence because you expect it rather than because its actually there.
You think its dangerous to lump GC people with the far right? I agree. I also think its dangerous (and ridiculous) to lump all left wing people with extremists. That's all I was trying to illistrate.
Anyway, to your point. I disagree the left has moved the Overton Window within the mainstream. Over 90% of the public support single sex spaces.
There had been an undue level of influence in the public sector from TRAs certainly. But remember, these institutions are servants of the state, overseen by our government and subject to the laws it sets.
This influence was permitted to hold sway under decades of Conservative governments. So if some identifying as left moved the window, the right with the power to stop it didn't have a problem, did they?
Because this isn't about political leaning, it's about sex based politics and the neglect to give any consideration to the rights of women.

It depends ok n what's been said. Only the most naive think that just because some person claims a statement is racist/sexist/whatever, it is true.

There is a reason employers are not allowed to fire employees for voting a certain way, even publicly, it from having political opinions.

A seriously important thing that unions could do now is make sure this idea of "bringing a business into ill repute" doesn't stop people from being able to take part in public discourse that includes controversial topics. We need legislation around this imo.

I have neither 'abused' or 'attacked' you. Goodness. Such hyperbole in response to a mild difference of opinion. It's like arguing with a TRA.
My post was my rebuttal.
You told me I should tell other left wing people off for giving me a bad name. I was merely asking if you practice what you preach.
I couldn't care less what your religion or politics are. I was referring to your sex realist views, which i share, and the way GC women are maligned because far right extremists have aligned with these views.
I thought it might strike a chord and encourage you to see your error in seeing all left wing people as a homogenous enemy. But no. You wade back in to fling more insults at me, as representative of your imaginary monster: The Left.
